I was looking at a leupold vx3i 4.5-14x40cds with a 1inch tube also considering a vx3i 4.5-14x50 with a 30mm tube can someone tell me if the 30mm is worth the extra money, I’m young and broke so cheaper is better but I really want to shoot 1000yds with my 30/06.....

Call @gr8fuldoug at CameralandNY and talk to him about your options. If you have $300 to spend, they have the Athlon Argos BTR 6-24x50 on sale for $299. I have one and it is a great scope for the money.

A lot of folks shy away from the lower end Leopold's if you are going to do a lot of dialing. The erector is suspect. Something to think about.

Thanks, I’ll give them a look!

Second vote for SS! $300 - $700

I had no issue with my $300 SS from 100 - 1000 for many years even shooting well below 0f, cant say that about some costing 4x as much. Save the nuggets for ammo and training.

did you have to send your scope back to leupold? If not where did you buy the dial?
Nope, just call the custom shop and ask for them, they just replace the cap with the top left piece while the silver tower fits into the turret slot to allow for external adjustment via the top right numbered piece. The bottom part is the zero stop bump.

They come in single turn w/ zero stop or in multi turn w/out zero stop.
If you don’t put the top numbered cap allllll the way down on the single turn zero stop model but just up a smidge you can still feel the zero stop bump but you’re able to slide over the top to get more than one revolution.
They were like 70 bucks when I got them a few years ago, not sure what they are now.

that’s awesome, thanks a lot that’s definitely what I’m going to do with all my other scopes now!!

It’s not the most elegant thing but it’s an easy upgrade that helps me to keep using a scope that would otherwise have gotten regulated to the shelf for lack or turrets.

I wouldn’t buy a scopes with the sole intention of adding the sod turret, I’d rather get one that comes with a turret but if you already have one or you find a steal on one it’s worth a shot.

I would try athlon or swfa S.S. as others have said. Stay away from the 1” tube if your going to 1000 yards with a 30-06 you will run out of travel.

I really had no idea Leupold had this. I would love to add the zero stop to my VX-R Patrol if compatible. I see they offer a standard mil. version...looks like I'm calling Leupold tomorrow.

I got my 12x ss in and the turrets are great(probably due to the fact that they are only 5 mils per rev so they have lots of real estate to use) but the glass isn’t all that great. The ares btr glass while not great is noticeably better to me.

You did not mention how big of a rush you were in to get a scope... If your funds are limited, look around at the LGS, Pawn Shops, etc and pick up a used Leupold. Before mounting it, send it back to the factory. They will check it out, make any needed repairs and it will get back to you better than a new unit... Just a thought.
