I've been using a 9mm PCC for several years and a variety of 9mm pistols for decades.
Was looking for something new and fun and choose an Open Class pistol in 9mm Major. Man o man is it fun to shoot!

I misunderstood. Look at STI or similar double stack pistols. Check out Shooters Connection. Brian Enos forum is the place to go for information. I shot that for years, back when USPSA was IPSC. Though other calibers are more popular that 9mmParabellum in Open because of the gas generated and the compensator. I shot 38 Super, though that's old school now.

I purposely went away from the AR platform when I was hunting a PCC.
....then I bought a B&T Apc9 pro.
It’s different enough that I like the look, but completely familiar on the controls for someone trained on AR platform weapons for years.
The Apc9 is a sweet lil gun. Fun as hell to plink with, more accurate than I need (4-5 inch at 100 rested, w/ ACRO), lil gassy for a lefty.
I did have a lil snag w/ my first batch of mags. I bought new old stock off gunbroker & they liked to spit out second to last and the last round out of a mag at once. But B&T got me fixed up with new replacement mags that run flawlessly.
I have yet to experience cracking that some guys report on the feed lips.
Overall the Apc9 is one of my favorite guns & I 100% would buy one again!

AR9 suppressed (9mm) can double for your PRS rifle (308, 6.5C)... highly efficient. I suppressed my SBR... get 2 stamps... a Dillon 650 and have a ball!
Then my JP reccomendation stands. I went with a conventional charging handle, just because it's a manual of arms I could do in my sleep. PPC Division is really popular in USPSA, and it's rare to see a JP stutter and common for the others. Though that's not relevant for just range fun.
All depends what your going to do with it. i have 2 scorpions and couldn’t be more happy with them.
Definitely go with the JP. Even if it's just for fun at the range you want to stick with something that's going to run anything you can fit in a GLOCK mag.
I have both a CMMG Banshee 9mm and a PSA AKV. They're both a boat load of fun, but if I had to choose just one it would be the CMMG. It's lighter, less felt recoil (neither has much) and has run perfectly for 1000 rounds. I like the folding stock on the AKV and just the fact that it's AKish, but after 500 rounds it's started firing 2 and 3 round bursts. I would consider this a plus if it wasn't random. 
I was thinking about a new trigger for it and from what I've read that should solve the problem, but I'm sure PSA would fix it if asked.

As others have stated, the CZ Scorpion is what you are looking for. Affordable, significant aftermarket support, uber-reliable, cheap magazines, and fun.
My scorpion has been 100% over a thousand rounds of mixed suppressed and unsuppressed. It just flat runs. And it suppresses very well. Think staple gun quiet with a good suppressor.

I'm a bit old school in some of my offerings and will always lean towards colt 9mm... only for the simple reason that it gives me an excuse to grow out a mustache and wear my aviators.
Here's an odd one, mine is a IWI Tavor in 9mm with a Timney trigger. Very fun, reliable, accurate, and DIFFERENT!
Tavor - Yes the Timney is surprisingly good! But it has to work with the factory bullpup linkage, so there's some take up. Doesn't matter too much because the trigger is light and fairly crisp. It's not as good as my Geissele in the AR, which is a 2 stage, but close enough. The factory trigger was horrible, I think the worst trigger I've had, lol, so.....
Csbarr - It's so much easier to shoot now. Shooting at our plate rack at 12Y I'm going a good second faster, which doesn't sound like much, but 6 plates at 3-ish seconds from low ready is all my current ability level will allow.
Also my hit percentage is higher than with the old trigger and I can time the shots better.
That would fit the bill for expensive and fun at the range.
What does one want to accomplish at the range specifically?
Just enjoying blasting ammo at targets, or trying to practice for something, or trying to setup a gun for any other specific purpose?

Well other than learning new mechanics, my biggest issue with the Tavor was the trigger, so this is awesome to hear.
