I much prefer driving across a cattle guard Vs getting out and opening, then driving through, then getting out and closing a gate.

CON, It cuts into valuable prairie dog shooting time.

Pro, Its funny to watch people struggle, then try to figure out how to use that bar hanging on the chain, to open it. After you yell, that bar and chain is the gate opener.

Not open Prarie but serves the purpose

The cones were there for during construction, they are long gone.

Goats and sheep laugh at your cattle guard and they'll kill a horse (the cattle guard, not the goats & sheep).

You have to be careful with horses out here. If you put a few in a pasture, and people see them. They will know you have the money to take care of horses, and might drop you off a couple more.

i heard of a local story here, guy stops w his animal trailer at a local corner feed store, he came out w 2 horses tied to it.
and nobody to be found

Replacing panels on elec gate controllers gets expensive. Mine gets zapped every two or three yrs. Fence chargers get zapped about once a year when I'm running elec fences. Kids make the best gate openers.

and closers.
my back gets to me sometimes, so i may put in a couple solar openers on the gates a use mostly, but really i just tell someone to open the gate and then close it.

This is a true story about my neighbor. He took a few horses to the auction several times. They never sold. Finally on the fourth trip to the auction he managed to give away three horses. When he got to his truck there were two horses in his trailer. No one knew anything.

Goats are pretty smart. You could train them to open and close the gates. Oh wait, goats with the horse murdering. You just can't win with them goats.

Its only kind of a joke. I know a couple people who had horses donated 6 or 7 years ago when hay was up over 200 dollars per ton. I know several boarders, who had the owners of horses ghost them, and leave them with donated horses to feed. I heard stories that one of the bigger ranches had nearly a dozen horses that had been dumped on their land.

My relatives in Northern B.C. whom have Ranches are somewhat known for their 'tight gates'. They have many miles of fences to be maintained, some on deeded land and some on Forestry Grazing.

When assholes decide to drive through the gates without undoing them, and/or locked gates.... then the Wrath is brought out and upon them. Numerous times confrontations have happened, as well as days in Court to deal with these dickheads.

I can also say, that "the community" knows of this, word has gotten around to the locals, and the problem has desisted hugely over the years.

A well tended fence says a LOT for the community. Much to that from many angles.

Cattleguards definitely have their place too.

Are you running any lightning arresters?
No. Gate controller is dc with low voltage ac charger. AC is direct buried to the gate with a small breaker box and outlet the gate charger plugs into.

Fence chargers are ac with real ground rods (2 or 3) and the perm fence they run part ways is grounded every so often. I have lightening arresters that hook up where the wires go to the charger, but they seem to just reduce fence power but lightening will jump and fry the charger anyway. I like a hot fence that'll burn grass that tries to grow into it. Not much fire risk here in the SE.

I say electric gate. Don’t have to get out of the truck, opens and closes with a button like the garage door has and you don’t have to explain how to open it.
I have two mighty Mule gates openers on my property for over 10 years now I couldn’t go back to manually opening the gates after that

It is obvious that it is too time-consuming every time you need to drive through the gate to get out of the car, open the gate, drive through the gate, get out of the car again and close the gate. That's why they came up with automatic gates. We live in 2021 and it seems to me that this technology is available for everyone, lol! Maybe someone will need it, here are the guys who helped me install new automatic gates for me: https://everlastgates.com/austin-texas-automatic-gate-repair-installation/. Why make a huge number of unnecessary movements when you can open and close the gate at the touch of a button. I hope I was able to help someone.
