Most ridiculous price you've seen on 9mm

Some things to keep in mind when you think the retailer is "gouging":
You don't know what he paid for that ammo or to what lengths he went to get it. Some are having to scour and purchase ammo from other retailers, paying retail, and then marking it up. Also, some are having to take additional good or accessories, sometimes less desirable items, to get that ammo on their shelf.
It appears many on here are okay with capitalism until it negatively effects the price of goods they want. Good ole supply demand can be a bitch sometimes. The upside to it in this scenario is for that guy who has to have that 1 or 2 boxes of 9mm, that higher price tag helps to ensure some might be on the shelf for him because the guy who already has 10-20 boxes will pass on it. Also, while some of you are begrudging dealers who might make a little, or maybe even a lot extra margin right now none of you likely felt bad for him while things were plentiful and he was getting by on paper thin margins.
Finally, the beautiful thing about freedom is that dealer is free to charge whatever he wants for a box of ammo and you're free to not buy it or anything else from him ever again.

Feel free to sell me your house for what you paid for it vs. what a housing shortage has driven the price up to....supply and demand. You could have also bought a shit ton of it when prices were low and stock up.

9mm is often in stock at Adventure Outdoors in Smyrna/Marietta outside Atlanta. They sell 150 guns/day and have market power. So trucks roll in a few times each week. Not sure whether they ship. Not as good on powder. Just bought h4350 for $40/lb the other day from another shop because I was out and have not been able to find it online.
That is not the point; sure I can explain it lol not clear if it would make a difference. No you don't have to buy, and yes when supply is low, demand influences pricing. If one can afford something, does that say the price is reasonable? If I knew it was worth that much I'd have put it in a safe deposit box at the bank.
In a few months people will search this thread looking for deals. A month ago I saw an ad for 9mm $680/K and it sold out near instantly.
I can only hope things will return to normal but there are way too many who are bracing for what is to come for it not to happen. We see violence escalating and once one side uses violence then that is what must be used to stop it. And if they are not stopped they will continue to become more violent towards those who than think differently from them.
Those in government have been complicit in a lot of this. On one side is fanning the flames of violence and hate and on the other side refuse to say anything and instead sit on their hands in hopes they are not forced to come out for or against anything. Our "Representatives" haven't represented us for a very, very long time. They do not listen and make decisions for us based on their beliefs and in some cases based on how much it enriches them. I can only hope that those in government, that took the same oath I did, come to their senses before they awake the hibernating bear they have been poking for far too long.

What I’m seeing more than stores raising the prices is individuals hitting up several stores a day buying up any ammo they can. Then selling it at the gun shows or online for 3-4x what they paid for it.
Some of these guys and gals have friends at these stores that set aside ammo for them and not just a few boxes here and there I’m talking about cases of ammo and in one story I heard it was a pallet of cases of 9mm ammo over 10k rounds. Lots of ammo sold never hits the shelves for the public.
Not hard or very expensive to grease the hands of folks working retail.

I had to come back to set the record straight and say I am glad I didn't trash my LGS by name.
I didn't make it in the weekend I saw that they had .45 ACP on line. I ended up emailing them to ask about my order. A customer service associate, one of a few that does online orders sent me the dates for two emails in August I "missed" based on the way Outlook handled the reply I got last Tuesday they went to my junk folder and I deleted them. That caused my order to be cancelled. The guy who was able to fix my order was out the rest of the week. Today I got in touch with him and he was able to reopen my back order and sell it to me at the $300 price. As I said, I'm glad I didn't trash them by name since they fixed "my" problem and stood by a backorder that they could have easily said was cancelled since I didn't confirm it.

This shouldn't have caught anyone off guard unless you are a new gun owner. Anyone that remembers what things were like before and after the Obama election in 08' should have been stocking up the last 4 years while prices were dirt cheap. Between rebates and sales I don't think I've paid more than $8/box for factory 9mm over many thousands of rounds, some cases approaching $6/box. All things are in play, are shops holding ammo back hoping for a Biden win, probably many shops held stock back hoping for an Obama win. Are employees at walmart, dicks, etc. buying ammo at their cost and selling it for 400+% markup at gun shows, of course they are, they get first shot when ammo comes in. Are store employees calling their buddies and putting ammo in back for them, of course they are. We've been setting record gun sales for months now, many new gun owners, just spend $1000 for a gun and $25 for a box of ammo might not seem high to them.
Also frankly, gun owners have themselves to blame for anything over priced. We're the reason there are $600 scope mounts and $800 bipods, $2000 chassis, etc. With shooters willing to dump $ like that on small CNC'd parts it's amazing ammo companies haven't been jacking up prices for years already. 15 years ago most people at the range had never even heard of Leica/Swarovski etc. much less owned one, it was pretty rare to see a rifle setup that cost over $1000. Now you can see tons of them every range trip, and it's pretty common to see a $4000 rig with another $4000 in optics supporting it. The only one to blame for CheaperThanDirt being out of stock of $47 a box 9mm is the people that bought it.

Dang - spoken like a man that has seen it firsthand! Our LGS has worked their rear end off trying to maintain high demand ammo for those that were too short sighted to buy cheap & stack deep while it was easy. They were even buying back 9mm ball ammo from customers that wanted to make a profit so that the non-planners could have some ammo. About a month ago they received a case of Winchester white box 9mm ball ammo that was $18.77 per box WHOLESALE. They sold it for $19.95 per box because the owner was ashamed to price it higher than $20 per box ( as of right now - he's not
). A couple of their distributors were telling them that to get a case of 9mm, they "suggested" to buy $XXXX amount of other product to be eligible to purchase the case.So yeah, sucks all around.
I saw $.675 per round of 115 RN reloads. That's insane but people were still buying so I guess the market will support the price
Steel from any reputable manufacturer such as Winchester are fine, although not for reloading, because difficult to resize. Since steel doesn't expand well, it often times is a bit dirty; cheap steel may expand unevenly and could possibly jam. Steel also is coated, however usually doesn't cause any issues. Many again, will argue about various coatings, although usually only a topic with cheaper ammo. Buy it, and change your attitude with a day of shooting/training.
There's an interesting torchure test using AR's and federal brass -vs- tula steel -vs- wolf steel -vs- brown bear steel out of 4 identical bushmaster rifles that covers a lot of the concerns people have with steel ammo. I'd image steel ammo from Winchester would be better quality than wolf/tula/brown bear. Lacquer -vs- polymer coatings on the steel ammo didn't seem to impact much, and the most dirty gun was the one used with federal brass ammo. That said the brass ammo had zero failures for 10,000 rounds, and all of the steel options had stuck cases, other malfunctions, and the barrels were shot out in 5000 rounds. Granted they shot them till they were so hot they actually discolored the eotech sites and melted one cr123 battery. 2500 rounds got a wipe down, 5000 rounds got a detailed cleaning. Aside the Tula which performed horribly, as it appeared to basically completely clog the gas system, the next worse steel ammo still ran 2000+ rounds without issue or cleaning. Gas system isn't an issue for the handguns, so my only real concern would be barrel wear if it was also steel jacketed ammo.
Honestly what I found more concerning was the steel jacketed ammo, completely wore barrels out in less than 5,000 rounds while copper jacketed Federal ammo was still shooting acceptable accuracy past 10,000 rounds.

I keep seeing links to CheaperThanDirt on here. Are people on here just using their prices as a barometer of how things are, or are they actually trying to purchase their ammo from them? Considering their history of screwing people on pricing, I'm kinda surprised to see them linked here so often.
Things are crazy. I am auction Lake City and getting $60/200. I auctioned off 100 9mm bullets, not loaded ammo, and it sold for $78.
On a Facebook page a guy was running a WTB ad for Large Rifle Magnum primers. He was offering $25/100 primers.
And there are plenty of people buying at these inflated prices. And that is what scares me. Too many people have spent way too much getting ready for a fight for at least some to try to start a fight.
For me, I made it on their mailing list when I purchased some magazines a few years ago- at non-panic pricing- and I’m too lazy to unsubscribe, and a bit curious as well. Their sales flyers are like a slow motion train wreck I can’t look away from. “Ooooh, CtD has 9mm AND 5.56 today? How laughable are the prices?” It’s really just morbid curiosity, though if they have the right item at the right price I may bite...

The level of communist in our country is shocking. After all we have been fighting and dying for, we have been beat from the inside. I don't see them confiscating our firearms immediately, but they will find a way to hold either manufacturers or sellers accountable for deaths by firearms. Once the retail gun stores close, we will be next. They will find a way; neighbors, friends, and family turning each other in. No way Trump lost, I am worried

I was in my local barber shop scheduling a cut and one of the lady barbers came over (she knows I love guns) and excitedly told me she had just bought her first handgun a S+W M&P. I told her that that was awesome and congrats and asked if she had any ammo. She said they let her buy 2 boxes for $50.00. I grimaced and she asked if that was high. I told her that right now not really and I asked her if she got the same going rate for a cut ($25.00) as the other barbers and she said yes. "I'll tell you what... If you are game how about you cut my hair next time and I'll trade you. Does 5 boxes of 9mm sound fair?" She was stunned and said yes! I have a (very small) amount to spare but I really want her to enjoying shooting (Good for all of us!) and be safe. I'll probably sneak in a box of Federal HST 9mm +P too. It's the least I can do...
For most of us I'm more worried about availability than prices. While I don't like it, competition shooters will find a way to pay almost any ammo price. I mean we're paying $4000 for scopes, $2000 for chassis, $500 for scope mounts, $800 for bipods, $1500 tripods, $4000 spotting scopes, $800 wind meters, $150 for scope caps, $400 for muzzle brakes, $400 for soft rifle cases, $200 for cloth shooting bags, $200 for a strip of arca rail, $300 tripod clamps, the list goes on and on and we're driving it to the range in $80k trucks. Honestly it's amazing ammo companies have not been increasing prices for years already just based on the ridiculous prices we pay for other shooting items.
The groups I really feel bad for are the youth shooting clubs, many had to stop or shutdown teaching/shooting during Obama, not so much because of price but because it doesn't matter how much ammo is when it's out of stock everywhere. The same is true for rifle ranges/clubs they will probably see membership by casual shooters drop significantly unless they can supply ammo. Even if they don't mind paying the prices, most are not going to spend hours surfing gunbroker etc. to find some ammo, they have better things to do, they'll just find another hobby for awhile. That only hurts the overall shooting base which is exactly what the DNC wants.
Also if you think it's going to get better soon.....Vista (CCI/Federal/Blazer) announced earlier this month they currently have a $1 Billion backlog of ammo orders that will take at least a year to catch up on, add to that all the panic buying that's going to happen with Biden and you can forget about seeing normal ammo availability or prices in 2021
