In Venezuela 90% of gov revenue is from oil and those revenues pay millions of jobs ,pensions,social security, subsidies on everything from fuel to medicine, and a bunch of other free socialist stuff.(try cutting 90% of US federal and state budgets) Like many oil-exporting countries, they were spending way more than they should, budgeting for high oil prices so even before sanctions dop in oil prices hit hard.

Elites will always have anything they want in abundance. There's no easy answer to the Venezuela situation. At what point do the people decide that their problems are being caused by the USA. Their situation is the same as Iran but they are about 30 years behind them. Socialism is, by definition, the interim state of communism where the means of production are “collectively” owned, but there is still a government and there are still classes. It is the leap towards communism, and is not a final state of being. If you are a socialist you are a sad, little, communist bitch, period.
