I picked up some barnesx 160gr bullets in .338 cal. I am looking to find out how much H1000 powder to use with this bullet? Hodgdon only post load info with H1000 down to the barnes 185gr bullet but not the 160gr bullet. Just wondering how much powder of H1000 I should use for these, any of you guys out there ever load this for the 338 lapua? Thanks in advance

First, let me say that I don't use any bullets less than 250gr in my 338LM. Having said that, I tried plugging 160gr Barnes into my QuickLoad, and with 102.1 grains of H1000, you have 110% filled case capacity, for about 3350 FPS and a max pressure of 52,358psi. You will only burn about 95% of that powder. I would definitely try a faster burning powder for that light of a bullet. This is just my opinion, however, and like I said, I don't use anything that light for bullets in my 338LM.

You might try Varget or BL-C2, see if they can give you any data for them.....

Curious what Barnes says...

Thanks for the help, i do have some Varget also, but looking at the hodgdon burn rate chart it looks like H1000 is too slow and Varget may be too fast. I sent an email to Hodgdon so I'll see if they send an answer.

Ramshot Magnum powder works fantastic in my 338 Lapua , 210's , 185's and I just tried the 160's!!! This works amazingly fast and extremely accurate!!! This is a 160 Barnes with 116.2 of Ramshot Magnum powder!! 104 yards !

So missing high by almost 3 inches is good? Cold bore shot? What is your velocity? How about a 10 round group...

Zeroing it , I set it 2-3/4" high because I am going Elk Hunting!!!

Hi,

You set it to purposely be 2 3/4" inches high at 100 yards because you are going elk hunting???

Do you know the POI difference for the distances you may actually shoot an elk at from setting it dead on at 100 yards?

Why such an "odd" amount difference? Why not even 2" or even 3"?? But an exact 2 3/4"???

Sincerely,
Theis
