The title of this thread is neither typo, nor confession.

I own three rifles I have named.

    Mjolinar - M1 Garand

    Gungnir - 1.3 SN 1903

    1.4 SN 1903

When I know the end is near, though impractical, I would hope to fight my way to one of these and be surrounded by 30-06 brass.

547 yards of sighting requiring superior eyesight. The mil never registered the rifle from 30-03 to 30-06 so you get the weird ass sight zero.

Instruction must have been “If they are close aim at their knees. If far, aim at their head!”

USMC invented the #10 sight set to make zero 200 yards.

    Target or precision sight.

An onboard targeting computer. It accounts for elevation and even spindrift as the slide offsets left at distance.

    We are lazy and dumb.

They made their kestrels out of tool steel and sweat.

    1. 25.5 - 8 ring low
    2. 31.5 - 9 ring 2000
    3. 32.5 - 8 ring 2330 WTF?
    4. 32 - 9 ring 2100

For shot 5 I did something dangerous. I dialed windage. You need to be able to dial to the millionth of an inch to make this work.

    I am that person

    5. 32 with CH R - X line

Came across this rifle in a weird way.

It was in a “For sale” post on Culver’s and getting wet over the description I replied “Man if you were in MA I would be all over this.”

In about 30 seconds he replied he was in Tewksbury MA not 5 miles away.

Straight grain solid ass pre WWII walnut….

Being USMC queer it kind of bummed me out that the USMC looked down on the C Stock and saw them as trash.

I get wet over pre war C stocks.

@cplnorton has fully sourced that the USMC preferred straight to C.

At least one Marine on Guadalcanal though wasn’t straight…..

    I identified shots 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 10 and 12 as the only ones outside the 10 ring.

Two inch rule for reference because using the longer CM side would be dumb.

I think my zero is the top right cluster.

As the barrel heated it looked to move up/right.

I should probably take out my CH of right windage I added.

Coming down a half MOA May benefit but next time I shoot reflection off the FSP will differ and things will be just as off.

Could have used my “Super Smoker” to dull the FSP.

I’m going now to comment in posts about AI how I don’t like modern guns.

Creedmoor Sports was selling them for awhile.

Theirs was made by SB Sales in Florida after Ray Vin retired and stopped making his copy of the PJ Ohare sight micrometer from the Golden Age.

There may still be reproduced made I haven’t really researched Gun toys lately.

You can still find old originals on Ebay or in the “want to sells” at CMP forum or Culver’s shooting page.

They can be had. Google PJ Ohare sight micrometer. Most are mil marked. Uncle Sam must have bought 100s of thousands of them.

    Last I looked originals were $150 - $250.

Guessing like everything they are now more money.

    @Stevo86

This company is good to go.

I bought one of their copies of the Ray Vin Super Smoker.

I think it arrived from Australia in about a week. I was amazed.

    Buy the Super Smoker also.

Yeah they got a shipment of C stocks for regular service rifles just in time for the Canal. They had received some in small shipments for team rifles, but not for the service rifles to that point. I do have a couple other pics of the C stock on the Canal, but the only reason they took them is they did not have a choice. SA would not make them anymore straight stocks and the Marines were searching for commercial suppliers to make Straight stocks for them and they ran out of time.

The real argument that I see about them is the Marines put a lot of stock into hand to hand combat, and they state the C stock did not give you the same trusting power for a buttstroke or lunge with a bayonet.

Though when you think about it, the Marines had already adopted the M1 in 1941, contrary to lore they didn't choose the M1 till after the Canal. The M1 had basically the same style of pistol grip stock and they never asked about a straight stock for it.

Honestly it was probably just the same thing you always see, people resist change. They had been using straight stocks for over 30 years at that point and they just didn't want to change.

Looking at the photo again and zooming appears both 03’s visible have C stocks.
