    Hello mates,
    Has anyone got experience with the Calypso ultrasonic wind meters?

    Keen to hear actual reports on:
    - 'Bluetooth 30 meters' is this true, connecting to an iphone.
    - Actual measurement resolution for direction & speed measurements?
    - Any app connectivity?

    There is reference to a new 'MINI AB' on their site however the link is broken... I like the idea of being able to keep this on a small tripod off to the side somewhere 5-10 meters away, and keep an actual eye on this data.... Compared to the Kestrel and actual observations.

    They are quite expensive so don't want to throw money at random gear without some good reports.

    Thanks,
    Jim

    I've used a Mini for just short of 2 years now.
    I don't have an iPhone so can't really comment on that. I've not tried to see what the maximum distance is on Android as it didn't fit how I use it.
    In general the BlueTooth connection has been very reliable especially if you compare it to something like a LabRadar.

    Strelok Pro worked great with it while it was still available. This new AB product image must be the new thing coming the AB rep here hinted at.
    Hopefully my current meter will work in AB mobile with an AB update.

    As to the accuracy and resolution it is on par with my 5700. The bad in this comparison is there can be a some lag with a direction or speed change at very low velocity (like less than 2 MPH or when are frequent lulls). The MASSIVE plus Vs a Kestrel is no need for a vane that most be kept dead-nuts level to work.
    Given you are using a phone to view the data there is no more not seeing the Kestrel display because the wind direction pointed the vane away from you.

    The Calypso provided "AnemoTracker" app is a mixed bag. While it is good that they constantly update it, the fact they don't have a separate beta channel means they repeatedly break it. Disable auto-updates for this once you have a working version. The current build has been essentially non-functional for nearing 2 months now (more like 6 if wish to go back to the best version). Fortunately I was able to side-load the last fully working version (56) and restore function to my Mini.

    The "WeatherDot" product is to be avoided for now. It adds temperature/pressure/humidity measuring and logging and is what they are breaking the app over to add functions for it. It is not a finished product IMO and Calypso did themselves no favors by leaving a needed adapter out of the box then lie about it not ever being included. Then lie again about making it right after pointing out is in the included parts list, the manual and their own website.

    That's the good and bad of Calypso products in my experience.

    I’ve seen a few of these at PRS matches. Not very common though. And the dudes that have them I still see them using their kestrel for gathering wind 😂
    I'll still use my Kestrel for Temp and DA at a match. I honestly can't recall the last time I used my Kestrel for wind. The Mini is on my tripod with binos and LRF using a cheap spare phone as an always on display.

    I have run this for a year for Rimfire PRS and if you use a Garmin watch, it's like a live wind meter in real time, albeit, it's only where the meter is being measured not down range. It helped me win a 500yd center fire match yesterday.

    The skill of being able to read wind will be much more valuable than one wind reader taking measurements at a fixed location behind the shooting position.

    I think these calypsos could be an interesting tool in a daisy chain setup along the path to the target, in order to help understand how wind behaves and aid you in learning to read wind.

    But for matches, I don't really see how a calypsos provides much utility beyond what a kestrel does.

    Thanks mates, I really appreciate the time and input. Agree that these are still not THE overall answer, but another tool in the box to help monitor and build a picture.

    The Applied Ballistics lads sent a message this morning, they are planning to release some further info. According to spec sheets, the AB version links to a whole host of related optics, watches, phones, etc.

    I ordered one of the AB versions this morning, to suss out and get some time on.

    Totally agree. Learn to feel the wind on your face and arms and judge wind at distance. I have a Kestrel but only use it for density altitude calcs.

    There's lots of tricks for wind.

    Look at the topography and understand how wind, a liquid, would flow through the terrain. Understand your max ordinance, what the wind may be doing at that elevation, and what geographical features and vegetation may or may not affect that. Look at what the vegetation is doing throughout the line of fire to the target - are canopies moving? How much wind does it take for that type of tree canopy to move like that? Etc.

    Mine came in today.

    It connects to the kestrel, but it doesn't do anything from when I got it out of the box. (I have it charging right now to see if anything changes once it's topped off.) It would connect, but the wind information would not update.

    On the app, real time information is noticeably (but not insanely) faster than the non-AB version. When I first connected to my phone, there were some options for a LRF, the update status, and something else, but I don't see it anymore.

    I'll leave it to charge and play around with this version for a little. I returned the non-AB version because instructions aren't up to date the the current app version, and the device is just set it and go.

    Keep us updated….. I’m curious to see real time data in the Kestrel. My watch is almost real time.

    Got ours last week and so far it's not shown any wind data from the unit. The battery now does display a '?', so things are progressing however right now, it still doesn't work.

    I have been on the phone to Calypso again tonight, they are actively updating their IOS app to deal with issues with the AB version.
    The iphone app, check the version you have (under the main logo at the top when you open the app), the most recent one from earlier today is VR: 09-07-2024. Delete your current app and re-download it fresh. Their engineers are working on a hot fix right now and have said they'll email me in a 'few hours' so hopefully we're not far off...

    The Garmin 701 I have recognises it, but also does not display any wind data from the unit.

    Since they use AB maybe they are relying on their protocol? Has anyone tried these with their Kestrel or LRF?

    With the new app, I was able to get the readings. I was able to connect to Kestrel and Garmin through AB, but I couldn't get the readings either. I wonder if AB enables all devices to work right out of the box, or if the developers on the other side (Garmin/Kestrel) need to update their firmware on their device as well?

    There is a firmware update from July 4th but no mention of AB.

    The iOS one does.

    So far didnt see any new firmware from the app. It shows device is up to date.

    I am assuming that as well. The worst nightmare would be to have to use a 5700x to make this work. The screenshot below is apparently the Applied Ballistics Mini screen but it sporadically shows up. I've only gotten to see it twice. (When I first connected and an hour ago when I was messing with it.) The current settings I would assume has both wind updates and scanning on, but it doesn't do anything in the kestrel in either the ballistic or the weather part.

    It was supposed to be fully tested……
    Considering how they have the Anemotracker updated to include a pretty good manual on July 2 that details what the metrics mean and even their calculations for the metrics, I think they took input in regards to people not understanding the values. That was the major issue I had.

    In terms of the app, it definitely needs a good developer or it's going to encounter the same issues as Labradar. Small things like values being cut off and a better visual indicator of being connected becomes an annoyance.

    Or randomly removing values such as inHg for pressure.

    It looks like you can get to the AB menu by going to the side menu and reselecting "Ballistics"

    Still trying to figure out why this is not updating a kestrel. I can't connect to a kilo 8K and I don't intend on testing with other phone apps, since we already know it works.

    I have emailed applied ballistics, Calypso (phone with no response), and Kestrel to see if this requires a firmware update to see live data. I am curious who they contacted to test this product at this point... So I can harass them for guides (with money of couse)

    edit:
    Changing options in the AB menu and connecting to the Kestrel resets the options.

    Options:
    Wind Updates = Turns on (highlighted blue) real time wind reading
    Scanning = No idea
    Set LRF = No idea

    Yeah, I'm going to need some guidance on this. As of right now, if I can only use the real time data from my phone, I'd rather get the cheaper, AB-less model. Looks like we're beta testing the release.

    Update: Having updated the iOS app again late last night, my wind meter is now sending wind info to the iPhone.

    Was sent a message saying that Garmin items that connect are the Tactix7, GPSMap67 and Montana 7xx. I don’t have any of those.

    Items I’ve tried to link:
    * Kestrel5700X didn’t find it.
    * SIG Kilo10K binos didn’t find it.
    * Garmin701 did find it, but couldn’t get any info from it? The 701 would be good, being wrist mounted.

    My Tactix 7 is already connected to my Solar Calypso.......I'd like to see this updating real time to my kestrel to my HUD.

    I think all of us are hoping for that. I haven’t gotten a response from anyone, but if this product can do that, it would be a huge game changer.

    But I assume what another poster said is true. Kestrel will have to do a firmware update to allow this. I’m assuming that there is nothing in a kestrel that currently allows the kestrel to constantly read wind changes alongside calculations. Really hoping we wouldn’t need a 5700x for this, but I did buy one today just in case.

    I’m more hoping the Vectronix X will come ready for these out of the box.

    got a response back;

    - Real time updates between the Calypso and Kestrel is under development and has a planned release in Q3.

    - It looks like we will not need the 5700x for real time updates.

    It looks like devs will need to allow access on their respective applications/ products for the Calypso to push info to it. Will be looking forward to see who will support this, but until then, the AB Mini is pretty similar to the portable model until more devices come onboard,

    The iOS app will not connect to the Calypso.... just sits there saying "connecting," which makes is a bit difficult to update the firmware.
    Make sure the Mini is fully charged and sitting on the Qi charging pad. Also make sure you are using the firmware app not the regular AnemoTracker one.

    You can't use the Calypso simultaneously with 2 separate display devices, right?

    For example, AB mobile app & Garmin app for live updates
    Just tried this with two different phones, one using Anemotracker the other 4DoF. Once a device is paired to the Mini it will not show on the other device to even select, so no.

    Y'all buying the mini? With or without this BT2000 option? Is that Bluetooth or something else? Their product page isn't very helpful
    That option is for an NMEA gateway, is more of a ship mounted data interface:

    The thread is primarily about the new AB model which is currently sold out, I have the original model Mini.

    I’ve been using one for about a year. It’s decent but nothing more than a 5700.

    I have the regular calypso mini (i.e. not AB) and have been trying to connect it to a kestrel 5700. Does not find it. Have updated firmware on both devices as of today

    Anyone successfully connect the mini to a kestrel 5700?

    I have the non AB labeled calypso, and have the anno meter app on my phone as well as garmin watch. I bought a cheap one that was said to interface. Bluetooth range on my phone is pretty good but the watch needs be pretty close, like no further than 15-20'. I cannot get anything to sink with my kestrel elite. AB app keeps saying there is a new update coming soon, backup your data. I'm sure this will be the software that integrates with calypso.

    I'm also trying to connect the device to my phone. I've already tried both android and apple stumps. But it's all in vain. The AnemoTracker program tries to connect, but then disconnects without showing the battery level. The configurator hangs in the “connection” mode. The Strelok program seems to connect and then immediately disconnect, without indicating the speed. The program from Hornady shows wild speed and arbitrary direction, while it is not dynamic, but static.
    I also have a version with a solar panel, it works well with Strelok.
    By the way, I bought it on tradeinn.com, the device came without a charger. I had to buy it separately. I already think the problem is in the charger.
    Maybe someone has some information?

    Have been using one of the Calypso ultrasonic Solar Wind meters for about 2 years now. In short, I love them. Here are a few tips:

    1) Particulars of the wind meter I'm using:
    "hardware_revision": "3.00",
    "firmware_revision": "2.24",
    "software_revision": "1.41E"

    2) Be patient... If you're not tech savvy, they can be a bit of morale buster.

    3) I use a Garmin Delta Tactics Solar watch with the Calypso app for in stage wind calls. Can say, this has saved me more than a few times, just don't get stuck watching your watch and run out of time.

    4) If there are multiple Calypso wind meters at matches, you'll have challenges connecting. You need to know the serial number (MAC address "serial_number": "CD:70:52:83:BE:35") of your wind meter (if you're using firmware 2.24 or newer) and make sure you're connecting to the correct wind meter or you'll steel you're buddy's and get his wind calls. If you run into this, the only solve is to walk away from everyone with your wind meter (~50') and connect to your sensor. Walk back to your squad with the wind meter connected.

    5) Because of the limitations of connecting to my device, I've built a bluetooth repeater/range extender that allows me to be "sticky" to my wind meter and also allowing 2 devices to connect to it. (ie, a buddy can connect to it, or I can now leave an iPad on my tripod so other can look at what the wind is doing over time.). I can now walk about 100' from my wind meter and it stays connected with no problem. Will post a few pics on SN once I clean the setup up a bit.

    6) Up-the sample rate. Out of the box, your wind meter will us a 4Hz sample rate. This is how quickly your device samples the air per second. (4Hz=4 time per second) If you're running a min-meter, when it goes into low power mode, it'll drop down to 1Hz. It's a big difference when you compare 4Hz to 1Hz in the iPhone and android apps. There is a 3rd option for sampling faster, 8Hz. You'll need a laptop and will need to be pretty tach savvy to hard code the sample rate to 8Hz. After I changed mine to 8Hz, the wind readings on my Garmin are near real time. At 4Hz, there is a "lag" of about 1-2 seconds between the wind changing as you feel it to when your devices report it.

    7) I've found that the solar model is better than the mini. There are 3 kinds Calypso sells:
    A) (This one will need external equipment, I don't recommend you buy it for PRS or other matches/shoot). https://calypsoinstruments.com/shop/product/ultra-low-power-ultrasonic-wind-meter-ulp-standard-6
    B) This is the one I have: https://calypsoinstruments.com/shop/product/ultrasonic-portable-solar-wind-meter-2#attr=62
    C) The mini... I'm not a fan: https://calypsoinstruments.com/shop/product/ultrasonic-portable-mini-wind-meter-221#attr=195,191

    8) If you're a developer, you'll need to "sign your life away" with Calypso Instruments in order to get their developer manual. Make sure to review their agreement if you ask for it. I was able to get them to red line my agreement so it was more equitable. I'm writing a new Garmin app for these things that'll have several features I've seen other shooters asking for:

    A) Ability to name, remember, and secure a wind meter to a given device (similar what Kestrels do)
    B) Auto reconnect to wind meter if a connection is lost (because when you gotta pee, you gotta pee)
    C) Garmin alerts (sounds and vibration) if wind changes direction over a given value
    D) In stage timer. Ability to use the Garmin as a timer while also being used as a wind meter
    E) Average wind over a given timeframe
    F) Wind per target in single screen (List of targets and the wind based on their direction
    G) Customize the colors and layout of the Garmin app via smart phone
    H) Longer term item - Integration with AE Ballistic app on a Garmin device to provide DOPE
    I) Longer term item - Ability to record heart rate and respiration while in stage (for training and awareness of how we handle in stage stress)

    Will make the app cheap when it's ready. Most likely, next season (2025)

    Hope this helps.
