New ELEY Ultra Extreme Long Range Round incoming

Was able to run some this afternoon. Have been running Lapua Super Long Range. Ran through a case of that. Could not find anyone that had it in stock. So purchased a case of Lapua Long Range. It did not perform as well as I had hoped.

Cleaned the chamber and throat area. Sent 10 rds of LLR

Then sent 10rds of LSLR

This is the group at 50 with LSLR. It probably needed a few more mags to get it settled in.

Moved on to Eley Ultra Extreme Long Range.

I was shooting faster than it could reset. This is the first 40 rds measured 90°f outside. Ammo and rifle sat for 4 hours before shooting. The group below is the last 10 of those 40 rds. Again at 50 yards.
20240627_190111.jpg

Moved to the 200 yard line and sent a few more. Wind was pretty sporty, was keeping vertical in about .2 mils. Used the same BC as my Lapua ammo. Was tracking pretty close, need more rounds down the barrel to confirm what I'm actually measuring. Velocity measured after 130 rds down the barrel.

I went ahead and weigha box to see what it looked like.

Results:

3 - 51.98
2 - 51.88
6 - 51.78
6 - 51.70
3 - 51.66
10 - 51.60
2 - 51.56
7 - 51.62
1 - 51.48
6 - 51.40
2 - 51.30
1 - 51.22
1 - 51.14

That is what 1 box measured out. I'm surprised the ES/SD are as tight as they are.

Lapua SLR has a spread of .2 grs

Lapua LR has a spread of .34 grs

Eley spread .84grs

Took the 10 of 51.60 and ran then just to see what it looked like.

The group has 9 in the white, I was shooting this with the headlights of my truck shining the target.

I'm on the fence as to what it's going to do. It appears to have promise. Time will tell, want 500rds on the barrel to season it before I can truly trust the data I'm seeing.

With any .22LR match-type ammo, trust large samples of target results. Never trust small samples of target results.

Chrony data doesn't determine what the ammo does on target.

Thanks for the preliminary info. My half brick comes in today and I’ll be shooting it tomorrow morning through a brand new zero rounds 13t MullerWorks. I won’t have time to shoot it at 200 but I’ll do the standard 50/100 yard test.

Agree, that's why I want 500-1000rds down the pipe.

At 50 yards I agree with your statement. In my experience, when you start pushing beyond 100 your SDs show in your vertical.

I visually inspected the Ultra bullet just now and compared it to the Semi-Auto Benchrest that I shoot a lot of. The ultra’s nose is narrower.
It’s super close to Club. Not identical though. Ultra is on the left

Couldn’t wait so I ran to the range before I lost sunlight. They sucked out of my two rifles. I won’t test them again until they have lot options. As of right now you can’t pick anything.
1098 was from the 25” 13t MullerWorks (brand new) and 1127 was from the 23.5” 16t Krieger. Temp was around 85 degs.

I absolutely could not get them to group with either rifle. The following are 5x5 group sizes with the Ultra at 50y with very light wind using the MullerWorks.
0.470”, 0.399”, 0.773”, 0.383”, 0.469”

With that said, I brought a lot of Semi-Auto Benchrest that has shot really well with my other rifles and shot a 5x5 with the following groups with the MullerWorks:
0.284”, 0.348”, 0.194”, 0.244”, 0.316”
The 25 shot group chrono data was from that lot of ammo.

note to self : just because the garmin is in the range bag does not mean it's charged !
That being said went from checking zero straight to 250 1st shot high , adjust and bang 10 straight .
Did the same from 300 to 500 in 50 yard increments on both guns,Cz MTR and S&S Custom w/krieger .
Worked nicely, did have 4 flyers though !

Here’s my stats out of a Cz 457 with 21 inch Lilja. It was 90 degrees.

@50 10 shot eley group vs. 5 shot lot tested SKLR I shoot in NRL/PRS
IMG_3237.jpeg

I will say it didn’t do very well at 50, but it did group much better at 100 & 200.

Sent another 100 today. Not seeing any improvements. More flyers than their should be IMHO. Was getting ES in the 70s today. The interesting part today was getting flyers left and right based on the velocity. I'm not happy with the results thus far.

Eley Ultra Extreme Long Range evaluated in my Vudoo with 22” 1 in 12 twist Modacam chambered barrel.
This barrel is a bit picky, and I’ll normally need to lot test 5 or 6 lots of Tenex or Match to find one or two it likes. Also ran it through a Bergara B14R steel 18” barrel that isn’t terribly ammo sensitive but isn’t super hot either.

I bought the Ultra mostly to see how it compares. When I saw that there was only one lot I knew that I was rolling the dice given how picky my barrel is, but thought that I might see some improvement with the Bergara.

BLUF: Neither gun shot it as well as mediocre Tenex lots.

Testing:

Day was warm, 90-94 degrees, less than 1 mph wind at start, but became variable 2-4 mph, 50% humidity, 29.94 in/hg.

Shot 10 round groups at 50, 100, 220, and 300 yards. Shot all Tenex groups first and then changed to the Ultra. Did shoot a second 10-round confirmation with the Tenex at 50 after the 300 group just to make sure nothing changed. Rifles were both a little overdue for cleaning as there was a match a couple of weeks ago and then a range session and I forgot that I hadn’t cleaned them after the match. Did have a few fliers with the Tenex I didn’t expect, but that happens sometimes. Maybe it was due to the barrrel being more fouled than I generally allow, maybe the caffeine kicked in, or maybe it was influenced by the guy next to me with an unsuppressed 5.56 SBR hammering out 90 round strings on a 9” plate at 100 while I was shooting the last 50yd group…we’ll never know.

Just to make sure it wasn’t due to lack of seasoning I did an additional 10 rounds at 50 and 100 with the Ultra.

IMG_7595.jpeg

IMG_7597.jpeg

IMG_7591.jpeg

IMG_7599.jpeg

IMG_7592.jpeg

Wind was variable through the string and I didn’t notice it drop off a couple times.
IMG_7593.jpeg

I might revisit when multiple lots are available to test, but as of right now I don’t plan on shooting any more of this lot.
The Bergara didn't do as well as the Vudoo.

My ammo delivers tomorrow and will be testing it in a 25" Krieger 11 twist, will share the results
Not shooting worth a damn in my Vudoo, scrubbed the barrel back to bare metal. Shot 50 rounds to season the barrel and then ran some over the chrono which is shown below and every group was +/- 3/4" at 50 yards so not wasting anymore time or money on this stuff!

Doesn't sound like this stuff is worth it, worse accuracy and higher ES than Tenex/Match means it's not exactly fit for purpose.

Was looking to see if our importer could bring a few cases in but think I'll just stick with the "standard" match ammo options.

Unfortunately the only reviews I can see online are from the US, I imagine the US is also the largest market for this type of ammo.
I wonder if it was indeed just a bad batch, or if this ammo in general is performing poorly?

I just got a brick of this "Ultra Long Range". I am not going to be able to test it till Sept as my range is always closed the month of August for repairs and refurbishment. But I thought I wonder what the weight spread is on this ammo. So I weighed 10 of Ultra and 10 of Tenex. WELL the Ultra had a spread of .6 gn while Tenex had a spread of .3 gn. My scale goes to .02 gn for accuracy. Needless to say i am VERY disappointed. Just because it has a mean velocity of 1100 which is above Tenex and Black Box doesn't make it good for long range if they aren't controlling the tolerance of the components like they do in Tenex.

This may have been a waste of $200

Edit

I now see that my lot is the one being recalled. Phoey

:(

My Vudoo shoots regular SK Match better than TenX, Lapua, or the half dozen other expensive cartridges I've tried. It doesn't seem to even matter what lot it is (or I've just gotten lucky).

My groups at 50 are extremely tight with all in the ten ring and most on the X. Not feeling like I have to test ammo anymore is 90% of the reason I love the rifle. Is it bench rest comp ready? Probably not. Is it plenty precise for NRL comps? Yes! My rifle doesn't miss, I do.

I would buy whatever shot straight in my rifle, period. More choices seems like a good thing, but only to have more choices to test if your rifle doesn't shoot straight. If it does why would you switch or even care? Progress?

I'll add that I'm probably never switching from subs either. Coming from PRS I have no problem with wind calls, and don't mind those 8 mil holds @ 300 yds. I don't see the guys shooting super sonic doing any better (in fact worse). The only real advantage I can see is if you don't have flashers at distance you're less likely to get screwed out of an impact.

I commend any new .22 ammo to try if you can't get your gun to shoot straight. If it does shoot straight...

That means they are paying attention to forums like this and other social media platforms. I mean we did report on it before the YouTubers did.
They told me, I was the first person to complain about it. That they had been watching the forums and did not see anything negative. My quote to them "you are not looking at snipershide".

Still have 4700rds of it. Have been hunting the last couple weeks. Was happy to see the recall, submitted my information. They said they would get with me within 3 business days. Will report what they tell me.

I went over to Eley due to the ability to easily lot test without needing to do anything more than place an order for the available lots and head to the range. I went through the normal progression of SK and Lapua offerings, but kept seeing lot to lot variation, and both SK and Lapua seemed to struggle past 200 yards. Eley Tenex consistently out-performed Lapua and SK at 220 and 300 yards for me in my factory barrel V22. I rebarreled with a 1 in 12 twist (needed a longer/heavier barrel anyway) and to get the most consistent performance I devoted that barrel to Tenex and Eley Match only. With a lot that the barrel likes (it's a little picky) it will consistently do 1.5 MOA or better at 200-300. Some of this may be from the faster twist, but even in a 1 in 16 twist the Eley Match and Tenex showed better performance further down-range. I didn't really expect the Ultra Long Range to out-perform my personally lot-tested Tenex, I just wanted to see if Eley cracked the code on getting a decent option that wouldn't require lot testing.

I didn't chrono the Ultra LR, but the drops I saw lined up with my usual 1080-1120 ft/s that I get from Tenex and Match through that barrel, and I didn't hear any of them go supersonic. I was interested to see if Eley was pushing the velocity into the supersonic range, thus earning the "EXTREME Long Range" badge, and still give good dispersion across all ranges, because as you said, I have yet to see a supersonic .22LR that will hang with the match stuff we're all shooting.

Damn you went all in on it. I only bought 5 boxes because there was always a chance they wouldn’t shoot well especially being brand new to the market.
I figured if it shot well, I would miss my chance. Lapua SLR my rifle loves. Not expecting to see it until Q3. Was hoping Eley would be better. Roll the dice, good thing I did not buy 2 cases.

They also clearly have not been monitoring Rimfire Central it does not have a good rep there either from what I've seen of initial reports.

In their defense, our conversation took place July 9th. Being out of the country for the last two weeks I have not kept up with things. I'm sure a lot more people have been able to test in the past few weeks.
