After a looong, extremely stressfull ordeal, we finally escaped the communist peoples' republic of Illinois for the freer state of Tennessee.

After three 26' U-haul and two 20' trailer loads, plus two overflowing 20 yard dumpsters, and much help from some incredible new neighbors, I'm no longer a criminal for exercising a constitutional right.

Anyway, here's the new backyard:

I recall seeing a thread about movers a while back. My advice, sell or pitch EVERYTHING (exceptions apply, of course) and buy new stuff. We moved ourselves and saved money. We had a 3500 sqft house and a 1200 sqft shop, chickens and rabbits. Total cost to move was ~ $5-8k, Didn't keep track, and more physical labor than I could possibly have imagined. Totally worth it in the end.

we in FL hear that shit all the time " we did it this way in (whatever yankee shit hole they came from). i always make a point of informing them that it still there and they should go back.

Not too worried.

1. People from Shitcago (over a certain age) are all gangsters and can handle themselves.

2. Any reference to the way things were done in IL would be highly critical. ...except maybe when it comes to water pipes. I grew up sweating copper. I know it's better overall, but PEX can't match the authentic of well soldered copper pipes.

Actually, according to gunnery sgt Robert Lee Swagger, "Welcome to Tennessee, the patron state of shootin' stuff."

Anyway, someone else I know from Tennessee says the place is just overrun with whitetail. Almost to the point where you can't shoot in any direction without hittting one.

So, I will bring my smoked brisket to snack on ....

Now, it will take a while, I am in north Texas.

Where in IL did you move from? I grew up very north in Hellinois, nw of Rockford. I escaped early and haven’t looked back. Even when my wife suggests moving closer to family I can only suggest WI or IA…

Tennessee loves fleeing Yankees, congrats. Enjoy all the Californians and Mexicans and cool Civil War history stuff.

My grandparents used to live in the hills down in the corner of NC, SC and Tennessee. He sold off his place two acres at a time to fund retirement. It was a really nice area back in the day. The family had been up there since the 1700s.

I fully endorse moving away from communist states, removing your misused stolen tax dollars from the left's treasury, strengthening conservative strongholds, and living a freer life for yourself and your family.

Copper pipes wise, listen to the advice above about the water in the area... Having lived in eight states (including Tennessee) and a couple dozen localities in those states, my biggest suggestion is learn from the longtime locals in your area what is best for your land and home. Do not try to just bring in something without questioning the experience in your area if it's right. This applies to what to plant, materials to use, and how to care for your property. They know through decades of trial and error what works and what fails, and I have yet to meet anyone in a new area that isn't helpful in giving advice to a new neighbor.

Unless it's a Californian in Wyoming. Then we just tell you to go back. They learn quick to keep that shit under their hat.

We leave Tuesday for Florida. Leaving most stuff behind as we're keeping the house for at least another year and renting it fully furnished. When we do end up selling, we're dumping most stuff (already dumped a bunch) and the rest is going into the Pods. Seems like the best way to move your stuff. They drop off a pod(s) and you load it at your leisure. They pick it up and deliver it to your destination. I assume it takes longer to get, but seems worth it to me. Did you research the Pods at all? Maybe I'm being a bit naive about how easy/reliable the Pods are.

I must be missing something. TWRA has the state divided into units 1-6. Where is unit L? Based on your limits you have to be somewhere in Units 1, 2 or 3. Just curious, I'm in Unit 6.

I just consulted the 2425 handbook yes it looks like they’ve changed. I am in Wayne county, which is now unit two for many years previous. It has been unit L.

So, Tn has a different way of looking at units than does Tx. In Tn, a unit can hold a number counties. In Tx, unit can be a collection of compartments. Although, not specifically described as units. Just different locations in the WMA areas.

Anyway, a bit clearer understanding in Tn, which helps, now.

wish fl had rational deer rules. on a conceptual basis,they don't really vary a lot from the 50s. for the most part FL hunting and fishing laws are strange. ie 5 bass/d 1 > 16". no min size limit. i have an idea that is commercially driven as is the gator setup rules. $ issues are in control.

We didn't really shop around at all. Wanted to maintain possession of all our junk. I have a full wood shop and basic metal fab tools including a big ass, albeit crappy, welding table, plus equipment to maintain a large yard. Could definitely see Pods as a good solution.

We threw away 40 cubic yards of stuff. I don't know you, but the one thing I know about you is you have way more stuff than you realize.

To any moving from a place, to a more free, quiet, quaint, etc place...
There will come a time when you think "You know what would meke this place better?..."
Make sure you stop yourself there. You went there because small changes happened over time to where you came from to make it the hell hole it is now. Feel free to enjoy it just as it is, do up your home and land however you like, but don't even entertain the thought of changing a law, ordinance, policy, etc.
As soon as you do, the answer to the 'what would make it better'- is if you'd go back to whete you came from.

Now, congrats on the move and the declutter. Settle in, and build a life you'd like to see your kids live where life is good. In any rural community- it's just like gardening; you get out of it what you put into it. Enjoy.

My first Tennessee deer hunting experience was in Lawrence where my buddy had a lease.

I froze my ass off in a tree stand for nothing. . . good times!

Damn yankee here [1 year on the gulf coast] moved from a nice place in NJ to a nicer place in florida PCB . The movers did almost everything for 8 grand [we are too old to pack and load a rental]. 3500 planned houses in a gated over 55 brand new community [one third built] VERY FEW from florida BUT we all brought our piles of dirty yankee money with us to spend down here .

Congratulations! Happy to see someone get out of this God forsaken state. I’m stuck here because my wife doesn’t want to move away from family and my child has only one set of grandparents. Don’t wanna take that away from her.

Enjoy that freedom brother! I can partially feel that relief on your behalf. 🎉
