Why tf are you wanting to break the stock down and remove the action screw? And why are you upset with having to recheck your zero if you did? I recheck my zero every trip. It takes 2-5 shots. Better to know your zero is correct and the misses are happening because you can't shoot a magnum worth a shit. If you're going twice a year you better be confirming your zero because it's going to move with the seasons, even 0.1 or 0.2 mil. Which is less than you'll miss by at a mile with no skill.

Dude, the “but muh rights” crowd be damned, a long range precision bolt action is a luxury item. If you need to wait to get paid in order to scrape the bottom tier of this category, you’re not ready to wade into this particular pool. Sort the rest of your life out. Marry your fiancé. Buy a house. Start a retirement account. Then, when you can buy pretty much what you want when you want, go buy that long range gun.

If you absolutely need to scratch that itch, and only have access to 100 yards locally, 22lr is your baby.

It’s almost like these types of guys have read a cheat sheet on how to get along with others. “Be relentlessly upbeat”, “Ask for clarification” etc this cheat sheet says.

But the poor fellows don’t understand the basic ground rules for how two normal adults interact when one asks for help and, crucially, how to accept the help given.

And then they get confused as to why they are constantly met with such hostility.

I have some empathy for you. But realize, if you are not an engineer or, especially in this context, a machinist, DO NOT engage in a debate as how you are right in their field of expertise.

Unless you like people making fun of you.

You might ask questions around the edges to gauge their actual level of knowledge or to potentially remind them of some crucial thing they forgot, but yeah. Go easy.

The overpowering need to debate in the face of superior knowledge, expertise, schooling etc combined with weird “upbeatness” is a dead giveaway to (what I’m coining) Autistic Forum Behavior.

Correct, so moving obvious rifle cases in and out presents obvious security issues.

There is zero (concealed) storage space in the vehicle. It is a wheelchair van for transporting my fiancé, there is a drivers seat and a rear bench, the rest is just open floor, the area behind the rear bench is minimal and open to view from outside.

I wasn’t aware the unbolting the barreled action made the components invisible. You’re playing mental gymnastics over thinking some really dumb shit.

Tint your windows and don’t just leave shit laying in the vehicle if you’re that worried about it.

Better yet buy stuff that’s actually worth owning and insure it.

Eh.. It's probably less of an issue than you're probably imagining. Most people don't give a shit about what others are doing in a city (speaking from experience having lived in two different major cities, one with a population over 2 million and one over 7 million) and if you're leaving your firearm in the van for a long enough period where it could get stolen, then you're just being negligent.

If your neighborhood is really bad enough, then you're better off saving money and moving to a better neighborhood. That would have daily benefits by improving your quality of life compared to having a firearm that spends most of its life in a closet.

Wheelchair + big heavy bag = easy excuse, "It's a bag of stuff to help my fiance to get by."

Buy an electric piano/keyboard case

That's cheaper than just the barreled action is showing for online right now. So, not only do you get a barreled action, and a KRG Bravo stock, but also a basic TriggerTech Field trigger, so you have a complete gun, ready to slap an optic on it, and go to the range.

He could literally buy the Solus Bravo for $1,065 + the Arken EP5 5-25x56 for like $450 + $150 for a good set of ARC rings, and have a hell of a decent beginner shooter for under $1,750.

Hey OP... Just buy this and buy the nice rifle and don't worry about having to break it all down each time... Your neighbors won't suspect shit...

The case is 45.25" internal length. A 22" Solus rifle with non-folding chassis is roughly 42" long, so you got plenty of room to fit it in there without having to break anything down.

I just want to gather all the information possible before making an expensive (to me) purchase. I do multiple threads for the simple reason that I like to divide substantially different questions in to different discussions rather than one long muddled mess of a thread where half the questions are never addressed because it gets derailed or hyper focussed on something else. Also for the simple reason that as I learn more I get new questions.

I’m a researcher in the sense that I tend to research any given topic that interests me to death, over analyze, and take pleasure in the minutia. And yes, I also enjoy writing. I was the guy who in college that would take the 5 point extra credit assignment that was to simply write a paragraph or two on a given topic and instead turn in a 5 page, 1,500+ word research paper, complete with citations, which I would bang out in one night over an hour or two. And I was already getting a perfect A and had absolutely no need for the minimal 5 points of extra credit. I did it because I enjoyed doing it. I also never studied, and was genuinely surprised when I walked in to class and discovered that it was midterm or finals day then just sat down and casually got 100% without even trying. Why, because I enjoyed learning, payed attention and absorbed the material, and that involved and still involves asking questions and wading deep in to minutia even if it was not directly applicable. FYI I completed a 4 year degree in 3 years with a perfect 4.0 and picked up a few 2 year degrees in the process. I miss school.

Only when I have learned all possible information, and shopped extensively do I make a purchase decision because by that time I understand what I am looking at and am aware of the cheapest possible way to get what I want while making minimal sacrifice to what I desire.

I suppose in that way I am kindof cold and AI like as you put it.

You are incorrect though that I am not a shooter, I am, I have been since I was 8 and was even a pistol instructor for awhile, years ago, and I spent much of my late teens and 20s collecting and shooting milsurp stuff then refocussed to tactical style shooting, briefly played with the idea of cowboy action shooting (I would like to revisit that), and now that I am older, heavier, achier, and with slowly aging eyes, I am interested in long range shooting vs running and gunning squinting through iron sights and red dots. Unfortunately, I am entirely new to that aspect and am in my research stage before dipping my toes in. I also dabble in some light gunsmithing and restoration work. Plus I can reload. My ammo budget is limited, as are my opportunities to visit the range, but you are incorrect to assume that I do not shoot.

And yes, I am that broke, I don’t make a whole lot and my fiancé can’t work (Cerebral Palsy) and she has medical costs. Shooting is expensive for me but it is my escape from an otherwise very frustrating life of working to just pay the bills and never really being able to enjoy myself, so I make allowances for it, but I do have my limits. It is frustrating though when some here seem to bizarrely take issue with that and react with hostility to simple questions and that I dare try and stay within a reasonable budget.

Now that you know a little more about me maybe you can lay off some of the assumptions?

I actually like that, thanks. Might just pick one up someday. My concern is that guitars tend to be expensive stealable items too, but certainly less so than guns, however given the length that’s probably about the best bet for a non folder.

Escape won't help ease the load off your shoulder, sucks but it's true. Buying a rifle you can barely afford or use will only add to your burden. You buy a rifle, you feel good, fondle it for 1-2 weeks, maybe take it out to the range once, then into a closet it goes, sitting there largely forgotten until many months later when maybe you can afford to go again. Meanwhile the bills are still there, every day life costs continue to increase, sudden life events now add onto the bills and if you find yourself strained enough, the thoughts will weigh on your mind, "where do I find the money to pay for some of these bills?" "what if I hadn't bought that rifle?", "how much can I get for it if I sell it now?". You'll sell it and take a loss and then realize the temporary joy you received was not worth what you initially paid. The money is really better off getting you some more breathing room when it comes to bill payments. You're on the edge of falling prey to a type of materialism that you can't afford.

You're probably thinking, "I'm good a guy, I deserve nice things, I deserve to have some fun sometimes, I've been responsible and I can make this work" and you see the cool stuff and try your best on figuring out how to obtain something similar things, BUT, the budget is not reasonable for the requirements you're desiring. Right now you're probably at the stage where you think you can still make it work despite being told otherwise, but research more and you will ultimately come to a conclusion that while many here are harsh in tone, the truth is spoken and your planned course of action is foolish.

So...

While you're still in research mode, I strongly suggest you consider precision rimfire. 22lr can be shot even in indoor ranges so no need to drive 5 hours away just to get some trigger time. You might be thinking to yourself, dinky little .22lr is for children but get a Tikka T1x, CZ 457 .22lr, Bergara BMR, Springfield Armory 2020 Rimfire, Ruger Precision Rimfire, or something else, slap an Arken optic on it (total $1000 for rifle + scope), buy around $500 worth (about 1500-3000rds) of match .22lr ammo (Lapua, Eley, SK, etc) sign up for a NRL22 club match (base class) in your area and go have a blast. Don't worry about your score or other peoples' scores. You're not there to compete, you're just there to enjoy the challenge that the match directors set up. When you finish you first match, you'll realize how fun and challenging it was AND affordable.

I can confirm, having handled rifles made by the new owners. They are as nicely finished as the rifles made in the 1970’s, which in their day were very nice, especially considering the money. I am seriously hoping they shoot as well as the fit and finish.

Maybe I am a snob, but at my age, if I’m going to purchase a rifle, it has to be a custom. That said, if money is really tight, a lot can be said for purchasing a barreled action, inexpensive chassis, and go to it.
