Putting the finishing touches on my build. Only issue I’m having is that the magazine lips extend too far up and prevent the bolt from closing. If I release the magazine and hold it just a bit lower, I can cycle rounds through without any issues.

How do folks go about trimming magazine lips? Just flip it upside down on a piece of sandpaper and scrub ‘till it fits?

Build info
Action: ARC CDG LA
Barrel: 280AI take-off from a savage ultralight (proof carbon)
Chassis: Grayboe Eagle Pro
BM: greyboe M5 DBM CIP
magazine: MDT polymer 3rd LA 30-06
Triggertech primary

I would be very cautious about removing material from the top of the lips. Doing so will widen the horizontal gap and may release rounds early or not hold them at all.

I would alter the magazine at the lock interface to make it sit lower. That’s assuming that the rifle and stock are correctly assembled.

If it works with the mag held down lower in a different place then trim the mag latch shorter so it hangs further.
BUT I would want to try a different mag, likely metal, first to see if it’s the plastic mag or bottom metal situation that’s funky right now.

For general info: if you watch the “mags, bolt handles, and conical breech” video on the ARC website, they describe how the CDG’s big ol’ bolt with a 6 o’clock lug is designed to work well with AICW mags (or AICS mags with 65thou trimmed to make them sit lower). However, the description on the website says that short actions need AIAW mags, but long actions work with AICS mags, which is what I based my build on. I think this must be a mistake, it doesn’t make any sense that the short actions would work any differently from the long actions, when they both have the same bolt face.

I sent ARC an e-mail letting them know about the issue so they can fix their website. Not a big deal, though. Looks like trimming 65thou off the latch or catch will make everything work fine.

Where are you going to find a long action double stack aw mag?
