When I arrived at my first Army Aviation assignment as a W1, my company commander gave me the Hollywood call sign “Hondo.” I knew Hondo was a cool John Wayne character and as a W1 you could be called much worse things, so who was I to argue? It was later in my career when I started participating in the hunting and shooting forums and I was an AH-64D instructor pilot so I chose Hondo64d as my forum handle.

I was hoping it was because maybe you were from Hondo, Texas.
Here is some useless trivia about Hondo, Texas. It is the place that spawned John Hillerman. He went to a voice coach and learned how to get away from a deep Texas accent and that allowed him to play man roles on stage and screen, including the role of Higgins on the original "Magnum, P.I."
Also, in "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls," the scenes of the african village where Ace endures the challenges of spears in his legs, the small village was built as a set just outside of Hondo.
But, alas, my hopes were dashed upon the hard rocks of reality.
