Donald Trump has warned that he could seize back the Panama Canal unless they agree to lower its costs and counter Chinese influence.

Donald Trump has warned that the United States could seize back the Panama Canal unless the country agrees to lower its costs and counter Chinese influence.
In a post on Truth Social, the incoming president urged the Panamanian government to start taking care of the canal or face the consequences.
He wrote:

The United States has a vested interest in the secure, efficient, and reliable operation of the Panama Canal, and that was always understood. We would and will NEVER let it fall into the wrong hands! It was not given for the benefit of others, but merely as a token of cooperation with us and Panama.
If the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to us, in full, and without question. To the Officials of Panama, please be guided accordingly!

Trump later followed up with another post explaining its role preserving America’s economic and national security:

The Panama Canal is considered a VITAL National Asset for the United States, due to its critical role to America’s Economy and National Security. A secure Panama Canal is crucial for U.S. Commerce, and rapid deployment of the Navy, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and drastically cuts shipping times to U.S. ports.
The United States is the Number One user of the Canal, with over 70 percent of all transits heading to, or from, U.S. ports. Considered one of the Wonders of the Modern World, the Panama Canal opened for business 110 years ago, and was built at HUGE cost to the United States in lives and treasure – 38,000 American men died from infected mosquitos in the jungles during construction.
Teddy Roosevelt was President of the United States at the time of its building, and understood the strength of Naval Power and Trade. When President Jimmy Carter foolishly gave it away, for One Dollar, during his term in Office, it was solely for Panama to manage, not China, or anyone else.
It was likewise not given for Panama to charge the United States, its Navy, and corporations, doing business within our Country, exorbitant prices and rates of passage. Our Navy and Commerce have been treated in a very unfair and injudicious way.
The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous, especially knowing the extraordinary generosity that has been bestowed to Panama by the U.S. This complete “rip-off” of our Country will immediately stop….

Panamanian officials have yet to respond to Trump’s warning, although it will be taken extremely seriously given the outsized role in plays in the country’s economy.

Upon turnover of the canal to Panama, The U.S. and Panama signed a Neutrality Treaty. That treaty essentially guarantees permanent neutrality of the canal and fair access for all nations. It also states that only Panama can operate the canal or maintain military installations in Panama. More importantly, it provides the U.S. with the right to exert military force in defense of the Panama Canal or its neutrality. That said, the Chicoms have been subverting the neutrality agreement by performing a fair degree of construction work and taking over entire islands in Panama under the guise of being commercial enterprises. Don’t forget we move a lot of military traffic through the canal and they are gathering up intel and building capabilities. This is all directly part of China’s BR Initiative, and Panama knows exactly what they are doing. My guess is so does the new CiNC and he’s putting them on notice.

When that canal was built, ships were MUCH smaller. The canal has had to be rebuilt and remodeled at least once that I am aware of to make it larger in an effort to remain viable for actual ship traffic. I'm pretty sure that more tons of goods are carried across the isthmus via truck and train than by ship. The US could easily do that within the border of the US...of course, at greater costs due to the US wages and all...but aren't we trying to dramatically and strategically reduce our reliance on cheap foreign labor and goods?

The canal is more important for IMPORTING goods to the USA than EXPORTING. Aren't we wanting to dramatically and strategically decrease our reliance on imports?

Further, let's say we do take it over...what are the maintenance and operational costs? Who picks up that tab? The consumer (already doing that) or the taxpayer? Aren't we wanting to reduce the amount of wasted US tax dollars?

It would appear there is going to be some further discussion of these issues between President Trump and President Mulino.
I suspect there is going to be a bilateral trade agreement opened and renegotiated between the USA and Panama. Perhaps tariffs on Panama goods flowing into the U.S. along with central American financial mechanisms, travel restrictions and potential other aspects coming into play.
In the end of that complicated dynamic, expect to see USA flagged carriers with negotiated special transit costs.

Given the inflation rate, the manufacturing index in the US under pressure, unemployment doing its thing, credit card rates so high and other factors they really have no choice but to make the dollars they have go farther. The consumer is trapped. The only ones who dont want to acknowledge where we are have their head in the sand or have financial reasons to keep the goods flowing in from overseas.

The American tax payer has been placed in this situation for many decades.

China already has some control of the canal. They control a significant portion of the port and have the political backing of the Panamanian government to be there, especially since they have come out against anything that means Panama cannot operate it independently.

The bigger issue is that we simply do not have the resources to carry out a successful Monroe Doctrine, and our adversaries have made allies out of a number of the countries in question. We need to get out DEI and get our war-making inventory back up to snuff. And realize what I said previously - it will be the US vs many other countries.

Your argument about the illegals inside the US falls flat - that dude was already here, invading down south isn't going to stop those here, especially those that are mental and/or have criminal aspirations. And invading those countries isn't going to stop those that are here from doing what they want to do. Stopping those that would come over now would involve putting up the wall and get it secured. We are about to find out if Trump will get it done. Those that are in here need to be dealt with through arrest, imprisonment and deportation; bringing the countries from which they came to heel isn't going to remediate what is ongoing inside the country. First thing we need to do is address the most immediate issues that are within our border.

We aren't invading any country down south in any formal manner for this particular, sole reason. We have enough bullshit going on around the world, and we don't have the armaments to address those issues, as has been repeatedly stated by US officials. What may happen with small teams is anyone's guess.
