I’ve been thinking of doing this. Gotta cut the skins, though, and the monopod is not as smooth as the one above (very minor issue for a 500yd dude like me lol).
Does anyone know what drove the redesign of the AT thumbhole rear end? The old design seems like it would handle rear bags better.
I’ve theorized in my head that the larger cutout was to facilitate using the support hand to grab the butt to both control the rifle’s direction better and to make it easier to pull it into the shoulder.
I’m thinking a bunch of scenarios were shooting without a rear bag in improvised positions, off windowsills, etc, where grabbing the butt was more important than ease of use with a rear bag.
Cutting is easy. Just need to be patient and take your time when using files or a serrated knife. Install is easy. Hardest part is taking the bolt for the Monopod to a machine shop if you don't have the right thickness butt pad spacer. But I pretty much use my Monopod as a bag rider for this reason. I have tried this using someone else's AT that was so equipped. It sucked for several reasons. You can quickly adjust a bag using hand pressure, but not so much with the monopod. It does not adjust quickly, and the range of possible adjustments is limited. I'm glad I got to try it before I cut my skins.
As said. Use the Monopod as a bag rider. You only deploy it in emergencies. And there's ways to use the Monopod for quick adjustment... You don't fully extend it. There's a nice video on how this is done:
That's the correct way to use one. Else, it is either used as a static locked Monopod to help with spotting or long term monitoring, or folded and just used as a bag rider when not deployed.
Oh, I know, I just meant if you don’t like the monopod you can’t go back to stock unless you have extra skins (I do). I was just mentioning that for the audience who might not know what is entailed.
Yeah, we’re on the same page. Folded up is how I was thinking of using it. Also, that’s the best vid I had ever found on the monopod’s use, and I believe it was linked from this thread, long ago. Thx for digging it up. Love this place!
I'm just not a huge fan of monopods and I didn't want to cut the skins so thats why I figured I'd incorporate it into the buttpad spacer.
I bought my 308 bolt probably 4 months before I even bought my AXSR. I think they were only in stock for a couple days when I was able to order mine. The struggle is real.
I've never seen one used at a match, but I don't see a lot of ATs at matches, either. To each their own. Another member here already has a product like yours, but it's metal. The concept is excellent. This is how I do it on my AT.
I bought all of the LH bolts and a spare LH shroud/firing pin assembly a year ago. Still don't have the rifle LOL

Unfortunately the rifle purchase was a bit of an impulse when I saw it on sale. Such is life.
