best place to buy factory ammo these days? maybe family run?

If you're willing to try some Norma, Raven Rocks Precision advertising here on the hide is GTG.
Raven Rocks is solid, I bought 600 rds of .223 Norma Golden Target from them. Shipped promptly, arrived promptly and undamaged, they replied quickly to email and did me a bit of a solid as well. I'll absolutely buy more from them.

Just bought several cases of 9mm from SGAmmo at a good price, though they do collect sales taxes ($81!!). I'll give Top Gun a try next time if I can save some bucks not paying tax.

sgammo, targetsportsusa, aeammo, recoilgunworks, riverviewmunitions, eurooptic, and milehighshooting.

These have all been solid places to order from, for me anyways.

I haven't ordered or bought ammo in general from anywhere other than target sports for years. They used to have the same or better pricing as my distributor pricing through RSR.

Palmetto State Armory has really become my go to place. AAC 77gr OTC sometimes on sale for .50/round. Shipping is usually pretty cheap as well. Yes, it's a little more expensive than PMC, Privi Part., etc. but worth the extra nickel IMHO.

Agree SG Ammo is also great to deal with.

Used to use Target Sports USA, particularly when I lived in a communist state that most companies wouldn't ship into. I feel like their prices have gone up in the last couple of years.

Midway USA often carries IMI XM193, which I've always been partial to. Worthwhile if you can find it on sale. Also, if you register, they give you a discount code on your birthday.
People online have reported inconsistencies from lot to lot with AAC ammo.

Have you found that to be the case?

I don't chrono. my loads, but I think that's true. And even within a given lot there is more variability in velocity than you would get with something like FGMM. However, for me, probably 80% of my shooting is 200 yards and in. At that distance accuracy has been very good out of a number of different uppers. The balance of my shooting, at least with an AR, is out to a maximum of 400 yards. And at that distance if I can reliably hit an IPSC steel target I'm happy, which I can generally do - at least on a good day. :) I have read that it's really once you get out beyond 400 yards that AAC 77 gr. starts to struggle but the range at my local club only goes out to 600 and if I'm shooting those distances it's going to be with a bolt gun and a heavier caliber/round.

So while I certainly have a bunch of XM193 stocked away, which I generally use if shooting offhand at 50 yards and in, I've started ordering AAC 77 gr. whenever it goes down to .50 per round.

AAC has stated powder availability has become a big issue.

My opinion is pre-2024, they were basically testing on the public and things were occasionally inconsistent as they tinkered with the loads and new equipment. Nothing massive, but some changes happened here and there along the way.

Just as it seemed AAC had the loads nailed down last year, they became constrained by powder, and instead of shutting down lines at their new ammo plant, they are using what powders they can get.
Creating the accuracy and velocity inconsistencies reported on other forums.

I just use ammo seek and find who can get me what I want the cheapest rather it be bulk reloads from reputable sources or better stuff. Seems like the most competitive places on factory ammo are smaller companies that I would assume are family owned. 🤷‍♂️

Agree, big fan of SG ammo as well. Another option, if you like IMI (either 55 gr. or Razorcore 77gr) and are willing to pay a premium for it is Midway. Sometimes you can catch it on sale and if you sign up with them you can get a coupon on your birthday which will give you special pricing.
