Looks like Gray Ops is going to offer AW mags for 308 Win.

Consistency. You can get close with stamping and bending, but by going to billet you shouldn't be bending feed lips anymore. What's the benefit of billet AW mags besides the +2 capacity?
How much consistency do you need? It's a magazine every dimension doesn't need to be +-.001.Consistency. You can get close with stamping and bending, but by going to billet you shouldn't be bending feed lips anymore.
Plenty of guys bending feed lips to get shit running well. Look at all the problems ARC had with their mags. Some worked, others didn't.How much consistency do you need? It's a magazine every dimension doesn't need to be +-.001.
Honestly I didn't realize folks were bending feed lips on AW mags. Ive never had an issue feeding with out of the box mags. 6.5cm, 308 and 6gt all have fed flawlessly with unmodified mags.
If I had to guess, the material change is a huge part. In steel, machine time goes up and tool life goes down. You're also adding laser weld instead of regular assembly with screws. Why so much more than the BR mags?
So these are mostly for the r700, 2lug etc actions with AW cuts?Plenty of guys bending feed lips to get shit running well. Look at all the problems ARC had with their mags. Some worked, others didn't.
I'd imagine they're for anybody who'd be interested in an AW mag that holds 12 rounds including guys running AI rifles, but yeah Gray Ops heavily targets the PRS/NRL shooters and most of those guys are running some form of R700 pattern AW cut 2 lug action. So these are mostly for the r700, 2lug etc actions with AW cuts?
Ah, I didn't catch that they were welded steel. If I had to guess, the material change is a huge part. In steel, machine time goes up and tool life goes down. You're also adding laser weld instead of regular assembly with screws.
To make a 12rd AW mag is a lot easier than that. Cut out the center of the floorplate with a cutoff wheel, clean up the cut, then follow the instructions to install an AICS extension (I used an Area419 one). Took me about 10min and no issues through almost of year of matches. They are really expensive, but if you wanted to build your own 12 round AI AW, you're looking at buying 2 mags, chopping them, and TIG welding those together unless you get creative with an extension.
Can absolutely do that, but you'll likely add more length to the bottom than TIG welding another one, and I've seen the short tabs bend over timeTo make a 12rd AW mag is a lot easier than that. Not as elegant a solution as these Grey Ops mags though for sure.
That's a good point. Mine are definitely a bit longer than necessary and the tabs have bent a bit. Easy enough to bend them back when I check over my gear every now and then. Can absolutely do that, but you'll likely add more length to the bottom than TIG welding another one, and I've seen the short tabs bend over time
It’s as good or better. Because those will actually fit my current mags.To make a 12rd AW mag is a lot easier than that. Doesn’t work in two separate AI rifles. Zero drop free in my AT-LE and to even get them to seat I had to dremel the fuck out of them, and my friends AT-X they won’t drop free or even fit.I'd imagine they're for anybody who'd be interested in an AW mag that holds 12 rounds including guys running AI rifles, but yeah Gray Ops heavily targets the PRS/NRL shooters and most of those guys are running some form of R700 pattern AW cut 2 lug action.
I have 5 AW mags and I’ve never hand 11 round drag, at all.Lot of prs stages are 12rd. Makes sense time wise to have a 12-13rd mag. Stock AI can hold 11rds but it’s tight and you definitely notice drag when you feed the first one.
Looks like a great product option to have. If it’s too expensive or you don’t need it, don’t buy it.
4 AW mags here and same deal. Never had an issue loading 11 or felt any different running the action on that first or any other round.I have 5 AW mags and I’ve never hand 11 round drag, at all.
I don’t have an AW-fed .308 rifle, but when I compared loading 308 vs 6.5 in the Gray Ops mag, the cartridge stack didn’t behave much differently so I’m not sure who these mags are for because they feed like dog shit. They do drop free in my impact actions with Hawkins and MDT bottom metals fine. Guess I’ll be running regular AWs for rifles only, because these aren’t gonna work. They also don’t feed my 6.5 cm that well. I’ve had a few bolt over issues in my AW where it wouldn’t pick the round up. Regular AWs work perfect. These don’t.
Yea I’m sorta mad I dropped 400 dollars on two mags I had to dremel the fuck out of to make them work.I don’t have an AW-fed .308 rifle, but when I compared loading 308 vs 6.5 in the Gray Ops mag, the cartridge stack didn’t behave much differently so I’m not sure who these mags are for because they feed like dog shit.
They specifically said they tested them on an AT-X.Yea, I would assume that it's likely these mags are made for 2 lug actions.
Not what they said in the email I sent them.I assume these AW mags designed primarily to work with non-AI rifles.

The 6BRA ones I have are flawless in my AI AT-LE, and my impact with manners minichassis.I don't anticipate buying these, but I'm grateful for the reviews.
My 6GT GrayOps mags are great, however. They feed like butter on my Impact Actions (Foundation and Vision chassis).
Sounds like it would have been simpler just to send them back if they didn’t work for you.Yea I’m sorta mad I dropped 400 dollars on two mags I had to dremel the fuck out of to make them work.
Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, well I’m just a dumbass I guess.
They worked in my other actions. Just wanted them to work in one of the guns I use the most. It was basically just taking some of the finish off in most places.Sounds like it would have been simpler just to send them back if they didn’t work for you.
AW has a milled step at the front that’s the easiest way to tell. Compare the bit on the left ahead of the actual opening in the action.I do not really see the difference below.
I purchased an Impact 737R back in February of 2023, but it was not direct from Impact. It was purchased from Altus, so who knows when they purchased it and whether it is AW cut, or not.
So I am looking at the picture below and trying to figure out the differences.

I have an email out to them for tips or tricks. The issue is, especially in cottage industries like this one, returning anything you’ve used is either impossible or not worth it. I expect to be able to return both my tested (read: can’t be sold as new) and untested one magazines if there’s an unsat answer because this is a design issue.Sounds like it would have been simpler just to send them back if they didn’t work for you.

Also what’s the fun in that?![]()
My issue is it still occurs with .308 too, I just can’t substantiate a feeding issue because my only .308 is a Surgeon.ah I see now. I had that issue with 6.5 creed too. It would bolt over 1-2 rounds.
I dremel’d and sanded the front and rear pretty heavy to get it to fit in my AT, I sent them the pictures. The latch height is also different than standard AW mags atleast in the two that I have. I’m not indicating that gray ops isn’t “stand up”. I’m indicating ymmv, these might require fitting, but for 200 bucks apiece shouldn’t require me whipping out a Milwaukee sander and dremel to make sure they fit in a literal gun they were designed for (AT-LE and an AT-X).Im so confused - it went from "dremel the fuck out of them" to "taking some of the finish off".
IDK, Gray Ops seems like a pretty standup group of lads - its annoying AF if they dont work, but Id like to think theyd take em back.

The milled step plus the inlet for the mag is slightly different. I sent my NonAW cut ones back to Tate and he cut them for me.
That action is not cut for AW'sSo this is peering up my magwell.
