Switch barrel rifles for precision rifle competitions? DTA vs AI AT vs ?

A lot of people are very high on DTAs. I got behind one and put some rounds downrange last year and I wasnt really impressed. Additionally, I just found the ergonomics of the bolt positioning very awkward. Shot an AI AE and fell in love. Ended up getting an older model AX when Mile High marked...

    Feeding reliability with various actions

Agreed. I have 3 Win 70/FN actioned rifles with CRF and they function like a Swiss watch. The only way to improve on them is to go with an AI, which is what I did. The CRF rifles are all hunting rifles and the AI is my precision rifle.

    WTK Accuracy International AW prices

With both barrels, I was thinking $5000 or so. Beware, once you own an AI, you will never be satisfied by anything else!

    Winchester action builds

I have 3 customs on Winchester 70/FN actions. I have owned Remingtons but wouldnt even consider a Remington. The CRF is a better action in every meaningfuly way in my opinion. Only way to improve is to step up to an AI.

who trues savage action with minimal lead time

Wouldnt send anything to SSS even if they said they would do it for free! Kevin Rahill is a man of his word and met his promise time for work he did for me.

Which bullet in a 260/6.5 for UKD shooting?

I did some testing with 130s and what little gain that was available in short to medium trajectory was more than lost to the wind. Living in Western Oklahoma, long ranges and high winds are the everyday norm. I wont even bother with the lighter bullets, even for coyote hunting.

Getting a new barrel, what else to do at the same time?

Cerakote is a very good and durable finish and worth the effort. I would seriously consider having you trigger replaced with a Timney. Once your stock is beddded, it will let you take full advantage of your barrel and action work.

    Vortex scope

Easily the best value out there. I have one and really like it.

First Build, 22" 6.5 Creedmoor. Thoughts?

I have a fluted Medium Palma at 22" on my hunting rifle in 26. With optics and bipod, it weighs in right at 10 lbs and balance is perfect. It is a real joy to shoot from field positions and again, less than 50 ft/sec difference from a 26" barrel with the same load.

First Build, 22" 6.5 Creedmoor. Thoughts?

You will not lose anywhere near 100 ft/sec. I have a 22" barrel on my hunting 260 and it was less than 50 ft/sec slower than my 26" match rifle. Go for it. I'm never going over 22" again. Love the balance of a rifle with a shorter barrel more than the insignificant velocity gain.

    Are Timney triggers worth it?

Another vote for the Timney. I cant stand the vague mush feel of the Jewell. Damn things choke on the red dust that gets into everything here in Western Oklahoma.

Criterion Barrel & Remage Barrel Nut Setup in 6.5 Creedmoor - Worked great for me!

Yes they are. I had one and it was just as accurate as my Bartlein and Rock barrels.

    Remington CSR chassis

Agreed. The AI is a superior rifle anyway.

My First Rifle... Savage, Remington or Ruger?

You do realize that Bill Ruger died, the company has done a 180 on that position and now makes some very good ARs?

Barrel length for 260 or 6.5x47 Lapua

My deer rifle is a 22" 260 and is actually faster than my 24" heavy precision rifle. I have come to be a real fan of shorter barrels for real world shooting. If all of your shooting will be from prone, then barrel weight and length dont mean much. When you have to hold from field positions, you...

My First Rifle... Savage, Remington or Ruger?

Did the Savage thing, took my ass whipping and never looking back. Cheaply made POS. Even if you replace everything but the reciever with aftermarket parts, it is likely to be accurate but have other design related functioning issues (again, been there done that.) There is a LOT more to a rifle...

    win. m.70 rebarrel question

If you reload, the 280 is an excellent round. If not, the 06 has lots more options in factory ammo.

    Are Timney triggers worth it?

Have had the Jewell and dont care for it. Love my Timney though.

Criterion Barrel & Remage Barrel Nut Setup in 6.5 Creedmoor - Worked great for me!

Feeding and cycling issues as well as a crap trigger design. Took a financial ass whipping to sell it (another problem with Savages) and finally pulled the trigger on a real AI. Best move I ever made. Nothing, repeat, NOTHING else even comes close. Best move I ever made.

Criterion Barrel & Remage Barrel Nut Setup in 6.5 Creedmoor - Worked great for me!

Looks like a virtual clone of the Savage I built in 260 last year in a AICS. It was accurate, but I got tired of the other issues that come with a Savage. Edit - Just realized that it is a Remage instead of a Savage. Much more likely to be a keeper. Glad it shoots for you.
