    Magnum hunting rifle dilemma

So I don’t see as much of an advantage going with a 7mm vs say a 300/338. That’s just me though. I love 6.5’s and .308’s for the lessened recoil factor, but I just find it hard to justify getting another rifle of the same caliber to lessen carry weight. The 7mm in a lighter gun will still kick...

    Magnum hunting rifle dilemma

So I have a M70 XTR sporter mag in .338 win. Took it to AK and shot a moose with it. All good there. I had some feed issues and decided to play with it to possibly dial it in for some mid range elk hunts. I generally find it hates the heavier bullets. Found a good node with 230 eld-x, but groups...

    .338 win mag 1-12 twist?

Picking up a new rifle this week for hunting Alaska. I wasn’t paying attention when I ordered and assumed it was a 1-10 twist, but I just saw it’s actually 1-12. A little on the slow side, but do you think I’ll have any issues with 230 grain eld-x bullets? Should be able to get them to 2800-2850...

Rifle Scopes Mounting rings REALLY close to objective?

Ok, I feel better now. My OCD is contained. Thanks guys!

Rifle Scopes Mounting rings REALLY close to objective?

Any issues with mounting the rings really close to the objective? Picked up a SWFA 3-9 on my hunting rifle. Best place for my eyes ended up being very close to the bell. Using Seekins rings and Burris Xtreme bases. I could move the rings one notch back, or leave it. Scope is working fine. I...

Rifle Scopes SWFA Fixed vs 3-15?

I was really tempted at the 3-15 for $399, but bought the 3-9 instead for a hunting rifle. I had the fixed 10x once and the view was just not as crisp as my 5-20hd. That experience made me think I’m better off with the HD line, so paid an extra $50 for the 3-9.

Gunsmithing Cerakote action with sticky bolt

I have a Win M70 that I use primarily as a hunting rifle, but planning on making some mods to set it up as a semi long range rig this year. Mostly new stock, barrel, and break. I had the gun cerakoted years ago, and I think the guy was a little sloppy in his application. The action was a little...

Rifle Scopes Lightweight base and rings for a large magnum

The gun came with a Leupold one piece mount. I could use some Leupold 30mm rings and call it good if that’s a solid option.

Rifle Scopes Lightweight base and rings for a large magnum

In recent years I’ve been using a picatinny rail and Seekins rings combo for a couple rifles. I have a large magnum hunting rifle I’m going to customize for hunting and wanted to see if anyone had any recommendations for a lighter weight option. I’m considering maybe going with some Warne...

New build off a .338 Win Mag

All good points to consider. I haven’t tried the Hornady bullets yet. I do reload, and enjoy reloading a lot. I have to admit I haven’t tinkered a ton with this .338. Mostly just tried a few bullet combos and found it liked 225 grain accubonds over some RL19 and haven’t tinkered any further...

New build off a .338 Win Mag

Just got back from an Alaska moose hunt and all of us had .338 wm. All three bulls took 2-3 rounds to drop them and in some cases the bullets didn’t pass through the hide on the backside. I was pretty surprised. Shooting 225 grain Nosler partitions. I mean they did the job, but it changed my...

    Angled shooting question

Sounds good! I’ll go back to using the actual distance and cosine. Now to find the manual and figure out how to change that mode in my Leica......Thanks!

    Angled shooting question

Even though I live out west and have the opportunity to practice shooting at steep angles, I haven’t practiced it yet. When using a rangefinder like my Leica 1600 R, I range a target and it gives me corrected value after factoring the angle. So for example a 500 yard target at a steep angle...

    6.5 Creedmoor with 143 gr ELD-X

Tikka barrels are notoriously on the slow side. Don’t know anything about that powder though. I’m running the same bullets with .02” jump, 42 gr 4350, Lapua brass, cci 450, and a 24” Benchmark barrel gets me 2780 FPS.

6.5 Creedmoor three way trimmers other than Giraud?

That kind of answers it for me. It’s almost 50/50 to not have to trim my Lapua brass after firing. If it won’t chamfer and deburr without the need to trim, kind of makes sense just to stick with the Lyman prep center.

6.5 Creedmoor three way trimmers other than Giraud?

I’ve done a fair amount of research and read a lot of mixed bag reviews of all the three way trimmers for the 6.5. I usually load 200-300 rounds a month of 6.5 CM, and it’s by far my highest volume caliber. I’m using Lapua brass and often times it doesn’t really need much of a trim in...
