    Honestly, shoot the barrel out. Then get the action trued and a barrel put on. During that time if you want the smith to put on the bolt handle do so or check KRG bolt lift.

    The Remington 5r is a perfect starting rifle. I would say in .308 like most of the people here, especially since it is the first.     New build....advice wanted

    I like the vortex viper PST 4-16 and 6-24 FFP EBR-1 Mrad, you may want the 6-24 for the zoom. You could also take a look at bushnells 6-24 tactical elite FFP G2DMR these are nice. These are the 3 I would recommend in the $800 - $1000 price range

    Grinding off is not a good idea. If you want a similar brake but flush with the gun. Get the GA precision Titan brake, you need to have them put it on for you though. The Titan brake needs to be timed. The MRAD brake has that tightening screw so that you can put it on yourself.

    stockdoc is right about the cheek weld but you can build a cheek piece. This takes trial and error trying to get the proper height and you will have to take the cheek piece off to clean your barrel unless you take the full action off.
