I would like to start shooting long range stuff. I have a good friend who does it a lot and sire commending my first rifle as an off the shelf " get started"rifle. He is recommending a Remington 7005R .300 win mag. I already have a 5.5-22 NF from an old 50 bmg I tinkered with. Is this a rifle that can off the shelf deliver MOA at 1000-1200? I am not on a dirt budget, but I can't tie up much more than $ 1,500 to get started. Thanks for your advice guys. I have been lurking for years. There is a lot of good ideas here. Thanks!!!!

300wm won't be recommended much as a first rifle. Given the criteria of "first rifle, moa to 1K and $1,500" I would probably reccomend the savage LRP series or a remington 5R in .308

I think if you told us a little more about how you plan on shooting - e.g "straight from pickup bed to bench 3 times a year" or "I want to run in some local tac matches next year" or "my buddy and I will be hiking in our gear every month to put in work" will better help us point you in the right direction.

Yeah I could have been more specific. My best friend and I already do 3 gun an have wanted to get into long range shooting. We will shoot from various positions on his range between 300-1200 yards. I've always been intrigued by the .300 win mag. So I think I'd like to give it a try. These wont be safe queens. We shoot our guns and run them weekly or bi weekly. I will look at the Savage as well. Thanks for the input.

quite a few folks will try to talk you out of a savage.. but you might could get one in 300wm. and have enough left over for a chassis as well under 1500. find the triple digit actions 111, etc, which are LA in savage. then you could fairly cheaply swap calibers as you choose going up or down from the 300WM.

#00 Win Mag 5R

I'd buy the 5R Remmy.. It's a great 308 gun, for me, and I just orderd the 223. Mine shoots lights out. I'm "in the loop" for a 300, so I have all three. They're great shooters. If you want an "oh my god" great shooter, get a TRG 42, in 300 Win Mag, if you can find one.Fantastic rifle!

I also think a 300WM doesn't make for a great first long range rifle. It has a magnum appetite for powder, barrels and whooping your ass.

300WMs have their place, I just think you'll know it when you (truly) want/need one.

Lafayette suggested a Savage LRP, which I think is a fabulous choice. Available in 6.5CM and 260 Remington, both cartridges hammer at 1000 yards and are rather capable beyond. They nearly match the trajectory of a 300WM, but do it without eating 75gr of powder and 1/1500th your barrel every time you pull the trigger. They come in a quality stock (HS Precision), have a detachable box magazine, a nice fat barrel, and can be had to your door for under $1000. What's not to like?

For $1,500 Bucks you can get a Tikka T3 Scout (Same Barrel used on SAKO TRG22 Rifles) and one of the Smoothest Actions and Factory Triggers on the Market (Better than Remington or Savage) don't take my word for it, just find one and try it for yourself.

They run $600-$700 at Cabelas if you can find one or order one from them. Sell the Factory Stock/Drop Mag (LOTS OF PEOPLE WANT THEM) Then invest the Rest in a KRG Whisky 3 Folder Chassis altogether right around $1,500 and you'll have yourself a Hell of a Rifle To Shoot and Show! Here's some pictures of Mine before I sold it to fund my TRG22 Purchase.

Good Luck and Cheers!

Ok, so you guys think I should take a step back and get a .308 to learn the art and craft of long range, and then once we confirm the bug has bit me, then spend endlessly on the .300 , .338's , etc?

No. If you want a 300 Win Mag then get one! You said you already shoot 3 gun, so get something that intrigues you and makes you want to go shoot it. Keep in mind that factory ammo for a 300 WM is expensive, and reloading for it is a bit pricey too. 308 is good all around, jack of all trades but master of none. 223 is a good training / low cost centerfire cartridge that basically performs like an anemic 308.

The Savage 12 LRP in 6.5 CM is a good option. You can "usually" get factory ammo for the 6.5, and it's ballistics are comparable to the 300 WM (not as much umph behind it though).

I am a big fan of the Rem 700 5R. Milehighshooting often has them and will even drop one in a AICS chassis, which in my view is a great all around setup. The advantage of the Rem 700 action is that it is much more convenient to customize and accessorize. With the right load, my wife's 5R shoots 1/2 MOA at 100 yds and about 3/4 MOA at 400 yds.

I've never shot a .300 win mag. I am hearing it isn't to pleasant to shoot 50 times a day unless you have a nice brake on it. For practicality, my range I use a lot is a private range and is 750 yards. The .300 is way beyond that I suppose anyway.

I would suggest that you get a .243 or a .260 rifle. Both of those will reach out to 1500 yards + for paper punching and get you there with a lot less pounding than the Win Mag 300 will. Also both of those calibers work well in matches and hunt well. Getting a .308 rifle is an interesting choice, however at 1200 yards it takes a lot more work to get good groups than a .243 with the Berger hybrid bullets. Also in .243, you can get a lot of good hunting rounds all over the place so it's a nice choice.

The Remington 5r is a perfect starting rifle. I would say in .308 like most of the people here, especially since it is the first. That being said if you really like to get .300 mag then you should get what you want. You may want to try the .300 mag first, since you haven't shot it yet. I'm sure you will enjoy the .308 though, you can practice a lot more with the stock barrel. The magnums and .243 are barrel burners.

Good advise from Onoko, actually try as many rifles and calibers as you can. As far as advises, you are at the right place with SH.
Good shooting.

Well here's a Link to a Thread I've posted last year. You'll see that I've owned Remington 700 5R 20inch and the Tikka T3 Scout 20" both in .308 at the Same Time. The 5R Cost More New but more after market option and upgrades available. However all said and done the Tikka T3 was $300 Less than the 5R but had Better Action, Better Trigger, and just Better Quality in General.

Though I was still Very New to precision rifles at the time, I could achieve much better groups and hits with the Tikka compare to the 5R. The Tikka made it so easy where the 5R took much more effort. The only reason I sold the Tikka was because of getting a TRG22.

As far as .300 WM Goes it is one of those things you'd want one just because. I was going for a TRG42 .338 LM until I realized how expensive it'll be to own and shoot one of those. Now a TRG42 in .300 WM would be just about perfect but those are Very Hard to find these days.

Since I sold my .308 5R and kept the 5R in my Profile Name it was only proper to put a meaning behind it so at the End I purchased a 5R in .300 WM for a smoking deal. It have the same stainless finish and I got rid of the HS Precision stock as soon as I could. Now it sits in a PDC Custom Folder Stock and yes, this one shoots Dam Good and definitely lives up to the 5R name.

Not trying to sway you in anyway, but since I've been there and done that, just want to share my experience and what little knowledge I have with your choices. Hopefully it'll give you some insights on your decision.

Here my .300 WM 5R in the PDC, 1/2 MOA or better All Day Long...

What about the 700 police. I've got a 5r win mag and a .300 win mag police. The P shoots better. A lot better. All I did was put a Thruster brake and get a trigger job. Shooting 10" groups at 1200 yards with a 208 amax. This is just my rifles. Not saying its a better rifle in general. And op.... You can shoot to the moon with a 5.5x22 NF. Get a good solid base, good rings and your set. Do you hand load? Makes a lot of difference..
