Gunsmithing Importance of bedding a scope base

It has take me a long time to figure this stuff out about scope bases. 1958 in 2nd grade we are shown a 16mm film on friction. It shows gravity force vertical and friction force horizontal as the block is dragged with a string. The ratio between those two numbers is the coefficient of friction...

    338 Lapua alternative?

If you are into playing with Quickload and Quicktarget to play "what if?" there are a couple of real spoilers: The 338 Lapua loaded to the threshold of long brass live and backed off a reasonable safety margin is barely different from the 338 Win Mag treated the same. The 22-250 Sav loaded to...

Gunsmithing Drill Press: Grizzly or Jet?

I have a 40 year old Jet bench top drill press from the japan days. I got it used in 1978. I also have an even older Rockwell floor standing drill press that is American. I got it from the previous owner's widow. I have updated the chucks of both drill presses to key-less, but I cannot update...

Gunsmithing AR from Aluminum Soda Cans

In jr high shop in 1965 we cast Aluminum alloy. The shop teacher told us it was possible to cast brass with the furnace we were using, by putting glass in that melted, floated to the top, and acted as insulator so the brass got hotter. But we never did. Aluminum melts at 1200 F and brass melts...

Gunsmithing AR from Aluminum Soda Cans

Myfordboy says Aluminum cans are a poor choice for casting. He has hundreds of casting videos, but here is the one where he explains that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FJRCgHjdeA

    .243 vs 6mm cm

I have reamers for and have built rifles in 6mmRem, 243Win, and 6mmBR. I like the 6mmBR. The RP and Lapua brass for the 6mmBR are better than I deserve. It can kill antelope way out there with 29 gr IMR-4451 95 gr Nos Bal Tip 2800 fps.

Gunsmithing How much do you open barrel breech for PTG R700 magnum bolt for the AR15 type extractor?

I was calculating and measuring and thought 0.717" was going to work. It did not. I just kept boring out 0.002" at a time until it worked at 0.731".

Gunsmithing How much do you open barrel breech for PTG R700 magnum bolt for the AR15 type extractor?

The extractor will not snap over the case rim when the bolt head is down in a 0.700" hole.

    Gunsmithing Lathe advice!

I am on my 4th lathe in gunsmithing, with a PM1236 since 2009. In 8 years I have done ~ 25 rifle barrel threads and chambers, but mostly other stuff. With DRO, I have $4k into it. I have repaired the gearbox. I have repaired the DRO. My opinion is shared by a few..... Not enough old surplus...

    308 win lapua palma brass

Lapua brass, if made by Lapua, seems to need the least preparation, except the 308 Palma brass, if to be turned into 260 brass. Where 10% of most brand 308 brass will interfere in a SAAMI 260 chamber, ALL of the Lapua will. The necks are thicker.

Forster Honed Neck of FLS Die to Wrong Dimension, Thoughts?

I was complaining on forums 10 years ago that bushings dimensions are a no go and Forster hones are a go. Forster on the phone never speaks to me like anything other than a dumb consumer [Sweet female voices that just try to calm me down].... but then they came out with 0.0005" increments, and...

    53 V Max in 12tw. 223, Anybody?

With a 22 rimfire barrel [1 in 16" twist] reamed out to .223, the 52 gr bullets seemed to stabilize, but no 55 gr did. Obviously some 52 gr bullets are longer than others, but this means a 1 in 12" barrel 223 should be able to stabilize some 53 gr bullets.
