“Top 10 Things I Learned on Snipers Hide in 2019" (2nd annual)

This site:
We all suffered losses this year and leaned on each other.

Our pets are our families, I lost mine this year and I leaned on you, and got support.

This year was shit, worse for some, BUT we got through it. I think most of us have a never quit attitude, our fortitude gets us through shit.

We are a “Band Of Brothers” we bitch, argue and disagree, but I feel if shit was to hit the fan the majority of us would stand up.

I hope the wrong in 2020 will be right in 2021. This year has made me stronger, not weaker as some are. Bless all of you, you families, friends and our country.

After being gone for a little while, I realized that some aspects of this game are always changing, while others always remain the same.

I missed a lot of the conversations from some really brilliant people on here.

I’ll never be as good or knowledgeable as many of the people on this forum, and I’m good with that, and appreciate those willing to share.

The tinfoil has gotten thick and abundant in the pit.

Being on this forum for 15 years, every year I realize I need to read and shoot more, and post opinions less.

Ive probably learned more about life and being a man, from some of the people on this forum, than I ever did from the actual men in my life.

Chasing better gear to improve shooting, just leave 90% of us with less money. Time doing and proper experience > than gear.

Now that my kids are finally getting to the age where they can shoot, my love and passion for shooting has been reignited.

I never realized my kids would shoot soooo much .22, soooo fast. When stocking up on ammo through the years, this was over-looked.

I look forward to retirement, so I can shoot more.

I found out this AM that my last remaining Brother died Friday.

Unfortunately (fortunately?) we both saw it coming, and had a great nearing-the-end conversation over Thanksgiving Day.

He was 83. He died of Agent Orange induced Heart and Lung issues, FT McLellan. VA was forced not to do anything for him because the enabling legislation for A/O Poisoned Veterans of Ft McLennan has been sitting in committee in the Senate for going on a decade. God Damn Them.

RIP Robert E. Langelius, SP-4 US Army 1958-60.

Greg
My condolences. My brother passed away earlier this year from cancer caused by Agent Orange. VA wouldn't do anything about it until it was too late. He suffered the indignity of having half his face removed. But the cancer had spread too far by then.

ok, more serious answer. here is that i learned this year on the hide.
i wish i was rich.
i wish there was a long distance range closer to me.
some people didn't stockpile ammo for every firearm they own (much easier when it is only 4 calibers).
i might have to change my mind about only owning one centerfire semi-auto rifle. but that was my excuse for buying a semi-expensive one.
buy once cry once. 2 spotters, 2 bipods, 1 tripod.

because of SH, I'm learning about Tails and TOR (fairly easy to setup), using PassPhrases instead of passwords, and KeePassX (for storing passwords for places like this site, etc).
I also learned that since I bought my first AI's most of my older rifle collection is getting dustier and was largely wasteful spending.

theLBC, I go along with all of your points except the single semi-auto. I have a Garand, and had a Yugo SKS (which I just donated to the local VFW/Legion for a gun raffle). It was a 59/66a1 and had never been fired; saving it for some collector to buy, but the VFW needs the money more right now.

I like AR's, and have several;, 223. 6.5G and 308. What I''m learning is that for legal purposes, an Upper doesn't count as a gun, and how many guns can you shoot at once, anyway? If things go badly, I'll simply reduce my Lowers to the necessary minimum, pay the Class III fee for them, strip the others, turn in the stripped lowers, and have a nice stack of spare parts handy.

IMHO, they put on the jackboots and take that stuff, they'll find out just how pissed off the American Patriots can get, and we'll have guns again. And/Or I'll be dead.

Yes, they never have LR Ranges in the right places. But smaller targets in closer with a 22LR can be nearly as challenging, and teaches most of the same skills. IMHO, the key value to it is that it saves the more precious (now) C/F ammo. Handloading helps, too.

The Bear Pit will take a guy who posts too many nudie pics and vote him off the island because his antics give the "community" and the site the wrong image. I agree there are plenty of websites dedicated to chikin-choking; use them instead.

At the same time, the Bear Pit will discuss the Nashville bombing (and every other news story) and hypothesize air-strikes, directed energy weapons, govt cover-ups, Chinese involvement, and any other number of truly stupid shit ideas, all while embracing the conversation with seemingly no regard for the image it portrays for the gun community.

Greg when your ready to fly rc or sell some ar ftf hit me up As im just 2 blocks or so from you and fly rc from time to time. I even have an rc field out of town ,with a 200 yard range .

We probably have met, very likely at DG, the Hardware, Wild Willy's, TJ's, or the VFW (where I'm Adjutant). Right now VFW is closed (Covid) until January (maybe...)

I'd love to go flying with you, but I haven't flown RC since the 1960's. We were flying balsa/silkspan, and single channel with Galloping Ghost control systems. My last plane was a Mister E. My Elder Brothers crunched it while I was in 'Nam, I still understand how they work, and they're so much nicer now, too (and expensive). But I'll watch you fly, and maybe get the bug myself again, too.

These days I've gone full-retro; back to Stick and Tissue Rubber Power Free Flight, and not even all that recently. I've just gotten the (pine) lumber to build a (balsa models) model airplane construction bench and shelves in my garage shop, and am hoping to get that up and running by mid Spring. My planes weigh ounces, and fly completely free, including large indoor spaces like gyms. Wind, launch, wait five or ten minutes, rinse, replay.

My Brother Bob ran PAL Model Products a few years back, he bought up rights to plans and had replica O/T engines built to spec (in Russia, no less), I have a couple, still NIB. Mine are of replica Babe 'B's .020's. Perfect for small power free flight models (24-36" w/s). He also made kits for free flight, like the Blue Ridge Special.

Looking at getting into Coupe D'Hiver Free Flight contest flying. I design my own free flight model aircraft.

Selling AR's is something I'd like to do just slightly less than cutting my own throat. I build for myself, pretty much period. Besides, mine tend to be a bit unconventional (bag riders, right now). May be selling a stripped lower or two, maybe; right now they're part of complete guns. I also do simple (ergonomics) mods of (Savage) factory Heavy Barrel bolt guns.

200yd range, you say? THAT sounds outstanding. I usually shoot at the Pit or go on down to Douglas (as a member).
