Hey guys I'm looked to step up In the 22 game. I have a regular 10/22 right now. I was wanting to step up to a heavy barrel with a tactical stock. Mabe a Boyd's or something. Throw some better glass and overall upgrade. Would I be better off selling my 10/22 to a buddy for 200 and buying a heavy barrel 10/22 or what? Need some feedback. Thanks

In the 10/22 game most upgrades are mutually INclusive in that if you swap barrels you need a different stock unless you have better than average wood working skills.
You can then continue to run the stock trigger unit/parts but that will definitely affect the result of the barrel upgrade.
Glass of course is a whole wide world of options.
I'd start w/ a barrel & stock combo of some sort and save for the trigger bits while attempting to futz with it on my own to improve it. You may do a good enough job that you don't need/want the trigger upgrade. Or you may screw it so bad you HAVE to get one.
Optics.....well that's a whole new story.
I know guys with $1500 10/22's and guys with $500 10/22's, the all seem equally pleased but at different levels in the game. When you get around 1/2 MOA things start getting expensive to take it to 3/8's MOA.
Good ammo is also a huge factor & expense. I never thought I'd see the day that I would consider spending $7.50 for a 50rnd box of .22.

No I'd keep the basic and add on the tube and stock (we're talking 3 screws here). Then futz w/ the trigger and then choose some good optics. The key on the optics will be Extended Focus Range (EFR) as most high power scopes have HUGE parallax issues under 100 yards.
I'd also take a good long read over at Rimfirecentral.com as there is a wealth of knowledge there if you get past the tacticool and Gee-whiz stuff.

Most scopes below a couple $100 are "set it and forget it" scopes. They are not designed to be dialed a lot. A $300 scope out of the gate is a whole lot better than 4 or 5 $75 - $150 scopes that keep failing.
Nikon makes good reasonable entry level scopes FWIW, not sure on their focus range though.......

I have a lupy vxii on my 17hmr. Love it might go with one of those. Might go with a mildot not sure. If i were to put together a 10/22 what all parts do i need other than the stock, barrel, scope and rings and base so i can configure a price up.

In my opinion i would dump the 10/22 and get a bolt gun. Most will start out with the accuracy you will have to build to with a 10/22. And considering some of these rifles are cheaper than a stock 10/22 in the first place, then you spend less trying to make it shoot well. That you can just buy ammo and enjoy the rifle.
But i understand everyone has there own goals and likes. Heck there are guys throwing Marlins in airsoft shells for gods sake. I guess spending a grand on a 10/22 isn't so crazy. lol

I agree with what Doc has said. First should be a new barrel and stock combo as the barrel is where the greatest gain in accuracy will be found (or at least in my experience). I bought a TacSol 16" barrel and am able to get sub-moa performance out to 100yds with Wolf MT and SK standard plus. I dropped that barrel into a B&C Target/Varmint stock and it is amazing. It should also be noted I had to play with pressure pads between the stock and barrel.
I used that for a month or two before I got fed up and got a new trigger group (Hornet Custom). It's a good trigger with a crisp break and light pull which has definitely helped my shooting. For the price (<100 bucks) I don't think it can be beat, but I'm sure the Kidd triggers feel better. The only thing I don't like is it is in a plastic/polymer housing rather than metal. I've shot roughly 2k rounds with it with no failures or trouble whatsoever.
Glass wise I initially put a (relatively) cheaper 4x24 Hensoldt and that worked for a while. It was/is incredibly clear and really does impress me with how much detail I can see with it. However as Doc said, it doesn't have the features I want (variable mag, illum, better reticle, etc.) so I bought a PST 4-16x50 FFP and put it on a 20 MOA rail. I can not say enough good things about this scope. It's pricey considering but excellent for my uses (target shooting with the occasional anti-squirrel campaign).
All in all I spent about 500 dollars on the stock, barrel, and trigger and 750 on the scope to give me a pretty accurate semi-auto 22. The only things I would change is to get the best scope possible right off and also spend the extra cash for a threaded barrel as I now have the supressor itch.

Kidd trigger kit, not the whole assembley. $105 Groups shrunk by at least half. Best money I spent on mine.

Keep your current gun and go from there.
First things first, the factory trigger needs attention. I don't bother going any farther than a VQ target hammer and maybe an over travel screw but lots of guy's over at RFC are really liking the Hornet trigger groups priced at about $100. Sell your current trigger group for $40.
Next comes the barrel. You can spend a lot or a little. I like green mountain barrels, best "value" IMO.
After that the stock. Completely subjective. I like sporter stocks and am just as likely to hog out/modify the barrel channel and paint the factory hardwood as anything. Saw Sportsmans Warehouse had pillar bedded Butler Creek stocks marked down to $40 this last weekend. Don't know jack about them but they are synthetic bull barrel stocks and cheap. I cant comment on any of the Tapco or Archangle type stocks.
You can stop there or you can get some bolt work done or replace the entire bolt assembly fairly cheap (sub $75?). I've never gone that far myself.
Optics.....again very subjective. On a long range (comparatively speaking) rimfire build I'd be just fine with a 10x Mildot scope of reputable quality. Fixed objective set at 150 yards. No belss and whistles to fiddle with just crank a knob or adjust dope with the dots and learn from there. A combo short/long range gun a 3-9x mildot (again fixed objective) and on a short range "run and gun" build a holosight or a 1.5-4x.

I would agree with the first modification should be the trigger. IMHO that is a MUST HAVE. If your 10/22 is the newer version with the Plastic Trigger Housing then buy all means the KIDD Drop in Trigger Kit is about the best money spent dollar for dollar. I have installed two of these now on new 10/22's with the Plastic Trigger Housings. Both times the result was the same, a nice crisp trigger at 2 pounds 2 ounces.
I regards to the barrel I have one factory carbine barrel in which I shortened it to 17" (removing the front sight in the process) and added a Green Mountain Aero Shroud to give it the look of a bull barrel without the weight.This barrel shoots way better than a factory 10/22 barrel should. In fact This shortened factory carbine barrel shoots better than two of the 10/22T's at our club (factory 20" Hammer Forged Bull Barrels).

Another item to consider is sending the bolt to one of the places that do bolt work. Setting the headspace as well as pinning the firing pin are very worthwhile mods in my opinion. I also chamfer / radius the rear of the bolt but do that work myself.
The items listed above are minimum on any 10/22 I put together for myself or friends.

I went the budget route and am completely happy with it. I have an E.R. Shaw barrel and I took the factory stock and a router and made a channel for the barrel. I did a trigger job on it and it made a HUGE difference and it was really easy. And it only cost me about $150 on top of what I paid for the rifle. It shoots incredibly well and I have on several occasions out shot my friend who has about $600 in his 10/22. Its what got me into long range shooting to begin with. After hitting 8'' steel plates at about 400 yards (not very consistently) with it I had to buy something bigger. So needless to say I absolutely love my budget 10/22 and highly recommend the E.R. Shaw barrel for a budget build.

I did a few upgrades to my original stock rifle and I'm very happy with it. Not including optics I spent about $400 for a cheap Butler Creek bull barrel, Fajen Legacy stock and some Volquartsen action upgrades. I'm now just over 1MOA shooting Elay match rounds. I did some tinkering with the stock trigger to smooth the engagement points which seems to have helped, but I'd love to drop in a new trigger at some point. Bottom line, if you don't know how much you're going to use a more specialized weapon, you can't go wrong doing iterative upgrades on your 10/22.

I like my built up 77/22 the best but have built a couple 10/22's for my kids to shoot gofers(golfers). I use to use a lot of VQ parts but recently tried some KIDD parts which I really liked!!

I'm partial to the cheaper gun and taking the extra money savings on shooting time and ammo and other features like bases, scopes, rings, triggers, bipod ect...
I do have a buddy that has a base model 10/22 with a tapco stock, Nikon Monarch 3-9x40 and his gun will shoot 1in groups at 100yds with green tag ammo.
I really like the bolt action better bc I think it does more for your shooting skills bc you're not just point and shooting it actually requirs you to set up the next shot so I tend to be more accurate with them
