Hello, first off not sure if i should post this in gunsmithing or rimfire so before people get PO sorry. I want to convert my ruger 10/22 to 17 mach II but i see that there are some bolt conversion out there for like 220-250 dollars and i really dont want to put that into just a bolt. I also see where some people say just use the heavy bolt handle and action spring methods. I really have searched and cant find a definite "yup thats the way to do it" so i thought i would ask the experts. Thanks for any help.

Greetings fellow Michigander. You need a heavier handle and stiffer bolt spring. I think many use the 22 mag spring. There are several kits available for bolt handle/barrel combos. Just make sure you heavy up the bolt and spring. You do not want a kaboom! Check out rimfirecentral.com

You also need to replace the bolt stop with something a little more forgiving. I replaced my factory parts with a tungsten bolt and a new spring and polymer bolt stop but it never cycled reliably and after seeing some cracked receivers, I went back to .22lr and stuck with my bolt .17hmr.

I have built ...and blew up a few... The combo that worked out the easiest is a Ruger 16.5" 77 barrel, from Green Mtn. and a Rimfire Tecnologies spacer to take up the extra barrel space. A Rimfire Tec. MID-weight bolt handle, with the progressive spring. And I used a magnum trigger return spring,Ruger or Wolf. I polish the chamber. I use Moly-fusion in the barrel. Use the shortest barrel possible. The chamber must be kept CLEAN.I have used tungsten weighted bolts as well with good sucess.A poly bolt buffer is also in order.Uses the same 10/22 mag, suggest a new one. Wicked pressure spike on these little dudes...Like baby centerfire. p.s. Ely ammo runs 150-200fps.faster than Hornady, not always a good thing.. Also don't use the older ammo....all brands had problems...Rimfire Central has a section on 17hm2.If you have the $'s Voltquartsen is a good way to go...

Re: 10/22 to 17 mach II?

A lot of the aftermarket bolt knobs claiming to be heavy enough are not. If you could get a custom one made extra heavy that would be best. Also, there has been a strong correlation between a dirty 17 mach2 barrel and Kabooms. Definitely keep that chamber clean like thickstrings said if you go through with this. I know the idea of the semi auto 17 sounds awesome, but it really would be less of a headache and safer to just go get a Tikka bolt gun or find one of the Savage MKII's in the cartridge.

Re: 10/22 to 17 mach II?

Hmm. Guess I just got lucky or just dont have enough rounds through mine to have caused an issue. I have a Green Mountian 17" barrel with a RimFire Tec bolt handle assembly and thats it. It pretty well single holes every time at 50 with Hornady 17gr but at 100 even the smallest wind opens the horizontal up a lot.
