What is most common yardage for a zero. I have heard that if you zero at a hundred you loose some of your elevation adjustments.

I zero for 2" high at 100yds, dead on at 200yds, and 6" low at 300yds. But that is how I was trained, it would really depend on your utility and what your shooting.

I am ordering a 308 in the next week or so. Waiting on the final price quotes on a couple models. Narrowed down to a Savage 10FP or a Rem 700 SPS varmit. I am trying to get as educated as possible in the meantime.

Unless you are running a USO with EREK it won't matter.
The only difference betweel a 100 yard zero at 1000 yards and a 200 yard zero at 1000 yards is where the outer knob is sitting. The actual erector assembly is in the same place thus travel is the same.
I suggest you zero at 100. If you are in a situation where you think a 200 will give you a better "point blank" range, then just dial the turret to 200.

I would suggest a 100 yard zero also. Reason being is no matter what you need to dial for range whether closer than 100 or farther will be dialing up elevation. No need to go below the zero mark and possibly get confused and lost on the dial. All my scopes are zeroed at 100 yards.

depends what you are doing. Hunting I zero at 200. just shooting where I have time to adjust my scope I usually go 100.

I zero all my 308s at 100yrds. Its the way to go in my opinion. You can always change it later if you feel its needed. Don't worry about losing elevation because of a 100yrd zero.

zero at 260, gives point blank range for quick shots out to somewhere around 300 yards with no ajustment and allows mil holds for my load out to 725, again with no ajustments. hold one dot low for 50-150yards precise. you can always dial dope in if you have the time and when you do youll need less come up.

Keep things simple, zero everything at 100 yards. If you want to go hunting and want a 200 yard zero then dial up from 100 yards what you need and leave it there while hunting. If you want to go with a max point blank range dial it in from the 100 yard zero.
If you are using several different rifle setups it's easy to forget what you actually zeroed the gun in at.

I zero at 100 yards for hunting. Obviously I then shoot 50 and 200 yards to see where impacts are just so I know. Also take into account that in nothern WI where I hunt, it would be rare to be presented with a shot over 100 yards. That's just due to the terrain in the area. When I get the chance, my 7mm RemMag will get a 200 yard zero just in case I get the opportunity to head out west.

I Zero at 275 for similar reason that Marduk mentioned while hunting. If I am killing paper I zero at 100.

Rimfires zeroed @ 50 yds. Centerfires @ 100 yds. I use the turrets on both, as well as mapping the mildots/hashes for all comeups. I have standardized all my scopes to Mil based reticles. So I can either dial, or use the correct dot/hash for faster shots.

I zero my police sniper rifle at 100 yds, since the national average sniper shot is 50 yds. My 325 WSM on the other hand is my hunting rifle and that is zero at 200. I have a 338 Lapua that I have zero at 600 yds.
