Quick question for those shooting 155’s I am currently shooting 175’s out of this little guy with good results. I am shooting suppressed. I have my subsonic loads already and am good there. Just wondering if plinking at the range I should be loading 155’s instead? My range is out to 1250y. I have other .308’s I shoot at distance but we all like to have a more challenging time. Anyway, From any experienced .308 Short barreled bolt gun guys is the 155 going to gain me anything? If you don’t know the real answer please don’t guess as I am looking for real world experience. Thanks folks!!!

In my 19" barrel I am shooting the berger fullbore 155.5
Im only running it 2750ish but can run it 2840ish without any drama.
At the 2750ish node its proven superbly consistent out to 1120yds. ( farthest Ive shot it )
    Bullet transitions VERY GOOD!!
Gotta be on top of the wind though......
    Yesterday @ 1012yds. , wind from 10 o'clock @ 5mph I was holding 1.4mil
basically 10" per mile an hour... bajeezras
    Hope this helps

i have a 18in 308 which never gets used without a can. gun really likes the 155 amax but havent had those in a while. shot alot of the 155 sierra palma bullets which fly really well. max distance was 1000y. big difference going from 800 to 1k with the wind. ran varget mostly, just started with some 4064. got a little more speed with it but havent tried in cold temps. shot alot of 168 fgmm that didnt really work past 800. also used 178 hornady hpbt but 155 was my favorite. Dont think the 155 will gain anything, but it wont lose anything either.

I don’t know if I qualify as “experienced” but first off, that rifle is hot. I’ve shot with 175 SMKs and 155 Scenars from an 18.5. I never spent time trying to shoot to 1000 but in the 600yd range I felt the 155s did a bit better from that particular barrel. Had a frustrating day once with 175SMKs on a mildly windy day and really didn’t look back after running the Scenars. It also didn’t shoot 175FGMM worth a shit.

If you do some digging there are old tales where people speak of using powders like CFE223 and 2000MR to get ridiculously high speeds from their 308s.

Are you serious? “Please don’t guess…know the real answer” lol.

No one but you will be able discover the “real world answer”. Go develop loads with 155g bullets and test those loads in your rifle. Post the results and let us know if you think it’s worth making the switch to 155s or not.

I whole heartily agree with the statement. And I do plan on this once I get my 155's. I am just asking those that have the experience ya know. So in other words, your comment is of no help to me but thanks for taking the time to post.

Nor was it intended to. Anyone else responding is just going to be guessing (which is what you specifically didnt want, lol) as to whether their “real world” experiences, including mine, are going to be helpful/relevant for you as you:

    1) Have not defined what success means for you so no one knows what the hell you’re looking to “gain” (maybe things like “flatter trajectory, less wind drift, less recoil, cost savings, more kinetic energy vs your existing ammunition) and /or why (are you assuming we can read your mind?)

    2) Dont seem to realize every rifle is different, you wont know if its worth the switch until you actually do the work and see for yourself

    3) Come off like a lazy, entirled prick who wants all the answers without putting any time or effort on his own; I’m specifically referring to your second to last sentence in post #1

    4) Not defined what “real world experience” others should have before replying (maybe you’re just referring to “plinking” as you call it or maybe duty use, competition etc)? Who knows…you dont say

If the purpose is just mindless “plinking” find 147-149 or 150 fmj bt bullets as they are cheap and save your good 155s for when you do more serious training and/or enter comps assuming that’s within the scope of how you use that rifle.

I agree with 100% of what you are saying just as I stated before.
Fair enough. To put your mind at ease, any modern 155 .308 projectile will beat the snot out of the 175 in drop and drift and are a great choice for shorty 308s like yours. 600 yards will get boring, you will find yourself pushing out to 1000 before long.
