I used to have a 17 remington. 223 parent case. 4000 FPS at mussel or so. It was stolen. Years ago now. I still have a small amount of ammo for it. Does any one have an opinion on this type of rifle? thinking Of getting another one. Thank you for any thoughts.

best answer would be to buy a Howa in .223 and rebarrel it for .17
They have both a mini-action and a regular short action.
It really depends. Is this something you would actually use?
There are a couple of companies doing the savage treatment for Howa (barrel nut).
Nothing will be cheap as it doesn't appear to be a factory option anywhere.

I like a sexy 4,000 fps laser as much as the next guy. Would the 17Rem be considered overbore?
I'd consider it overbore. Maybe there's a more precise definition I'm not aware of, but I have no problem calling it so. They also build up copper really quickly, so you'll be cleaning with a CU remover quite often. Barrel life is around 800-1250 from what I've read.

Really fun round though. I have a 70's Rem 700 BDL that was passed down to me that I really need to get out more often and finally dial in a load for. Also will be interesting to see what my chrono says the 20 gr vmax are going.

What grain bullet do you recommend for this?
I've always used the Hornady 25 grain HP - haven't used the 20 or 25 grain Vmax's yet. If I remember correctly - my velocity was 3875-ish - it was more accurate at this velocity than the 4000 fps level. My barrel is a 22" if I recall correctly.

My barrel doesn't have a too big an issue with copper fouling - powder fouling seems to be a bigger PITA. Supposedly, the CFE223 powder ( which reduces copper fouling ) is the current way to fly in the .17 Rem.

Looks like I have a little research to do. I used the heck out of it before it was stolen. I’m currently using a rem700 .223 28 inch bull, thing is cumbersome. Like to wack about 10 inches off of the barrel. I guess I could rebarrel that. spending too much is going to be an issue.

I personally like the smaller 17 Ackley hornet way better than the 17 rem. in the 17 Ackley hornet you can push a 20 gr v max to 3800 with way less powder and noise and the barrel life is way better. the bc of 17 cal bullets sucks so if you want a higher velocity flatter shooting options look at the 20 practical. 20 call bullets have quite a bit better bc and still can be pushed fast out of a 223 case.

McGowen will do a 17 remington barrel.
They also do a 'Howage" barrel nut system.
You're looking at around 425 + for just the barrel.
You could get one for your current Rem action, they also do barrel nuts for remington.
I checked Criterion, they offer a howa barrel nut but they do NOT offer 17 caliber barrels.

Never had a 17 Rem, but a 17 hornet is loads of fun and really good on fur. Killed quite a few coyotes, coons, bobcat, and a truckload of prairie dogs with the hornet.
