178 Amax and 300 WM

Has anyone pushed the 178 Amax from there 300 win mags? If so what were your results I have 800 at home I bought for my AI but we it being a 12 twist I'm unsure the 308 will stabilize them.

A 1:12 WILL stabilize them. But I had really good luck with IMR 4350. It's been so long ago that I can't remember the charge weight. I'm headed to the camp in a bit. I think I've got all the old data there. I will post back if I find it

With Imr 4350, something around 70-72gns should be about right for about 3100fps from a 26"bbl

I should made my first post more clear, my AI is chambered in a 308, originally the 178 amax was bought for that rifle but the stability factor looks to be marginal. So I figured I'd give them a try in my 300 WM and see how well they shoot from it.

I tried them in my 300wm, they were great with 4831sc. However I thought I should be shooting something larger, so moved to the 208-210 range.

Got a 300wsm and the 178 is all I shoot in it. It really likes them.

Both my 300wm and 300wsm are 1 in 10, but I would not worry about the 1 in 12.

The 178 AMAX will work in that 12 twist .308 just fine. They will also work in the 300WM with the powders mentioned.

300WM with 72.0gr IMR4831 shot pretty well for me.

The H powders will work just fine and I prefer them as they are more temp insensitive. Just look on Hodgdon's reloading portion on their site for data for the H powders but they all have IMR and Winchester powder data as well.

I found my load for my old 700 Police with the 178 amax. It was 70.0 IMR 4350. 3.590" coal, 3100 fps. If I remember correctly it was a tad on the hotter side so just giving you a heads up. Btw... Winchester brass

My load was with 180gn Sierra GK's and 71.0 of Imr 4350. The SGk has a smaller bearing surface, if I recall, and thus can run a slightly larger charge. Ymmv

I shoot 178 amax out of a 1:12 and they are great out to as far as I can find to shoot, 1080 yards at the in-laws farm.
