I'd like to shoot as far as possible with this setup. I realize this is a far from ideal 1000 yard setup but it would be great to be able to get there. Consistent @ 750 would really be nice.

What do you think is a good bullet for this particular barrel length and twist? The 155 scenar is an all-star but I really don't want to pay for them, ha.

That's a great price, but I'd try a few first before buying 1000. Your barrel's shorter than average, so it might take a faster twist with the slower speed to stabilize a 175 grain bullet. It might work, but you don't want to be out the price of a faster twist barrel if it doesn't.

It should be to 1k, it will be to 700 but in that case buying them local normal would be cheaper to get a small taste. There’s 13.95 shipping on sps so it takes bulk to make the price point. However you can sell the remainder and really only lose shipping.

I would stay away from he 155’s in that short of a barrel. They really need to be pushed to at least 2900 to see similar ballistics that rival the heavies.

I started off the with a 17.5”” barrel Surgeon and had the same thought process. The 155’s were accurate but could only muster 2700 and it really handicapped it’s full BC. I started shooting the 178 bthp’s from Hornady that averaged a .524 BC for me. Pushed them around 2570fps and routinely shot out to around 700 and would make the occasional hit at 1080.

I would suggest the new 168 ELD with its Doppler verified BC of 523 and try to get 2600+ out of them. Should be a decent round if you can get the velocity. If that doesn’t work I would move to the 178 ELD

Thanks! Looks like the 168 eld's will still be supersonic at 1k if I can get them to 2600 which should be totally doable.

I have the same twist but with a 24" barrel. My gun really likes sierras 168 gr Matchkings....but it shoots 168 gr hornady bthp's almost as good (everything is under 1 moa) so I tend to go hornady as they are cheaper. I haven't found a load that works better in the 170's yesterday with my particular barrel

I have a 20" 700 5R and it loves the 168 SMK, it's consistently putting out 1/2 MOA groups. It runs 2668 fps with 43.3 of Varget in LC LR brass. That should take you to 750 with a little room to spare.

178 BTHP would work great in that rifle. I shoot them in my 20" 11 twist .308 and they hammer at 1000. I get them at 2695fps with Varget. The 168 or 178 ELD would work too. I would not run a 168 SMK. Low BC and horrible transonic performance.
