Okay guys, I know this is probably like asking what is the lesser of two evils here, but I need advice! I desperately need some form of illumination or NV just for coyotes and such around the farm. Out to 100 yd would be nice, or farther. If I could afford a gen 3 I would go for it, but I can only do around 5-600 right now. Does 1st gen work okay? Been looking at the atn 350/390/410. Do these laser genetics illuminators work? I would prefer not to scare them off, is NV better? One more thing, I would LOVE not to have to change my optics every time I need NV. Are there cheaper versions of the ATN PS 22? Lots of questions I know, any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys (and gals)!

If you really want to try Gen1, you will need to either spend $200 on a decent illuminator ( eg, ELR-V ) which will just get you 100m, or you will need to go Gen2/3.

If your certain about Gen1, try a secondhand unit off ebay for less than $100 first and see if it really meets your needs, or resell it and start saving. It's a far less expensive mistake to make that way.

As for Laser Genetics? You can get a very good green LED flashlight from Ebay for about $20... Same thing, without the fancy name. You can even get a rifle-mount kit.

Finally, if you want a cheap add-on, rear-mounted is usually the cheapest... Works OK - Will need Gen2 or higher.

Regards
David.

Re: 1st gen or laser genetics?

cj7hawk, thanks for your reply. I figured thats about all the laser genetics was, as I have never used one. I would prefer good gen 3 night/day NV, but I cant find anything for under 1800, a little steep for me. Any particular brand/model recommended for under 1000 bucks? If not, I will have to take cj7hawks advice and just get a good ir illuminator and gen 1

Re: 1st gen or laser genetics?

I have a ND3 and it will illuminate out to about 100'! It is close to worthless. Yes, even with a new battery. If that is good as it get's with these, they are a rip-off!

Had a ND 3 and was a POS! Sent it back several times and took a month and a half each time to get back. 1 problem it would shut off each time I fired a round, sent it back to them and when I got it back then it stayed on but when you put it in the mount and started to tighten it it would shut off. Off it went again, got it back same problem. Not to mention it didn't work when it got cold.

Re: 1st gen or laser genetics?

I have wanted to try out a Laser Genetics for awhile but after seeing them being listed in the natchez flyer as being BSA and hearing the problems I'll pass. For that price you can get a really mean spot light or surefire.

With my limited NV experience it seems just like everything else shooting related in that the cheap stuff is junk. Unfortunately the good stuff is REALLY expensive. My solution is moonlight and illuminated reticle, or a really powerful light. One day I'll have a PVS-22 but probably not any time soon and until then I'm not going to waste my money on junk.

Re: 1st gen or laser genetics?

Laser Genetics(BSA) really are lasers and they really do suck, bad. I got to play with a prototype of the ND-5, it rocked was everything you thought it should be. Somewhere between prototype and production they went to shit. I got mine on a super media discount, sent it back with a scathing review. They have a new generation out, not sure how they work. Boy, I wish I could have kept that prototype.
