Made it out to the range this morning to sight in and break in the barrel. I was/am on no sleep and far more beer in me than I care to admit.

This was my last 9 shots (100 yards) of the barrel break-in using the Howa windex method:

I was shooting 168 GMM. I left the range happy. It felt like the rifle would do this all day long. I love this rifle!

Howa Break-In Procedures and Ballistics Charts

BREAK-IN PROCEDURE FOR GUN BARRELS USING JACKETED BULLETS

For the first ten shots we recommend using jacketed bullets with a nitro powder load (Most Factory Ammo). Clean the oil out of the barrel before each shot using a simple window cleaner (like Windex®) which will soak the oil out of the pores. After firing each cartridge, use a good copper cleaner (one with ammonia) to remove the copper fouling from the barrel. We do not recommend anything with an abrasive in it since you are trying to seal the barrel, not keep it agitated.

After cleaning with bore cleaner, clean again with window cleaner after each shot. Use window cleaner because many bore cleaners use a petroleum base which you want to remove before firing the next shot. This will keep the carbon from building up in the barrel (oil left in the pores, when burned, turns to carbon).

To keep the temperature cool in the barrel, wait at least 5 minutes between break-in shots. The barrel must remain cool during the break-in procedure. If the barrel is allowed to heat up during the break-in, it will destroy the steel’s ability to develop a home registration point, or memory. It will have a tendency to make the barrel “walk” when it heats up in the future. We have all seen barrels that, as they heat up, start to shoot high and then “walk” to the right. This was caused by improperly breaking in the barrel (generally by sitting at a bench rest and shooting 20 rounds in 5 minutes or so). If you take a little time in the beginning and do it right, you will be much more pleased with the barrel in the future.

Look into the end of the barrel after firing a shot, and you will see a light copper-colored wash in the barrel. Remove this before firing the next shot. Somewhere during the procedure, around shot 6 or 7, it will be obvious that the copper color is no longer appearing in the barrel. Continue the window cleaner and bore cleaner applications through shot 10.

Following the initial ten shots, you then may shoot 2 rounds, cleaning between each pair of shots, for the next 10 shots. This is simply insuring that the burnishing process has been completed. In theory, you are closing the pores of the barrel metal that have been opened and exposed through the cutting and hand lapping procedures.

This is the first time I've used a "break-in" method on a new weapon. As much money and effort as I put into this, I figured it couldn't hurt....Either way, I was going to shoot and sight-in this morning regardless. All it cost me was some cleaning time between shots...

Thanks! Despite the circumstances, the TRG put it in EZ mode (hard to describe). Realizing the "group" isn't stellar by any means, it did however give me a glimpse of what the rifle is capable of. I should have the brake on by next weekend, I'm curious to know what difference it will make..

Re: 1st range report for new TRG22

Nice rifle! I agree the TRG 22 is very easy to shoot well and as your group demonstrates, it is very consistent.

I have my TRG in 260 Rem flavor. I shot just under a 2 inch, 3 shot group on the head of my steel 25"x15" target last weekend at 672 yards in variable 5mph winds! The wind was holding so put the 3 rounds downrange in about 15 seconds, then it changed direction again.

Shooting my AR now is somewhat frustrating because I have been spoiled with the consistency of the TRG.

Congrats!

I didn't take pics of the rifle on the bench (I was too drunk and obsessed with my barrel break in routine). She's now at a 200 yard zero and I plan on shooting most weekends to prep for hunting season (pics to follow). I can take pictures now :), but they wont be action pics..If you're asking to see more pics of the rifle, I would be happy to oblige..

The Atlas is well worth it. I have shot the GG&G and like the Atlas better, and I can shoot better off the atlas than a bag.

Thoughts yes, get a Sako. I never could understand dropping big $ on a great rifle and optics and not stepping up to the superior factory design. I have Harris's and Atlas tried on TRG just to see, no contest.

I have seen pictures of others who have an Atlas on their TRG's. Does anyone know how they mount them?

you could put the bottom picatinny rail on it and mount to that.
