Hunting & Fishing 2013 Montana Elk

Had another great year elk hunting! First I filled my B-tag (antlerless) with a good cow. Then my wife shot a nice 6x6, which makes her two for two for 6-points the last two years. Not only that, she’s 7 months pregnant with our first child (a boy) in the photo! Then I got a nice 7x7 the next morning! I put a tape on them and hers grossed 267 3/8" and mine grossed 352 3/8”.

Nice Elk for sure, and it looks good in the back of the Toyota. Since I've gone elkless for a NUMBER of years, I would be happy to head east from Spokane and meet you on one of the passes and free up some freezer space for you! Congratulations on the successful hunts!

I did have to buy another freezer. I have a 25, 14, and 7 ft^3 freezer running with another 7 ft^3 for hides. My shop looks like a grocery store freezer aisle.

What tag and what Area did u hunt? I have been trying to talk a few buddies to go up there and do the sportsman tag but one guy ruined it by saying the wolfs are making the Elk heard bad… I will for sure show him these pictures of the "horrible elk population" HAHA! GREAT Bull man!

And, congratulations on getting the family started. Some fatherly advice if I may, don't miss a minute with your kids you don't have to. Sometimes work takes you away, but don't let life's other distractions do that. I say that because my three grew up and it seemed like it sure wasn't twenty one years since we started. Whoosh...and they were out the door doing their own thing.

We had the 410 tag in the Missouri Rivers breaks. It's a draw only unit and VERY hard to draw (just over 1% chance I think for the 55 rifle tags they give out), we were blessed and drew without waiting for a decade or two like most that draw do. The elk population seems to be doing pretty well in certain areas, mostly east of the Rocky Mountain Front. The wolves have definitely had a huge impact in areas west of the front where the wolf population is much higher and more dense. There are still elk to be had in the mountains of south and west MT but it is a tough hunt and getting tougher.

It's next to non-existent for Northern Idaho where all the West Slope wolves came after decimating those herds. Fish and Game can say what they want but even nasty viruses didn't diminish herds as bad as when we know wolves moved this far over. Washington is now getting a taste of it.

I hear ya about N. Idaho. That's where I grew up. Hunting has sure changed there.

I was living in Boulder, MT (between Helena and Butte) when they released those wolves. They said it would only affect Yellowstone and the surrounding area. It had an almost immediate impact as far North as Boulder (100+ mi) within one year. The wolves they released ran out what was there as far as native wolves, killed half the coyote population in one year and made an immediate reduction in both elk and buffalo.
