2013 Steel City Precision Rifle Challenge - Birmingham, AL

Is this the comp that is scheduled for this Saturday the 14th? or is it a series? I contacted someone and was told I needed to qualify to shoot on range H (I think that is the 725yr range) . I will be there to observe if nothing else! I just moved about 3 minutes away so I'm looking to join BGTC as well. Looking forward to meeting some good local guys to shoot with!
A quick update on the match as I've received numerous messages regarding availability. As it stands right now, we've got room to accommodate about 15-20 more people. We're trying to pack as much shooting as we can into the day and we aren't going to over-register and risk things getting bogged down. Stages are shaping up nicely and I assure you it's going to be fun!
Jim has done a great job of keeping us up to date as to the sponsors. We've had many generous sponsors who've agreed to support the event. There will be several firearms, optics, suppressors, knives, and other nice stuff on the prize table to give away at the end of the day. Of particular note, Accurate Ordnance has agreed to build and donate a custom bolt action rifle to the prize table. The specs of the rifle are out of this world and the craftsmanship of Accurate Ordnance is second to none! More importantly (to me anyway.....) Dave and Mark will be at the match helping out, spotting hits etc. It doesn't get any better than that when it comes to sponsorship and match support! Thank you Accurate Ordnance!
Some folks who've already registered have requested to squad with people who haven't sent in their apps. If you plan to shoot, please don't wait to long to register!

Rock Creek Sendero contour barrel, chambered in .223 Rem with a 1:8 twist, 22" finish
Barrel threaded .5x28 with a knurled thread protector
Manners T4 stock in Midnight with a mini-chassis (skim bedded)
Two left side flush cups and a forward bipod stud
Barreled action coated in Cerakote's Blue Titanium
Timney thin shoe trigger set at 1# 15.4oz
Comes with one AI 10-round magazine.

There are a lot of good matches in this SE region. We've supported other matches usually with gift certificates for labor. We're in a pretty thin margin business and coming out of pocket for parts hits the wallet hard. But we've wanted to support local events more if possible. And when we heard David and Jim were hosting a match, we knew this was the right one to support in such a way.
I can't say enough good things about David. I've know him a long time and he has always been a true gentleman. Just a great personality full of life and excitement with never a negative word to say; always positive. I met Jim at the Mammoth Cave match a few years ago. For David to hang around someone and choose him as a shooting partner, well, that says a lot. The more I got to know Jim the more I came to respect him as well. Everyone stepping up to help this match is a testament to the character of these individuals. I am confident the match will be a great one.
We're excited to be part of this event and look forward to even more great events with these wonderful gentlemen.

These matches have are getting to the point of cost where I'm gonna stop shooting them. When u take into account the cost of the rifle, travel bullets ect then a 250 match fee and sometimes more for team this things gets expensive. I am excited to come down and shoot a 1 day match for 100 bucks. Fill it up with rounds and shoot daylight to dark and quit. My business is exploding and my days off are more expensive than they used to be so that just adds to the cost as well. With that being said a 1 day 100 $ match per month would be ideal for me. I like the idea.
I shot the 1st mammoth match for my 1st match ever I shot for 3 days and hit three targets in zero degree weather. David was in my squad as was as nice to me as he was to veterans he knew. I've also seen him answer a 1000 stupid questions from new guys that other people walked away from. So if he is involved with something I know he will do his best to have a good match. You guys are bettering yourself by getting involved with him for the prize table.

Hey folks, one quick thing, if you're interested, you're welcome to tent camp or bring a camper and spend Fri and/or Sat nights at the range. We don't have camper hook ups but there is a new, full bath house with showers and flush toilets as well as grills for cooking out. There are grocery stores close by to get food etc.
Even though its a one day match, I know some of you are driving a good distance to shoot. If you want to take advantage of this and avoid the expense of a hotel room, just let me know. No charge to camp at the range.

A quick announcement, the Saturday prior to the match (November 9th), we'll be having an open range/practice day at Steel City. The range fee will be $50 and all proceeds will be donated to Toys for Tots.
If you're local or don't have too far to drive, this will be an excellent opportunity to spend time getting familiar with the range and verify your dope if you need to. We'll have steel targets set up from 100-725 yards as well as paper at 100 to verify your zero. You'll have the opportunity to practice off of a variety of barricades and other shooting positions etc. Additionally, we'll have one of the smaller bays set up with targets (paper and steel) if you need to work with your pistol, practice your pistol/rifle transitions, or sort out gear.
The range will open at 9:00am and we'll leave it open through around 2:00pm. Refreshments will be available throughout the morning and lunch will be provided (menu TBD) as a part of the range fee.
If you'd like to attend, please let me know via either PM or e-mail so we'll have an idea of how many to expect. You don't have to be registered for the match to join the festivities.

The question was more like will there be stuff to knock over or will it be all paper or just hits that count kinda question.
David, what sort of transitions are we going to be doing from pistol to rifle, just at beginning/end of stages or throughout the stages?, slung?, clearing then onto a designated surface? Will we need to be carrying all of our gear during transitions?
There may be some falling plates used throughout the courses of fire. Shooting lighter pistol loads typical in 3 gun matches will work. Expect a combo of falling and hanging steel and paper targets.
Be prepared to ruck your gear from stage to stage, including your ammo for the day.
Also, be prepared to manage your gear throughout transitions/movements during the day.
For the pistol: if you start the stage with it, you will abandon a "safe" weapon into a dump bucket or other designated surface before moving on to your rifle.
You will not re-holster your pistol until you show a safe weapon to your r.o.
Shooters will need to carry their gear around the range as they move between stages and shooting areas. These will be short walks and there will be one or two opportunities to briefly re supply from your vehicles during the day. Once you reach a shooting area, you'll be able to ground your gear, then use whatever equipment is necessary to shoot the stage. Equipment needed to shoot the match will be minimal. Pistol/holster, rifle, ammo and maybe a sandbag. You won't need things like shooting sticks etc. A sling will be needed on your rifle for transport around the range and possibly to shoot a stage. If you don't need the sling to shoot a stage, you can remove it. You should be able to transport your gear pretty easily in a 3-day size assault pack.
As John said, transitioning between firearms during a stage will generally involve safely grounding the weapon you start with in a designated place then completing the stage with the other firearm. Course descriptions will be very clear as to the procedure for transitions and weapon grounding.
The stages will be fun and challenging. They will also be very straightforward with regard to weapon handling.
Yes, pistol targets will consist of a combination of paper targets, knock over steel (falling plates or pepper poppers) and hanging steel. Paper targets with the pistol are neutralized with two hits anywhere. RO's will confirm hits on hanging steel by calling "hit". Knock over steel must fall to score. It will be calibrated with light 9mm ammo.
Definitely no need to stress over pistol targets! Standard 9mm, 40 S&W, or 45 ACP ammo will work just fine. The key thing re the pistol is to have one that works reliably and that you are comfortable shooting and handling.
