Post up any pics you have from kills made with a 208 A Max. Please give approx velocity @ impact, & report of performance. Looking to use this in my 300WM for long range Mule Deer, Black bear, & Elk.

Brother in law's first elk. He killed it at 500 meters with my Surgeon .308 and one 208 Amax. Broke both shoulders and left a golf ball sized exit hole.

'06, 2700ish fps MV, 250ish yards, quartering to, shoulder shot no exit, freight trained as in the HOLY SHIT effect.

Shrapnel in the meat, a bit too much blood shot....otherwise very dead very fast.

    Re: 208 A Max Kills?

We found the bullet on the other side of the elk about an inch from the hide. The bullet did lose some weight on its way through. We have killed around 12 animals with the Amax, and the bullets work great. They do lose some weight, but have never come close to letting us down.

    Re: 208 A Max Kills?

Any more folks that have shot big game with this bullet? I don't really need pictures, but would like to hear a few more reports. Penetration/weight retention/DRT Thanks.

    Re: 208 A Max Kills?

Multiple deer shot over the last few years. 300wsm 22" barrel 2800 fps. All one shot drt. Most from 300-550, recovered one bullet, if I find it I will post a pic.

Oh yeah! I usually shoot my deer in the front should so I don't have to do any tracking. My corn feeder is 50 yards from the property line and I don't want to have to track a deer across that. With that being said, if I shoot them in the shoulder, the offside shoulder is wasted and the front is a little blood shot but usually recoverable.

However they do hit the dirt like a sack of potatoes!

    Nice waste of a turkey.

    Idiots are everywhere.........

    Re: 208 A Max Kills?

from what i've read the amax tends to blow up when hitting bone. while it does transfer tons of energy that way (the reason for moste of the drop-dead-right-on-the-spot experiences), it seems to not always produce an exit wound.

in my area, we prefer a bit stiffer/harder bullet to make sure you have an exit wound. for instance, to make sure you have a trail to follow with the dog.

some think ks from rws is too hard, other don't like the ballistic tip to 'explode', others thing that accubond just passes through but doesn't give off enough energy, others think that the hm damages way too much meat ... bullet selection is like a never ending story

    Really?

The breast meat is GONE on that bird, or at least only part of it remains as blood shot trashed burger laced with smashed guts........I'd be proud of that too.

Yeah, it's the topic, but that doesn't excuse the ignorance employed.

Betting heavy odds it was a "watch this" moment............

Morons who do that shit give the rest of us a bad name, ain't no "venting" about that, that's the simple fact of the matter.

You make out like it's somebody elses kill, now, with the strategic use of "he", convenient ploy likely, to save face, here.

And before you get all worked up over it being a blown up bird via a "rifle kill", I too live in VA and hunt 'em with a rifle routinely....wanna see a couple pics?

No where near the damage when you don't shoot 'em in the breast meat.......course I don't hand my beer off and shoot 'em with a 30 cal 208Amax either.

Just curious.....what'd they say when "he" went to check that turkey in?

plain and simple... stupid. want and waste at its finest. good job making the rest of us look bad.

    Re: 208 A Max Kills?

Im no internet bad ass. Ill be glad to discuss this with anyone here over the phone, or better yet in person. You are entitled to your own opinion. No hard feelings here. The use of "He" was not putting this off on someone else. "He" being the bird himself. I was alone on this particular day. I was happy to get him, as well as being proud of the shot. I've nothing to prove here. Just sharing this particular experience. Good or bad..lets move on and stay on topic. I aplologize the the OP and anyone offended.

    O.P.,

My apologies for going off post, but I've got to chime in. WTF, it's a turkey. For such a bunch of supersniper badasses, there are a bunch of kum by ya piousness on here.

Why do you bunch have to get so nasty over a bird? It might not be what you would do, but why are you guys trying to bust Colt's balls? Are you guys hugging bunnies inbetween kills now? Relax and turn the intensity knob down a few clicks.

    Cheers,
    Breeze

    Re: 208 A Max Kills?

a guy can get on here a talk about the 50 pigs he killed and let lay and he will be regarded as a hero. if a group of turkeys gets on a wheat field early they will scratch around for days and do considerable damage. one average hog has MANY times the food value a turkey does. if i got on here and told of the turkey i shot with my bow and couldnt recover i would be consoled and told that it happens to everyone. ill bet that those who scolded colt for shooting the bird waste far more meat on EVERY SINGLE DEER they process than the entire carcass of that bird. i say, HELL OF A NICE SHOT COLT. dont let the hypocrits get under your skin.

You'd lose that bet friend, here.....only fat, bone, sinew, and hides go in the bait pile, and that's not technically wasting anything to a sheep/cattle farmer who kills coyotes out of pure spite and vengeful hatred.

50 pounds of just scraped bone trimmin' scrap turned into breakfast sausage, damn good breakfast sausage, Legg's Old Plantation style.

Sorry, don't have any pics of the canned goods, but we can a lot of venison too.....

Never even seen 50 wild pigs, let alone kill 50 of 'em, but I have killed exactly one hog, and he sure as hell didn't lay around to rot....went too far and paid too much to get him, not to enjoy every damn scrap.

    HPIM2727.jpg

    Neither did my kid's......

    HPIM2723.jpg

And turkeys can be easily and cleanly killed with a rifle, here's two from a very good Spring.

Be careful where you sling that "hypocrite" word around........

Some folks got ethics, and some folks got morals. An ethical man knows it's wrong to cheat on his wife, a moral man would never do it. The dude made a great shot on that turkey, no doubtin' that at all, but it was a wasted turkey....plain and simple it's quite a few's opinion. Pick your poison, ethics or morals. Anyone who knows how a turkey is put together easily knows what that kind of damage leaves one to "eat". The effort woulda been far better reserved for such scurge as groundhogs and coyotes, considering what the former does to farm fields and the latter does to livestock. Getting their center mass blown to hell and left to lay is far too good for the likes of them dirty bastards.

Just figured I'd defend my take on things, now back to the regularly scheduled program............

Sure, here's three more 208 kills....

Passed the rifle around the shooting tower, everybody got a shot....it was a good evening for making meat.

    Re: 208 A Max Kills?

wow tripwire. give yourself a great big pat on the back. do you really think you are the rule and not the exception? i commend you for your efforts in taking your game from the field to the table. that does not negate the fact that MANY people who bashed colt are HYPOCRITS.

    Re: 208 A Max Kills?

Shot my bull at 791yds last fall with 208 AMAX at 2830FPS 300WM. It did'nt drop him but he never took a step, in about 10 seconds he laid down an died right there. Bullet never exited lung cavity but made jello out of his lungs. Better shoot them in the lungs, especially deer and smaller animals or your going to waste alot of meat, their quit expansive bullets. Would recomend them, and will use them again this fall!!!

    +1....

From the 10 point I posted in this thread, the recovered piece of jacket/bullet base and the bits of lead we could find, weighed a total of 84 grains.......that was a 200 yard hit, front shoulder, quartering to me.

He went down like the world fell on him.....same reaction/performance from the three in the truck picture.

    Re: 208 A Max Kills?

    It's actually Wanton-Waste, not Want-and-Waste. just sayin...

On the turkey, Though not the ideal way to take out a game animal, he did say he salvaged what he could of the meat. That is not Wanton Waste. WW would be leaving the animal in the field, or just taking the beard for a trophy etc.

    Nice shot though

    Re: 208 A Max Kills?

Here's a video from a few years ago. We were hunting from a ridge top and some does finally came out right before dark. The feeder in the background is exactly 300 yards, and she was at 280.

    208 A-max at about ~2900 fps from a TRG 42 in 300WM.

    Re: 208 A Max Kills?

The 208 grain AMAX is going to be very dependent on the velocity the bullet is going when it hits the game. It also depends on if it hits bone or soft tissue. Hitting bone at close distances going fast, there is a high probability the AMAX will blow up or come apart. I have seen deer, hogs, and coyotes all shot with the 208 AMAX out of different calibers at different distances. It really depends on the mission you are trying to achieve.

It is an excellent, maybe the best IMO, long range hunting bullet.

    Re: 208 A Max Kills?

17 days till GA open gun season. Pics to follow.

PS- Turkeys have caused me nothing but frustration and hangovers for two years straight. Seeing one inside out is a little satisfying...dunno about the method...but hey who am i to judge. good shot.

    Re: 208 A Max Kills?

It kills that is for sure.. However be weary of the bad shot! My friend made a high shot on a doe last season, it hit right where the front of the backstrap starts, and ran down the spine.. 3/4's of the backstrap on the entry side was toast, and 1/4 was liquefied on the back side. I took a doe at 415 yards 3 weeks ago. I hit right were I was aiming for a double lung, 2 inches behind the front shoulder.. It must have hit a rib because the deer was 100% broadside, and it turned right, and ripped out the back side getting into the guys.. Deer ran 100 yards, and I am shooting the 208's and 3000fps.. I was shocked. I shot a deer last week with 308win with 175grn amax.. Double lung, straight through, great blood, no damage, and a large exit. Deer also went almost 100 yards though.. and i did aim 3 inches from the shoulder perfectly broadside.. My two cents.. is high neck shots with ballistic tips!! Unless it is a triple bonded bullet of some sort..
