Anyone had good results with their 308 using the amax 208g bullet for 600-1k shooting, Was going to Load the Amax Molly with Lapua brass and either vit n550 or reloader 17 which should yield 2,550-2,600fps with my 1 in 11 24in Blaser LRS2 barrel, Anyone able to share some info with the 208g amax in 30cal thanks, paul.

Ya I have 2 unopenned boxes of these junk bullets, I can't figure out why anyone would shoot these. I found some awesome muzzle loader .308 lead balls that have a BC of an incredable .001, awesome load for everything from ground squirrels to high plains jack a lopes.

Ya I noticed they are hard to find, about as hard to find as 200gr nosler accubonds. If I could have found the same amount of accubonds as A-maxes I probably would have bought them instead. But instead got the 2 boxes of 208gr A-Max bullets.

208s are a bit on the heavy side for a 308, despite their great BC. The '06 and the .30 magnums are where they shine.

I'd be surprised if you can get 2550-2600 fps out of them without blowing out your brass in one shot.

155 Skinnies at 2950 are tough to be, out to 1k.

RL17 gets them into the mid 25's without much issue with normal barrel lengths. I like 'em in my 06 a lot @ 2875fps... not much on the hoof that will argue with that in this country.

Wow, you're really misinformed. I've shot upwards of 2600 from a short 20" barrel, and gotten quite a bit more than 1 reload from my brass. I'm not sure that I could get 2950 from 155's without tearing up brass.

Agreed. I was able to push the 208s up to 2705fps from my 24" .308.

When my '06 is done I will be giving them a try in it also with both RL17 and RL22 through a 28" tube.

Shooting 46.8 grns RL17, 208, lapua brass, CCI br2 primer out of a 20'' .308 in the low 25's. Brass is on 5th and 6th firing and doesn't look like it's going to wear out anytime soon. FL sized everytime.

Hear that. I have searched high & low for these and others at times - no dice. Other Hornady amax bullets also seem to wind up in short supply, with many widely unavailable for months at a time. These are great bullets, but only if you can actually buy them. I wish they would fix whatever the supply side of the issue is.

The leadership at Hornady was "appalled" to learn of the blasphemous use of the 208 in .308's and 30-'06's, acknowledging the superiority and rightful claim of the 300WM, the firearm they were actually developed for. To that end, engineers have developed the world's first "smart" bullet.

jrobb, You owe me a 67 degree Black Butte Porter. Most of it is now covering my keyboard.
A year ago I was talked in to buying a Rem 700 SPS 26" Bull in 308 to compete (friendly wagers) at 1000yds with a few friends here Phoenix. I thought I was doing alright with my scoped K31. Anyway I got it and added a Choate stock, Wotac 4x14x50, and Harris pod.
Loaded some Berger 168's for 600yds and 175's for 1000, conducted ladder tests at 500. Thanks for the info from this site. Found the node for my stick and came away happy.
Then read this tread concerning 208 A-Max's and was going to start the process all over again but was saved do the lack of said bullet. I did stumble on to some 200gr SMK's.
Sorry for the long winded intro. So my question is.....Any one work with 200's to 1000 and a bit beyond? I have RE-15 and 17 to play with.

I have a 300wm and they shoot awesome out of it. I can get them going about 3050fps and I have shot them out to a mile and I can keep under 1 moa out of them.

Thanks Gents. I've been following MM's load threads and I appreciate the info. I use RE-17 for the K31, 7.5x55 and I worked up some loads for a ladder and pressure testfor the Remmy. I'll post results and targets when it cools down a bit.

The one thing that concerns me about these bullets is if they are going to expand???
I put 3 of them through a 3/8ths steel plate at 400 yards. I had another steel target that I shot at 200 yards with 210 bergers and they barely dented it. So I may try going back to the bergers?????? I have never seen a bullet do this kind of damage.

I shot a buck this year (dressed out at 120lbs) at about 40 yards with a MV of 2600fps with the 208 amax, and it didn't blow up. If anything, it expanded nicely. I saw no evidence of significant fragmentation in the gut pile, nor around the exit hole. Any bullet pushed fast enough is going to 'blow up' when it hits a deer. At the velocities that I shoot, i'm sure it'll hold up just fine.

FWIW, I shot a milk jug full of water at 700 yards and the milk jug popped nicely indicating to me that there was expansion.

I got great speed with 208's out of a 26" PSS(308) ...I just couldnt get the 1-12 twist to settle them down..wouldnt group for anything

Even though I'm not using the load, the 208 is still supersonic at 1k with a MV of 2250fps. Now I've managed to get mine up to just shy of 2400 out of my 18" AR10 - work great!!!

Ya, that has to be a pretty old box of 300winnie brass. I've also been told Lapua themselves didn't make that 300win mag brass that they sub'ed it out to someone else. Read that on another site and it was posted by a Lapua Rep.

There is no way you can use that many 208's at one time. You better send me a box of those so nobody accuses you of being piggish about them.

The cases were sitting on the shelf of a very well known gun shop in the south of England, I was travelling on business and thought it would be rude not to stop by. Anyway saw them gathering dust next to some .338LM and snapped em up. It'll make you sick to know I got em for $70! (they were there that long they didn't have a price on them so they guessed at a figure!)

Doesn't look like the 208's have quite caught on yet in the UK so I've been able to get my hands on some fairly readily. Might be some time before the next batch appears tho....

mmmm.. been trying to work out what to do with these... 1100 of them... still got a good 800 odd 200SMK's to get through before I even crack these open for the 300WSM!!

I bought enough projectiles a while back to last the life of the barrel.... I hate not being able to find components when you need them!
