Am I crazy for wanting to do a 22-250 and run the 80ELD's?
really wanting to keep velocity around 3150 so I can shoot the occasional match/practice on steel and also keep barrel life a little longer.

Running them side side by side, an 80 ELD at 3150 is inline with my old 140 Amax 6.5 Creed load out to about 600, after that it's only about .1 miles behind to 900.

Im just really wanting a super lite recoiling gun without having to fireform, significantly better ballistics then 308 and decent barrel life. I'm assuming if I keep the loads around 3150 I might see 1500-2000 per barrel? Only assuming this because others have reported on average 800-1200 rounds per barrel running 3400 fps loads. I'd be happy if I get 1500 accurate rounds out of the barrel.

If anyone one has any match style rifles or loads post them up. If anyone has a better idea for me let's hear it.

** Importent question...Will the 80 ELD stabilize out of a 1-8 barrel at 3150? And if it will, will it affect BC? Does a 1-7.7 twist really make much of a difference between a 1-8?

I ran a 22-250 for a while with 80 grain Berger's in a 8"twist, it shot great at 3150. Only downside was only 6 rounds in a AICS mag. There is a bunch of body taper on a 22-250 and it does stupid things with more than 6 rounds in the mag.

I know you said you don't want to fire form but the 22-250ai lets you stack them in a mag like they were supposed to be there. No problems like the regular 22-250. If I was going to run with a speed limit I would run the 90s. Either Berger or sierra. I get 80 amax and vlds to stabilize out of a 8 and 7.7 at 223ai speeds so I would think the eld would work at 3150. I can't help with loads because my sons is a 1-9 and an 22-250ai. It shoots the 70s fast and accurate though.

Pusher you will have very similar drops even out of a 223. I run the 75A max at 3025fps to match my 6.5 out to 900yd, but of course the windage is 2X. Cheap, fun rig to shoot with excellent verticle out to 1000yd where it then deteriorates out further. For my Ftr rifle I shoot the 80.5 Berger which the 8 twist stabilizes fine.

I've got two 22 Creeds and shoot 82 grain Bergers at over 3400. I've used mostly 8 or 7.7 twist with no issue. Just chambered up a 7 twist 4 groove. I've noticed no difference.

You should be fine with the 8 in the 250.

Thanks but I guess I'll stick with 6.5 Creed. I realized the 22 Creed needs formed brass and I don't have hardly enough time to reload now as it is. To buy more dies and brass then have to form them as well has bummed me out. That's why I was looking at the 22-250 in the first place but I need to run them in AI mags so.....looks like I'm stuck. Really wanted this to work out though

Not sure what you need to do to form the 22 creed other than neck size but even a 22-250ai you just form them by shooting, which I assume you have time to do if you're looking at building one. Just load the virgin brass and don't load a mag full and shoot them. Then you have formed brass that you can load a mag to capacity with from then on.

Low recoil, better ballistics than 308, good barrel life, using traditional AICS mags, and no fireforming for a steel practice/occaisional match/fun gun? Why not a 6BR with the AICS mag kits? Not as flat of a trajectory as your initial 22-250 plan but pretty much matches it for wind drift. Lapua 6BR brass is not expensive and will last forever, barrel life is great (3k+) and minimal recoil. Dies are pretty reasonably priced, around $60-80 for a standard set from Redding or Forster.

Alternate might be a 6 Dasher with the Norma brass. No fireforming needed, just can't run it quite as hot as Lapua formed Dasher brass. Barrel life won't be as good as the 6BR but you'll get maybe another 100-150fps and better ballistics.

Thanks, I will start looking at this and trying to learn about it.

I had a 1:8 twist 22-250 put together for my grandfather, shooting 90gr Berger VLD's @ 3009fps (22" Rock Creek barrel). Stupid soft recoil (like watch paper impacts at 100yd), shot it out to 1400yd and the only problem is spotting misses in soft/wet ground. Great little hunting rifle. Also have a 50gr load worked up, 3730ish fps.

The thing hammers. Outstanding for coyotes and prairie dogs.
