22-250AI 9 twist with 75gr a-max??

Re: 22-250AI 9 twist with 75gr a-max??

I will pretty much guarentee it will be fine considering I am shooting them (75amax) out of my 1 in 9 twist 223 ackley just fine. I would say you might even be able to shoot the 80gr amax. however I also have a 22-250ai and it is in 1in 8 twist.

Not to get this thread too far off topic. Have you tried the Bergers in the same weight range? A-maxes seem very popular, what results are you getting(accuracy)? thx

Re: 22-250AI 9 twist with 75gr a-max??

I have not tried the bergers except for the 73gr bullets which shot great well under 1/2moa 5 shot groups. I actually used them for my fireforming loads with 36gr of H4350. they aren't screamers but they are very accurate. I am trying to focus on the amaxs because I am going to use it for p-dog shooting and they have much better expansion and are much cheaper than bergers, however I am thinking about trying the 90gr vlds just because of the crazy bc.

Re: 22-250AI 9 twist with 75gr a-max??

I would have went with the 1-8 twist but i got a good deal on a 1-9 shilen barrel. I couldnt pass it up!! The opinions seem to be 50-50. I guess i will just have to see. 1sickpupy, did your rifle keyhole the bulletsor did it just not shoot them very well? Lee

Re: 22-250AI 9 twist with 75gr a-max??

it would keyhole them past 350 yards. closer, they seemed to cut round holes, but lousy accuracy.

some guys have good sucess with 75s and 9 twist though, so it may work fine for you.

Re: 22-250AI 9 twist with 75gr a-max??

I am still testing the Amax's in my 1:9, but sofar I can see that they like to be very close to the lands. At .010 off they shot OK, at .020 off they opened up. Now I have some loaded .005. We will see.
YMMV, Rob

Re: 22-250AI 9 twist with 75gr a-max??

I'm running the 75 AMAX in a 22-250 Imp. with a 1-8" twist and have found they seem to like setting back off the lands between .005"-.008". I'm getting 3414 from a formed load and 3200 fire-forming with no signs of pressure from either load.
You push them hard enough and you should have no problems with a 1-9" twist.

Re: 22-250AI 9 twist with 75gr a-max??

Well i didnt get the shilen barrel i thought i was going to get, so now i am back to the drawing board. I am not even sure what chambering to go with now. Every one keeps telling me to go with a 22BR. All i know is that i want to be able to shoot the 75gr A-Max and 60gr v-max. anyone?? Lee

Re: 22-250AI 9 twist with 75gr a-max??

Hey Skeets
Take a step back and think about this question for a moment...

WHO you are building the rifle to please??? YOU or US (the faceless Internet gun fraternity)?

Don't get me wrong, I've absorbed tons of cerebral data on this site (and others) from soliciting opinions. But when it comes to building a custom rifle, I pretty much know what I want from it, hence the "custom" rifle...

Since you have your desired projectiles defined, ask yourself these questions:

What do I want to 'kill' (paper, steel, varmints, deer or combos thereof) ??

How fast do I want to shoot said bullets?

How heavy do I want my rig?

From what position will I normally be shooting it from?

What glass is going on top?

These are questions that only YOU can answer, since YOU are the end user and your satisfaction it what counts.

Once you have these questions answered, you will have a very good idea of:

caliber & twist
barrel length & contour
stock
optics & mounts

Then you can pose questions that will get you quality answers from the helpful & knowledgable members here, without them actually building your gun for you!

Unless that's what you want???

Re: 22-250AI 9 twist with 75gr a-max??

If your looking at options for a 22cal that shoots heavy pills you may want to consider a TTH or 22-6mm which ever you wish to call it. My dad rebarreled a M700 22-250 and it now is a TTH. I have shot 16 coyotes to date with that thing and it's a death ray. He hasn't had it very long and the only load he has worked up is 75 VLD's but they shoot awesome out of his 1-9 Lilja.

Re: 22-250AI 9 twist with 75gr a-max??

I really like the idea of a 22-250AI, but everyone keeps telling me to go with a 22BR. They claim better accuracy. Why is this? Is the 22-250ai not an accurate chambering? Lee
