22 Bolt Action

I am looking for a 22 LR for my son's first rifle. Does anyone make a quality bolt action?

I have an old winchester that was passed down from my dad to me, but it is getting a little too old for constant use.

I have looked around at a number of rifles, Henry, Rem, Marlin...

I am looking for someone who has one who can comment on quality. It would be nice if my son could pass this on to his son/daughter.

Marlin & CZ are good bolt action rifles. I like the Savage MKII F series line myself.

I agree with Kansas45, both Marlin & the CZ are good choices. The Savage with its Accu-Trigger is a big plus and they are accurate.

not sure what sort of $ your thinking about , i think a cz is about the least expensive that really has the lasting quality . if more $ are ok perhaps kimber , annie or cooper . my marlins , remingtons and savages have been decent , but not what i would want/expect to pass on to my children

Savage Mk II. It's a shooter out of the box.

I think a first rifle should be an adult sized rifle. If size is such an absolute issue, buy a second stock, youth sized; but the youth will grow and will be especially pleased to have a rilfe they can continue to use.

I think a first rifle should be very basic, and essentially generic. Improvements can come with a later rifle. I am especially partial to the Savage MKIIF and MKIIG. I think that a masterpiece is nice, but for a first rifle, the youth should not be worried with subjecting the rifle to reasonable wear and tear.

Kid should learn to use iron sights, and both of these have them. Optics come later, and dot scopes are particularly good for plinking and small game.

I learned with my Mom's Winchester Model 67A. My Dad never really was much into shooting, my Elder Brothers were my mentors.

I picked up a Henry Accu-Bolt for my son to learn on and have no complaints. The stock is short and the rifle is light and fits him well. The fiber optic sights are nice too. My two youngest will learn on the rifle after he grows out of it.

I have a crickett target model that never disappoints with accuracy. Technically a kids gun but im more than happy with it as a 6' tall adult.

im looking for a 22 for a youngster myself. i decided on the cz 452 scout. its small enough that he can be comfortable shooting it but its a quality rifle.

I purchased a set of CZ's for my son and I. No regrets, they are shooters, light, and nice bluing. This was prior to the Rem buyout.

+1 bought one of those for my son. Technically his 2nd rifle, a Cricket was his first. However the CZ blows the Cricket away in quality so it should last.

Highly reccoment the CZ then you can always restock it with a full sized stock later. You should go to a shop that has then all instock then handle them all.

interesting. i am thinking about a .22lr and have been leaning towards a mark ii, but I would obviously like something that will last generations; guess I need to up my purchase price and look at some CZ's...

I like the savage. Don't have a cz though.

I vote get the synthetic stocked savage with the accutrigger for him. Then he doesnt have to worry about dinging up the stock or whatever. I would think he would want something he could tote and shoot and just worry about his trigger work. AND then you could save the extra money and buy tons of ammunition.

I have probably 8000 rounds through my mark two (the one with the laminate stock, no thumb hole) and I couldnt be happier with it.

The marlin 981t isn't bad it's accurate with iron sights and you can mount a scope if you want but it's pretty long for a 22 jmo it's tube fed hold something like 17 rounds.

My favorite rimfire is the marlin 917v it's a heavy barrel 17hmr but it has nice proportions and drives tacks. it comes with a 4 round clip and a 7 round clip and sells for 249 at walmart. I beleive they make a 22 in the same style as well as a 22 mag. I haven't seen hi capacity magazines for it any where but you can get extra stock clips pretty easy. I modified mine, scuffed the wood and painted it flat black using a rattle can it came out awesome I let it cure for a week before I touched it. To date I have about 4 bricks of shells through it and I haven't chipped the paint job anywhere, pretty impresive for a rattle can. Great gun the 917v and it will make an impressive hole no doubt will drop medium sized game with appropriate shot placement. works great on coyotes. doesn't leave much on rabbits though really need to take head shots on them.

Savage comes with everything you need the MKII is a great choice. I have a MKII that after finding what it likes to eat (slow ammo is a go)gets groups at 50 yards in a 1/2" group. Great stock, great blue, nice crown, comes with mounts and the trigger is crisp.

Dicks has a MKII combo with a 3x9 bushnell for $159. Best 159 I have ever spent. I met a guy at the range a while back that asked the same question for the same reasons. I recommended this rifle to him. A month later I seen him and his son at the range and he thanked me several times. His boy was consistently hitting clay birds he put out on the embankment and having a blast doing it. It doesn't have the accutrigger but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It will not only be safer for a youngster but it will force him to use proper technique and focus on the basics. For that price you can't go wrong!
