any one own or shoot an AR in .222 Rem? I was told that the French govt. issued this caliber when I saw 1 in TX at a gunshow. Was thinking of a 22" bull bbl . 222 for an additional
varmint rig--all my early varmint rifles were Sako short actions and that was my favourite caliber. any facts or opinions welcomed

Re: .222 AR-15?

What would be the benefit in doing this? With the plentiful supply of 223 ammo and parts, I'm not sure why anyone would want to handicap the platform with something different yet so similar.

It is certainly possible to do with out much if any modification to make the gun function.

Re: .222 AR-15?

222 was a benchrest record-holder for some time--more nostalgia than anything else--I could make do with 2 varmint rifles but
have at least a dozen--love wildcats also and have owned most before they were factory rounds

Re: .222 AR-15?

I am aware of the history of the round and I have a few rifles chambered for it myself, but I'm still not seeing the practicality of having it in an AR platform.

But hey, variety is the spice of life.

Colt, at one time, made .222 Remington rifles/uppers. They can be had, but usually command a pretty penny when they do become available. There are other companies that still offer .222 uppers and complete rifles, including Accuracy Systems:

To each their own in terms of the practicality or cost-effectiveness of the .222 vs. the .223, but if you have to have one, I'd trust Accuracy Systems for a complete build or an upper. I have used their rifles/uppers in the past and their work is of good quality, reliability and accuracy.

YEAH-I still have all reloading gear and lots of brass--just wanted to see if anyone was running 1--my fav. AR cal. right
now is 204-- (and the 17 fireball in boltgun)--just thinking of
a hyper-accurate medium-range varmint round
