So I’m putting together a .223 trainer for my wife. It’s a Howa 1500 SA in .223 with a 20” 1:9 twist barrel, in a XLR Evolution chassis. The bolt stop mod has already been done, so loading the rounds long in an AICS mag isn’t going to be an issue.

I dug through the thread that was started a few days ago regarding the 1:8 twist match rifle. I would like to keep the match idea going, but know that I’m limited in which bullet weights can be stabilized in this barrel. This rifle will likely see the occasional short-mid range (300-600) F T/R match.

Lemme know what y’all have.

Thanks in advance.

9 twist, was a 20 inch for 1500 rounds, now 16 inch here that shoots lights out with 69smks or the equivalent Hornady offering. I'd say any bullet in that class will be great! I'm at 1000ft elevation, not screaming velocity.

I have a Remington SPS Tac with a 20" 1:9 barrel, and it shoots 75 gr. Hornady BTHP bullets as well as anything else (best is 7/8" at 300 yds). I run those on top of 23.0 gr. of TAC powder. I've tried factory Hornady 73 gr. ELD, and no bueno. Patterned more like a shotgun. Good luck!

What brass are you using? Just wondering. I’ve read that some use LC brass, although I’m not totally sure what to look out for when using it, outside of getting rid of the primer crimp.

You can buy new LC brass that doesn't have the primer crimp or buy 1x fired LC brass that has been sized, trimmed and swagged off of the px on here.
