I've got to ask.
Does anyone make a Bolt Action, 223 in a Long action? I know Savage did at one time.
Would a 223 in a long action make sense to allow longer bullet seating for the 75g, 80g or 88g bullets? This would be a training rifle.
I currently have a short action 223 spitting 75g VLDs at 3000 fps but its limited to the single feed by the short action. Can I find a Long action 223?

Before you all scream "224 Valkrie" at me:
I understand the 224 Valkyrie Does this in a short action... and the design was based on an AR15 platform, BUT, "224" does not answer my question. A 224 in a semi-auto platform is a great idea but I don't see the need in a bolt action 224 IF i can find a long action 223.

I have 223 brass, and powder and primer and dies and gauges and... and... and... Change is hard.

Not that Ive ever seen. Mags are a limiting consideration, you would need to find a long action mag thats capable of feeding the skinny 223 round. Might be possible bending some feed lips in on and building up the mag walls to keep them stacked in line, I dont know. Not something Ive ever run across to learn from before.

What are your current oals? Might be worth looking into the wyatts box mag that allows up to 2.85" if the accurate mag trimmed to allow 2.55 arent enough.

I have a .223 built on a Savage 112 long action, and a Tikka T3 lite in .223 as well. Like Spife said, it's the magazine that limits how long they can be, not the action itself.

I've got a Savage 110 that is a 223...I'm running CDI Sav 110/308 DBM and AICS-pattern 223 magazines.

With a 223 extended bolt baffle, bolt throw is 1/4" longer than a regular short action.

I would try to modify mags for a short action before even considering a long action. You can run 2.95" in a short action which should be more than enough for any 223 round.

Interesting that it’s both savages, I assume that’s because you could easily change the bolt head out?

Mine is an older Savage, I think I bought it in around '93-'94, IIRC that was the only action length offered by Savage then. About the only thing left on it that is factory is the action and the bolt now.

Most of you are right. It's the mag that limits the COL lenght. Good catch.
223 COL by the reloading books is 2.260. My 223 rounds with 75g Hornady elds are measuring 2.4575. I have only tried theses in an internal magazine which is always too short. Are aics/detachable mags longer?
These are set for a new model 12 Savage I use for varmint shooting. 1 in 9 twist. I was thinking I might convert this rifle to a detachable mag for a trainer rifle but I need a magazine that will work.

Yeah, above, 2.55 for the plastic aics but they can be spotty and I don’t think available anymore so I would recommend going to the accurate mag. As it comes it’s only 2.3 or so due to it being a 308 mag with a plastic insert but you can file the very top front lip of that insert and get the 2.55. And the wyatts is 2.85 However it’s a proprietary deal and you’re stuck with it.

Tikka T3 and T3x are all long action in .223. The T3x Varmint has a 1:8 twist barrel. If you replace the stock with a Tikka CTR stock, it will accept MDT magazines, and you have a reliable 10 round .223 with 2.5+” from the magazine.

I restocked mine and used CTR bottom metal. Works great, and is quite accurate with prepped LC brass, 80SMKs, CCI450, and 23.3gr 8208XBR.
