Hello Guys,

Getting ready to purchase a new barrel for the AR15, I need some wisdom / guidance / opinions please for the twist rate & bullet combo......

I think I've settled on a Proof Research 416R Stainless Steel Medium Contour barrel, 18" length, Rifle Length Gas System in 223 Wylde. I can get this barrel in a 1:8 or a 1:7 twist.

On hand, I have a bunch of 69 SMK bullets, a ton of Hornady 75 BTHP (I shoot in the 223 bolt gun), but would / could switch to a different bullet if need be (biased on availability). Maybe the Sierra 77gr MK or TMK? Not sure.....

My local range is limited to 100 yards, but I also shoot at Frontline Defense on the 1000 yard range.

So what are your guys opinions? 1:7 or 1:8 ? Any feedback on the barrel? These doesn't seem to be a bunch of barrel availability currently......

Thanks guys!

Jeff

I'd just go with the 1n7 and call it good. All I shoot in mine, is 62gr., up to 77gr. anyways.
1n8 is the good all round average twist. 1n9 if you go with 55gr. and smaller/lower grain stuff. Just throwing that one out there. Mac(y)
ETA: use to shoot 85gr. Barnes out of a 1n8, with an 18" bbl. Didn't group for crap. Maybe, if it would of been at least a 20"+ bbl, it would have grouped better, don't know. Soooo, 1n7 is my go-to with any bbl I might choose.

Guys, thanks for the info so far..... keep them coming......

Also any recommendations for other barrels that are actually in stock? I'd like to stick with an 18".

Do the 77 SMK perform better in a 1:7 vs a 1:8?

Hard to say which is better. My experience with White Oak 20” 1:7 in a match service rifle has been excellent. My personal best group at 500yds ( sling and irons) I would say either one will work for you.
