I have a 223AI bolt gun that I am about to start load work up. I am interested to see what powders are going to be best for me. I will be using winchester brass and cci 400 primers along with 75gr a max bullets. My oal is going to be 2.45 to the lands. I would like a temp stable powder. I have alliant AR-Comp on hand but I am not stuck on that single powder. Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: 223AI Powder

Varget and RL-15, Varget is one of the better temp stable powders for that round, you will get more fps from less RL-15 thou. Not sure how temp stable RL-15 is, haven't played with it much. Good luck!

Re: 223AI Powder

I have seen a lot of posts with the 75 Amax using RL-15 as well as H4895 and a few varget. Wish I could add more but I am still waiting on my barrel to arrive... I can say Varget and IMR 8208 work great in the standard chamber.

Re: 223AI Powder

I'm about to start doing the same.

I am planning to start with varget since I Have 16lbs of it... kindof praying that it works for this application haha.

I'll be using 80gr amax though.

Re: 223AI Powder

From my 22" 1:7 223AI barrel, using Nosler fireformed brass and CCI-450:

26.2gr Varget with 80gr A-Max @ 2.485" OAL is 2890fps
26.6gr Varget with 75gr A-Max @ 2.48" OAL is 2955fps

I plan on using 80s from my barrel and am thinking of trying RL15, 8208XBR and 2000MR to eek out a little extra velocity. My 80gr A-Max/2890fps load is very accurate but if I can sneak it up to 2950 it'd be even better...
