I took the 224 out to 765 today for the first time. I can get consistent hits at 610 no problem. That 156 yard difference killed me. I only had 3 hits out of 10 rounds. Not a good hit percentage.

I’ve listened to Frank talk about how after 600 you have to be on your game for wind. I believe it. The wind was almost non existent with my first shot. I held left edge of the plate and got an impact on my first shot. It seemed too easy, and I was surprised. Then the wind starting blowing left to right 5-7mph and then on and off.

I was watching mirage and vegetation at the target. Mirage was boiling and vegetation was barely moving. I kept missing a target width left.

My target was a mini ipsc 7”x12”. I’m shooting factory 88gr out of a 24” gas gun.

Also, how do you guys compensate for mirage? I had to start aiming at the bottom of the target because once the mirage kicked up big time, I was hitting high when aimed center mass. Holding bottom my impacts were center.

Any input?

Depending on wind speed, there are times you need to be on your game inside 600 yards too, especially for target size. 5-7 mph winds are not that great, but when they are not constant, and you are not used to dealing with it, problems arise. Doubt you are the first to ever say, "didn't see that one coming". We all waste a shot,, and the quicker the followup shot, the better the chance of an impact. You pay attention to what is happening downrange, you will learn as you go.
Let's discuss hit pct and your target size at 765. Your target width wise is now sub moa, and even though the bullet is heavy for caliber, just how accurate is the factory ammo? And what is the velocity of it? If it is a 3/4" rifle or load at 100 yards, expecting even 1 moa at 700 is pushing the accuracy of what you have, even on a calm day. If it is a .25 moa gun, things change for the better.
On mirage compensation, didn't you really solve the riddle yourself for that outing? No one wakes up one morning after having a vision and goes out and is able to conquer any mirage they may encounter. Mirage can be tricky, there are times when mirage is in sync with the wind immediately, but other times when mirage can stop, boil straight up, switch direction, but there are still trailing winds from the original direction that are going hose you if you now favor center or lean on the other side of the plate.
