ok so i just had a custom gun built and i had a bunch of loads made up and left them long(2.80), so i get the gun and try to chamber them and they are too long and i cant get the bolt to close. So now i seat them down farther .003 at a time til i come to 2.65 and the bolt closes. I know this is within book spec but it looks like the bullet could just fall into the case, could this be ok or is there something else i could do? It's a 243win with a match chamber.... ill give any more info as needed, thanks

so what i really need to know is, will the bullet being so far into my case hurt me??? or does it matter?

Re: 243 win another question

What bullet are you loading & to what specs did the smith throat your rig?
I run a 115DTAC @ 2.860" from a mag fed SA .243Win Match chamber, but GAP throated it specifically to run those long boolits. As it goes, you don't really want to seat a bullet below the ogive...

Re: 243 win another question

Just guessing by the info you've given, but it sounds like your match chamber's throat is cut with less leade to engage lighter (shorter) bullets than those beefy 105s...

I think knockemdown is is on to something. I would contact the builder and ask what reamer he used. I think the throat can be reamed more without hurting anything.
You have another thread about this gun and compressed loads.
The max "COAL" thing kinda went out the door with the Berger VLD.

Re: 243 win another question

This is reason enough why it's always a good idea to supply your smith a 'dummy round' as a hands on guideline. And especially so if you need are wanting to keep within to +/- of a c.o.a.l. to ensure land engagement within the magazine constraints of your particular rifle...

You might could have 'smith use a throating reamer to give you more leade, but that takes time & more $$$, and also assuming he has that specific reamer on hand. Or, you could just settle on shooting a lighter pill, but that may not sit well with your hopes & expectations.

Best of luck, whatever you decide...
