ok so i'm wanting to add a 260 to the collection. i want it for a hunting rifle first, target rifle second, so weight is important. but i would like to gradually trick it out to a custom rifle over time. what would be my best bet as far as a rifle i could buy right now and use some, but customize as i go?

Remington does not offer a 260 anymore in the 700 unless you get one used but savage has the lrp and a stainless model. Tikka also makes them but i dont think there available from what other people have said. If you want to wait call remington custom shop,surgeon,or ga precision.

LRP is heavy. 1" OD barrel 26 inches long. Not exactly a light packing gun. Probably close to 14lbs with ammo bipod scope.

Yeah a 260 slow build may be tough....much easier to find a 308 like a Rem 700 SPS Varmint or similar and get good optics, then upgrade stock, then maybe trigger, then have it blue printed and the barrel changed to get your 260.
Or go savage with a .260 or 6.5 Creedmoor but i understand they are hard to come buy b/c they are a new release. Doing this you would start with the caliber you want and an arguably better out of the box setup to start then the SPS (from what i hear).

For a light weight, accurate .260 I would look at the Savage 10 Predator Hunter Max 1. Medium profile barrel that is fluted, accustock, accutrigger, right or left handed.

What is you budget? I am only asking because it may determine your route you want to go and maybe in the long run save you money. I would have a Rem 700 barreled action done in 260 with a sporter weight barrel and drop it into a take off HS stock and call it a day until later on when you could spend more money on a stock. You could probably be into it for $1500 and have one hell of an accurate gun.

The savage "hunter" actions are not as heavy/stiff as the target actions so not sure how much this will affect the durability and precision of your future build. All the Rem 700 actions are the same except for the SS models and that is just a different metal but same construction.

I own a Savage model 12 LRP in 260 and love it. However ...if I had to carry it for any kind of distance I would hate it. It's one nice shooting boat anchor.
Im thinking I need to develop a small pair of wheels to attch to my bipod like podclaws. Maybe a hitch on the butt stock.
My friend has a Savage model 111 in 6.5 Creedmore and it is a nice shooter. It is 5.5 pounds and has a small barrel profile so it heats up fast and felt recoil is a little higher than a target gun. But if I was going to go scrambling around the mountains goat hunting it would be pretty nice.

1500 would probably be my max. Can you order barreled actions, or would I have to find a donor rifle?

I bought a Douglas 260 XX blued 98 Mauser unfired Factory 22" .625" #3 taper for $115 off another gun forum classified.
Someone on line sent me a VZ24 action with welded and engraved bolt handle. I usually have to pay $100 for a VZ24 and $50 to get the bolt welded. I drilled and tapped this one for 6-48 screws.
I had a VZ24 take off stock lying around that I sawed off the end. Then I glass bedded it.
I have Weaver #45 and #46 scope mounts lying around.

Personally I like the Savage. Go to the pawn shop and buy a Savage for around $350. Pull the barrel off and put on one of the Savage pre-fit barrels from CBI, Pac-Nor, Mcgowen, Rock Creek for $300-$350. If weight is the issue I would suggest light varmint contour, heavy but not too heavy. There are several stock options that are under $250. With go, no-go gauges and such your under a grand for a half-minute rifle. Later you do the trigger, CDI bottom metal, etc. Nice thing about a Savage is you don't "need" a smith to do the work so that money can go into the rifle.

I drag my 18lb rifle all over obstacles and shit for two to five days at a time every time I shoot a match and it has made me a better and stronger man! Hell, my 25-06 hunting rifle is at least 15 lbs, and it's for hunting Antelope and Deer. Sure it's a bunch of weight for a hunting rifle, but it's not going to kill me. Besides, I'm not carrying 150 rounds of ammo when I hunt. Just water, a knife, my rifle, maps, compass, 20 rounds of ammo, and other small kit.
