260 or 7mm-08

Re: 260 or 7mm-08

Thanks again for all the feedback. As I stated earlier most of what I am seeing here has reaffirmed my thinking. I have decided to go with the 7mm-08. I know that they are basically splitting hairs ballistically but I needed to decide <span style="font-weight: bold">what was best FOR ME</span>.

I choose the 7mm-08 for the following:

*This wasn't going to be a comp gun so recoil didn't matter.

*Since this wasn't going to be a comp gun Lapua brass didn't matter. I can buy Winchester of the shelf for the 7mm-08. For the 260 it requires an extra step to form.

*I am going to use this for some hunting and that includes hog. I know both will kill but the 7mm bullet has the edge in the energy dept. by roughly 200lbs. plus better hunting bullet selection.

*Of the 2 the 7mm has a better barrel life expectancy.

*Out to 1000yrds. the 260 has a fraction better drop and the 7mm-08 has a fraction better drift. The wind blows where I shoot and it is a lot easier to deal with the drop than the drift.

*While they are both about <span style="font-weight: bold">equal out to 1000yrds.</span> at 1100+ the 7mm has the edge in both drop and drift.

These are the reasons that the 7mm-08 works best for me. I know if this was going to be a dedicated comp gun for only out to 1000yrds. the .260 would more than likely won out. Every body has a different purpose for their gun and for me it was long range shooting and some hunting. I honestly don't think I could have gone wrong with either but the 7mm-08 fit my needs better.

that is all good, but not at all the question/ issue posed by the OP

If the items I have mentioned favoring the 7 over 6.5 are not valid, I am interested in any "pertinent" information </div></div>

The only advantage the 7 has over the 6.5 is energy and energy doesn't matter much. My statement above was in your regard that pigs are some hard to kill animals when they are not. Between the two rounds questioned there is not enough difference to even judge one over the other. You are the one that touted the 7mm-08 is vastly more capable when the case in point is they are dang near identical. </div></div>

7 projectiles go heavier and those suitable for large game are more abundant/available than for 6.5

260 and 7-08 is splitting hairs, but that is what the OP is looking for - help with the hair splitting </div></div>

maybe some work on your reading comprehension is in order if you interpret:

"260 and 7-08 is splitting hairs" as "vastly more capable"

either way, I am done with you as I do not care to have a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent </div></div>

You're right I did miss type when I said "7mm-08 is vastly more capable", when I was simply referring to why is weight of the projectile has anything to do with killing a pig. You imply that a big heavy projectile as in 45-70 is needed or more commonly used when that is far from true.

Except that the 7mm-08 isn't a long action.

I use a 7mm-08 when hunting. For pronghorn and deer I use 120g Barnes TTSX. Puts 'em right down. For elk (which is just an academic exercise as of now), I'll load in 140g TTSX.

There's virtually no kick, and the external ballistics are great. There are also a lot of good 7mm bullets available for both hunting and precision work.

Pic of this year's pronghorn and my 7mm-08 (Rem 700 LSS Mountain Rifle with B&C Alaskan stock).

The 7mm-08 isn't a long action but, for my build as I stated earlier in this thread it is. That is what TeamSendIt is refering to.

Nice pronghorn.

Re: 260 or 7mm-08

My choice would be the 7mm-08. Heavier bullet more versatile, deals with wind better while your shooting 1000 yard targets. Plus its a fun round to shoot.
