Hello everyone it's my first time to post on the hide if this isn't the correct place to start this thread just let me know.. I've been trying to decide which caliber I'm torn between the 260 and 6.5cm I do reload so ammo avalibility is really not a issue... I know it's been brought up before but I really can't find any difference just wanting a little input.. I shoot 1000+ fairly often just wanting something different.. All bullshit aside is there any reason to go with the creedmoor over the 260

I shoot both, and on my rifles they run neck and neck out to 700 yards. After that the .260 has a slight edge on drop. Both do very well to the 1000 yard range I'm limited to. If you hand load, then I suggest the .260.

There is really no discernible difference between the two for most shooters. My friend shoots a 260; I shoot 6.5CM and we can't really tell the difference between the two. I think you can flip a coin. I picked 6.5CM because it was built from the ground up as an efficient short action cartridge and is more mag length friendly.
What the dead squirl said above. I have both now and love both. I reload both, but it's very nice to just grab a couple boxes of factory ammo for the creed and go--even more so if the wife is shooting with me, I give her the creed and factory ammo and she is GTG. Can't trust her with hand loads--she shoots too damn good.
Wish is could get decent brass for the creedmoor at a reasonable price. Been very happy with the Nosler--but stupid expensive. There is simply no reason for it to be so much more than Lapaua 260 brass. That said, hopefully Norma will come to the rescue soon enough.

My decision for 260 came down to one consideration as I reload, brass availability. If it were not for the brass availability, I would likely sway the way of 6.5CM due to the ability to have quality factory ready loadings if necessary.
Are you set on a short action? If not look at the 6.5x55. It will outrun 260/6.5c's if you put it in a long action. And it's among the cheapest Lapua brass at $70/100 vs $90/100 for 260.

Flip and coin and never look back. I have both and prefer the 6.5CM but that is based on purely subjective criteria. 142SMK at 1000 yards is an 8.5 mil dial up with the CM.
Both are excellent cartridges. You can't go wrong with either one.

IMHO, if you don't reload for either, I'd see what it's gonna cost you to get setup to reload each. I had excellent luck with the factory hornady dies in my 6.5CM. I have a Redding dies for my .260 and they're great too.

I faced the same question as you a 2-3 years back. I went with the 260 because of all the sources for brass I could use if 260 was not readily available and... lapua had just also started making it at the time.
I've always wondered why the CM was other developed. The only advantage I see is the slightly shorter case length to allow bullets to seat out further.
That being said, I love my .260 and would not give it up in favor of the CM.

Dont guess I understand this. The base case for the 260 (308) was designed from the ground up as an efficient short action cartridge. In fact, that is one of its primary claims to fame, along with outstanding accuracy.
The 308 case has been around for decades, a testament that it works well. The 260 (and 7mm-08) are derivates of this case with a slimmed down and turned neck. Sure, 260 and 308 both fit in a short action, however, shooters can encounter mag length problems using these cases as they chase the lands, especially using long and heavy bullets. The market for type 2 alpha mags, using 300 WSM mags with tweaked feed lips, or removing the forward plate from AI mags, and notching the feed ramp in a rem 700 receiver is often needed to get the desired OAL and case capacity.
The 6.5 creedmoor case is a different design, and compared to how long the 308 case design has been around, it's brand new. Hornady designed it to efficiently run long, heavy bullets within mag length, delivering a handy and effective short action cartridge that nearly obviates the use of some long action chamberings. Shooters using this case don't normally deal with the issue of running out of magazine space as they chase the lands. Although it's a shorter case, 6.5 CM velocities are often comparable to the longer 260 (308) case; the 260 will normally have a slight edge in this area, but many shooters have found the difference negligible, especially considering that the round will need to be pushed really hard to get there. This is what I meant by the 6.5CM case being "more efficient." Sure, you can ding me for not quantifying it's efficiency, but if you have a shorter case where the majority of shooters are able to use fewer grains of powder pushing the same bullet nearly the same velocity as a longer case, that means "more efficient" to me in a qualitative sense.
All of this brouhaha said, I still think that 260 is a great chambering, especially if you have a bunch of extra 308 brass.

.260 Remington is absolutely the best. Not just between it and the 6.5 CM but the best cartridge ever made in the entire history of the world. Why? Because that's what I have.

Practically the same. 260 edge on brass. 6.5 edge on factory match loads. They both will shock you shooting long range if you are shooting a 308. I know from experience! I shortened my 308 and made a woods gun out of it!

Naw... I'll continue to burn my creed tube. I'm more of a Creedmoor fan...but I wouldn't mind having a 260 too.
I was alluding to the fact that in all the threads that have been created on this topic, it all boils down to the 260 having Lapua brass available. Which is cool, but wouldn't be the deciding factor for me.
Both calibers perform equally well. The velocity edge goes to the 260 for just a little bit more case capacity (not by much though)...but, the Creed has some intelligent design traits that work well too (designed around using in mags, efficient case design and shoulder angle despite the smaller case capacity, match ammo that is affordable that shoots good and IMO ammo can be found more easily).
The Hornady MG dies seem to work well for me too...low runout and low single digit SDs. So whether you reload or not, it shoots good...just as good as the 260 (with or without brass that has been sent down from the almighty himself).

I hear ya. Really, both loaded to 2.800", the case capacity is the same. It's only when you load the 260 long when its capacity is greater and can edge out the creedmoor in velocity.
6 of one, half dozen of the other.
My buddy was sold on a Savage 12LRP, but torn on 260 vs 6.5CM. I told him to get the CM for no other reason than it looks sexier.
I have both, well, my creedmoor is actually sold and my 260 will hopefully be sold soon. The reason I'm selling is that I'm about to sink $3000 into an Eliseo tube gun with a Pierce action, and I can only pick one, 6.5 or 260. I still can't decide because it honestly doesn't really make any difference.
Edit: I'll probably be going with a 6.5x47 and ditching both the 260 and 6.5 creedmoor.

26" gets me to 2855fps with my Creedmoor with no pressure signs. That being said, my next build will be at 23"...I prefer giving up a little velocity for a bit more portability/manuverability.

Knowing that I was getting to the end of this barrel's life I tried and experiment and chopped it down to 22.5" from 26". I only lost 50fps. I'm getting 2850fps pushing 140 Berger Hybrids. I may have gotten lucky with a fast barrel from Bartlein but I think when I re-barrel it I will stay in the 22"-24" area.
How many other threads are on this same topic? And they all say the same thing over and over. Read Zak's article on the 6.5 comparison between the CM, Lapua and 260. Compare the cases for each, pick the one you think you'll like best(because you will end up loving it) and run with it.
I went 260 and love it. The Barrel on mine is 22.5 and my velocities for a 140 Hornady match is 2870( at first suspected by comparing to a drop calculator and finally confirmed by chronograph). Accuracy is way better than I am capable of.
That being said, my shooting partners CM with the same bullet can't meet my velocities out of a 26" barrel because he doesn't have the case capacity. Accuracy on his is the same as mine, both rifles are consistently.25 to .4 MOA.
Velocity is not the end all be all by any means but for me still somewhat of a factor(kind of like any car goes from point A to point B but faster feels better). Accuracy for both, equal, components about the same. Factory ammo is the one thing that while yes is convenient, I feel it would encourage me to be lazy. Example, every time I think about loading for my 308, I get distracted and load for my 260 because I always swing by the store, pick up a box or two of 308 and then think, well what's the point of loading for it now.
Maybe I'm just f*cked in the head though.

No because he might have a slow barrel or you have a faster one with that short barrel. I get 2930fps from a 140 AMAX from my 26.5" Creedmoor. So does my team mate. I know many people getting around 2870fps with the Creedmoor. Not too hard to get with H4350.
And conversely, some of my shooting buddys only get ~2750 from their 26" 6.5 Creedmoor rifles before they start to see brass flow.
Exactly and I am sure there are people with .260s who can't get his velocities as well. Proves my point that getting one piece of data and saying a blanket statement that the Creedmoor can't make those velocities "because he doesn't have the case capacity." isn't true. There are more variables and the very small amount of case difference isn't going to make much difference in the end.
Are you reloading your brass? If so how many firings are you getting with that load?
The 6.5CM and 260 are neck and neck (no pun intended), but the 6.5CM will do it in a shorter OAL. I choose 6.5CM in the gassers due to the OAL, but performance between the two is negligible. If you have a bolt gun with the mag length, this will give the 260 a slight edge in case capacity.

6.5CM. I've seen more than a few people shoot a stage then crawl around on hands and knees desperately searching for that 260 Lapua brass while the clock is ticking. It is not the image you want left of yourself. A competitor with an Instagram account, a handy smart phone, and a sense of humor might make you instantly famous in this less than flattering pose. Preserve your dignity and get a Creedmoor. Of equal importance, "Creedmoor" sounds infinitely more cool than "Remington". To the unwashed, if said with a certain gravity an aloofness, it can be both mysterious and intimidating. And chicks dig it.

Not when loaded to mag length. I had a .260 built for my son and now wish I had done a 6.5 so I could seat the bullets longer. The 260 is great, and would be the winner in a non repeater rifle where you can seat them out to take advantage of the case capacity.
If I had my time back I would have gone with 260 over the CM. Currently shooting an AI/AE with a AINA 26" Bartlein bbl. Ballistics are a toss up so that's not an issue. I reload but went with the CM due to the availability of accurate match ammo. Unfortunately I managed to get one of the lots of 140 AMAX with the mystery powder and charge weights varying from 43.1 to 43.8 grs in on 20 rd box. Needless to say I was getting flattened primers and accuracy, well you can figure that one out with the various charge weights. It was a frustrating waste of time. I ended up pulling all of the remainder for the brass and loaded them up with 41.5 of H4350 and was getting sub 1/2 moa groups.I know things are going to better apparently but life is too short waiting for better factory ammo. I live in Canada as well and not see that stuff for two yrs if it ever gets any better. Hence why I will be going with a 260 the next time as I will be reloading right from the start.
As far as brass goes, a lot more selection for the 260 as well and I am not just referring to Lapua brass. Right now in Canada, 50 pcs of Hornady brass will run you $49.00 if you can find it so you can imagine what Nosler brass costs, if you can find it. Everything is about a yr behind at least up here to begin with and maybe if other companies make CM brass, well whenever that is if ever, add another yr for me to be able to see it.
