Took this deer at 269 yards, right under the eye w/ 175g SMK. Made quite the exit hole and was of course DRT.

Watched a video on how to do this, looked easy enough, and it sure was!

Re: 269 yard head shot,

Nice shot!

I hit a doe in literally the exact same spot this past Saturday with a .224 80gr Amax @ 2890fps from my 223AI...at an admitted "chip shot" range of 70yd.

Terminal effects were a little more spectacular than yours, but the result the exact same

Yeah, people told me sometimes the head just explodes.

Yeah, they don't work on Coyotes either.

Re: 269 yard head shot,

Yup, thats how I skin my deer also. A nice rock works just as well as a golf ball and sometimes its easier to get the rope off. Also if you cant hoist it up a tree, just lay a tarp on the ground and tie its head to the base of the tree or to another vehicle and do the same thing. The tarp helps just to keep dirt out of the meat. By far the easiest way to skin one.

Anybody notice a difference in taste? </div></div>

The doe I headshot was the least gamey vension I have ever eaten...the tenderloins actually tasted like a high quality beef filet from a restaurant.

Hardly enough experience to be definitive, but I'm sold...

Re: 269 yard head shot,

The headshots I have taken do seem to result in a tastier animal lol. Less adrenalin and fatigue in the muscles I'd say. I am no doctor, but it makes damn good sense. All that sudden fear and alarm do crazy stuff to the body.

Last year I took one deer with a lung shot. Ran maybe 40 yards or so before dropping. The other was taken with a shot through the back of the neck, right at the base of the skull. Both does, both were older animals, BUT the head shot one did taste noticeably different than the lung shot animal.

Re: 269 yard head shot,

Great shot!

I now head-shoot after shooting one about 25 years ago, noticed the same thing regarding the venison, and came to the same conclusion.

The guys I hunt with shake their heads, mumble "lucky shot", and ask "why"? My answer, "Because I can".

Head hole = DDRT (drop dead RT).

Re: 269 yard head shot,

if I am going after does for meat, I neck or head shoot.
Dead in their tracks.
I absolutely believe that deer that get ran hard or are stressed out are more "gamey" due to the adrenalin.

Same with pigs and bucks in the rut..
If I am meat hunting I don't shoot running animals, only calm and oblivious.

Get it field dressed fast and the meat cooled down fast.
Age it about a week and a half and have the best meat ever.
